Middle is actual address (sony, etrade, amazon, etc.) Domain -- ends in dot something (.com,.org,.gov,.net)- definitions Never any spaces in URL All lower case Browser Type of software Allows user to access the web Two basic types -- 95% of all users have the following Internet Explorer (Microsoft) Mozilla Firefox Aol has its own type of browser Address Bar - Shows URL of current website 2

Forward & Back Buttons - Takes user to pages already visited Progress Bar - Shows how much of a page has loaded Home Button - Takes user back to preset home page Stop Button - Stops the loading of current page Refresh Button - Reloads current page Links Links allow you to move from page to page Cursor will change from arrow to hand www.yahoo.comwhen it passes over link Many links will change colors when clicked Many links will also stay a different color after you used it so you know where you ve been 3

Search Engines Allows you to find the URL of a web site Type in a topic and search engines will find pages about that topic Types of Search Engines Directories -- Pages are sorted into categories and subcategories Indexers -- Pages are found strictly in a word search format Search Directories Search Indexers Uses humans to Examples form database Yahoo -- most Results will be popular more relevant Snap -- Won t get as many Magellan -- results Look Smart -- Smaller than Indexers Databases are created by Will get many matches Results will be less relevant Larger than directories Examples Excite -- AltaVista -- Hotbot -- Lycos -- Search Engines Google is the most reliable search engine Drawback to doing a keyword search is that you may get too many results to go through or pages that have nothing to do with your topic Boolean Search Logic Boolean logic allows you to narrow down your search so that you will not get so many hits (results) 4

Boolean Logic -- AND Example -- Apples and Oranges Boolean Logic -- Or Example -- Apples or Oranges Apples Oranges Apples Oranges Search Results Search Results Boolean Logic -- And Not Example -- Apples and not Oranges Apples Search Results Oranges Reliability of Information Not all information on Internet is valid Things to check Name of website -- if site is a reputable name it should be valid ex. www.brittanica.com If unsure, find info on another website, it s always best to double check Author of text -- they should have credentials Safety Online Don t give anyone your address or phone number while online If making a purchase online, make sure that the site has a secure connection In chat rooms or forums don t give out personal information ex.
