INFO GMM EC Advanced controls system for ECOSS The New Choice In Evaporative Cooling

Intelligence for Heat Exchangers with EC Fans For many years, Güntner Controls has been providing performant, high quality controllers and control panels that contribute to the high standards of Güntner heat exchanger systems. These controllers and control panels are precisely adapted to the Güntner units and are a very important part of the Güntner heat exchanger systems. The Güntner Motor Management (GMM) was developed especially for heat exchangers with EC fans. The result is optimum efficiency on heat dissipation which therefore enhances the economic efficiency of the installation. The combination of energy-efficient EC fans with the GMM is the only way to experience the full benefits the system has to offer. The GMM controls processes, regulates the speed of the fans according to pressure or temperature and also provides more safety and transparency for an improved plant operation. 2 3

The Güntner Motor Management (GMM) System Functions The GMM system is tailored to achieve the best possible level of effectiveness for heat dissipation: it therefore increases the cost-effectiveness of the refrigeration system. The sophisticated technology used for the control and power components maximizes the service life of the heat exchanger and fans. The GMM automatically sets the parameters for the fans and power components, thereby enabling plug-and-play operation. The most up-to-date BUS technology used in all GMM systems equips the GMM to perform the three main functions of Process Controller, Information Manager and System Manager. GMM System Process Controller Process Control for Energy-Optimised Operation The GMM controls the fans speed according to pressure or temperature and controls processes therefore creating an energy-optimized heat exchanger system. The refrigerant can be selected in the display for pressure control. Condensing pressure and temperature are also shown in the display. Other settings, such a sthe type of refrigerant or set points, can be selected directly on the display. Information Manager Increased Reliability and Transparency of System Operation GMM s Information Manager function offers communication interfaces. It shows all key operation-related information on the display and makes it available to superior systems via a BUS system or standard interface. This makes remote maintenance easy and makes it possible to call up information about operating signals at any time. Güntner Motor Management Operating Modes GMM systems are very flexible in terms of application; 3 different operating modes are available. In the event of an operating fault, the system switches automatically to emergency mode. In this case, the system operation is Slave Mode Slave Signal from a Superior Controller: 1. Slave external: The default mode when no internal control system is selected. the control value that is pre-defined via analogue or BUS input is converted to a rotating field or an adjusted control signal and is communicated directly to the fans. Auto Mode Automatic Control of GMM with PID*: 1. Auto internal: Automatic control to internally set setpoint. guaranteed by the integrated bypass function where the fans run at a predefined speed and the controller displays a fault message. analogue/ BUS 0-10V 4-20mA direct transmission setpoint BUS (EC, GMM EC) EC fan EC fan System Manager BUS (EC, GMM EC) Monitoring Facility for the Unit s Entire Life Cycle If a power component or an EC fan has to be replaced during servicing, all parameters are automatically programmed. This plugand-play system automatically executes all programming according to the respective design point of the heat exchanger and displays detailed information in real time. 2. Auto external analogue: Automatic control to the setpoint that is pre-set externally via analogue or BUS input. * PID: Proportional-Integral-Differential setpoint analogue/ BUS 0-10V 4-20mA BUS (EC, GMM EC) EC fan 4 5

Unique Functions for Refrigeration Technology The GMM offers a range of special functions for refrigeration technology. Maximum Operational Reliability Malfunctions are both time consuming and costly. This is why operational reliability and reducing downtimes were the main focuses in the development of the GMM. The GMM offers you unique functions to ensure maximum operational reliability of your system. The alarm management function ensures consistent analysis of all messages relating to the entire heat exchanger system. These include messages from the EC fans, power and switch cabinet components or peripheral devices. When alarms such as sensor malfunctions are triggered, the system automatically switches over to bypass mode (provided that this function has been activated). With automatic parameterization, a great deal of time can be saved during commissioning or if fans need to be replaced. The parameters for the motors are set automatically: no additional software or computer is required. The bypass function ensures that the fans or power components automatically switch into emergency operating mode when there is a malfunction. This emergency operating mode permits heat exchanger operation to be maintained for as long as possible. Naturally, all bypass functions can be activated or deactivated via the GMM s clear text display. By means of the manual operation function, the fans can be operated manually. This emergency operating mode can be useful in various situations; for example, during operational disruptions, sensor malfunctions, slave signals malfunctions or during the commissioning phase. Güntner products in action: The GWS switch cabinets ensure energy-optimised control and low-noise operation of the 64 drycoolers (GFW series). New functions of the Güntner GMM Controller series equipment are checked prior to serial production in the test and inspection station. Integration GMM EC can easily be integrated into the customer s sytem. There are three different operating modes: Two automatic control modes and one slave mode. Maintenance cycle During prolonged downtimes, the fans are operated at short pre-set intervals (maintenance cycle) to maintain operability and prevent malfunctions. Setpoint shifting The setpoint can be shifted in relation to the external temperature in order to ensure optimal energy efficiency. External predefined setpoint An external setpoint can be predefined from the superordinate control system via analogue inputs or the BUS system. Bypass function / Manual mode Serves to switch the fans from automatic to emergency operating mode when malfunctions occur in order to ensure continued heat dissipation. Alarm Management All messages are stored consistently in the alarm buffer and can be read out at any time via the clear text display with date and time. 6 7

Maximum Operating Convenience Ease of operation is an important factor. We have developed a range of useful functions which you will find to be very helpful as well as easy to operate. Communication Functionality Various BUS systems are used to facilitate communication with the superordinate control system, or for integration into the building s control technology systems. Using these BUS connections, all internal information such as energy consumption, set parameters, measured as-is values, etc. can be read. Furthermore, depending on the operating mode, additional functions like automatic switching to bypass control in slave mode are available. If a connection without BUS should be necessary, it is, of course, possible to obtain operating information like digital/analogue inputs and outputs via hardware signals. Setpoint shifting If the external temperature exceeds the set condensing setpoint, this value cannot be reached. Consequence: The energy consumption of fans increases, since they operate at maximum speed. Particularly in partial load situations, the ratio between the compressor s energy consumption and the heat exchanger s energy consumption must be evaluated as there is savings potential here. A slight setpoint increase results in a slight increase in the compressor s capacity while simultaneously reducing the fans energy consumption significantly. International Operating Convenience Each GMM has five operating language options which can be activated via the clear text display at any time. You can choose German, English, French, Spanish or Portuguese. Moreover, the units system can also be adapted to suit local requirements (SI or IP values). Setpoint switchover In all GMM systems, two setpoints can be defined: an external signal is used to switch from one to the other. This makes it possible to automatically activate different setpoints; for example, for summer or winter operation. Reducing sound emissions night limit The standard GMM enables the speed to be reduced at night by activating the function in the controller s menu. During operation, switchover occurs automatically via the programmed internal time or the external signal. Threshold value function Depending on physical input values or control values, functions can be activated via a relay. Possible values include: pressure, return temperature, external temperature or the control value of the current fan speed. Refrigerant input To make the temperature values of the condensers available to the technician, they are automatically calculated using the measured pressure. This is done via the set refrigerant, which can be selected using the clear text display. 8 9

GMM EC Combining the GMM EC with highly efficient EC fans offers the ideal solution with respect to energy efficiency and noise emissions. In addition to the GMM strengths mentioned above, the GMM EC is equipped with further unique functions. With the Low Capacity Motor Management (LCMM) the system can also be operated efficiently during low partial load conditions. EC fans have a minimal speed of 8-12% of the full load. The purpose of the LCMM is to facilitate control wthin the lower capacity range (e.g. 5 %) of the heat exchanger. To this end, the GMM has a function whereby the control signal is recalculated as appropriate for the number of fans and their minimum speeds, and subsequently sent to the individual fans. To avoid frequent switching on and off, a hysteresis function can be activated. Based on a comparison of the fans operating hours (fan cycling), the GMM decides which fan is to be switched on. Due to the automatic parameterization or the addressing of the fans, neither special software nor particular expertise is required to start-up the system. The fans are automatically set to the values entered in the system, regardless of whether this was at initial start-up or when a fan needed replacing. The fans usage limits are thus clearly defined and, as a result, adher to the required heat exchanger capacity and the maximum permissible sound levels is ensured. The thermal resistance of the power electronics in the motors is also guaranteed. A further contribution toward increased operational reliability is the tear-off function. If a fan is blocked by ice, freedom of movement is carefully restored by repeatedly running the fan clockwise and conterclockwise with increasing torque. This function can be set via the GMM; if it is in operation, a message is displayed. Allocation of Input and Output Functions Controller 1. Digital input 24 V DC Enable control 2.
