SB-2042 PRELIMINARY SINGLE SUBJECT TEACHING CREDENTIAL Preliminary Credential 5 Year Preliminary Credential *Not Renewable What grade levels can you teach? Eligible to teach grades Preschool, K-12, and adults in a departmentalized classroom English Learner Authorization Your credential will include an English Learner Authorization
CLEAR CREDENTIAL To earn a Clear Credential, completion of an induction program is required Induction programs are offered by: Districts County Offices of Education Universities only an option if your employer does not offer induction When completed, you apply for the Clear Credential through the induction program sponsor Clear Credentials are renewed online every five years It is your responsibility to renew your credential before the expiration date
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY PRELIMINARY CREDENTIAL EXPIRES? You do not need to complete a new Preliminary Credential Program Preliminary or Lapsed (expired) Credentials can be reactivated by requesting an extension but MAY be subject to new regulations Extensions for SB-2042 Preliminary Credentials are available Information on extensions is available on the Credential Center website The appeal process for an extension is handled directly with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS??? Moving out of California? Your California Credential can expire (lapse), it will never go away, but may be subject to new regulations. If your Preliminary Credential expires (lapses), apply for an extension if/when you return to California Teaching in another state? ADDING AUTHORIZATIONS Additional Single Subject Area Complete subject matter competency (CSET or coursework) in area of interest, and Complete additional subject specific methods course (EDSS 450) Multiple Subject Credential - Authorization to teach in a self-contained classroom preschool, K-12, and adults Complete subject matter competency by passing CSET Multiple Subject exam, Pass RICA exam, and Complete two methods courses One course directly related to teaching in a self-contained classroom Pick one: EDEL 442, EDEL 462, EDEL 472, or SCED 475 One course in developing English language skills for beginning readers (EDEL 452)
SUPPLEMENTARY AUTHORIZATIONS Authorizes departmentalized teaching in grades 9 and below Earned strictly through coursework Request a free evaluation of coursework before receiving your preliminary credential After issuance of your Preliminary Credential, an additional fee will apply
CREDENTIAL EVALUATIONS Student Teaching & Seminar courses are noted as in progress (IP) until grades have posted Missing items are noted as Needs and must be submitted prior to credential recommendation CalTPAs Clearance provided by Single Subject Program Office
CREDENTIAL APPLICATION PROCESS STEP 1: Upon notification of passing all CalTPAs, submit a Request for Recommendation Form to our office Important Complete all surveys/evaluations the Single Subject Program sends to you otherwise there will be a delay in your credential recommendation. Important Email on CTC site should match Credential Center records, do not use CSULB email address STEP 2: A Credential Analyst will submit an online recommendation to the CTC STEP 3: The CTC will send an email directing you to Complete Your Program s Recommendation, a Program Completer Survey, and pay for your credential (No need to complete survey again)
CREDENTIAL DOCUMENT Credential documents are typically issued by the CTC w/in 10 business days from receipt of payment Please review and print your credential document If you have additional authorizations, please make sure they are correct CSULB does not send verification of your credential
JULY 6, 2018 Deadline to submit your Request for Recommendation form After that date, your Credential Center file will be made inactive It will be your responsibility to contact our office when you have completed all credential requirements You may be subject to a new Credential Evaluation and Service fee
CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION TEACHING CREDENTIAL (CTE) Teach in career technical, trade or vocational areas Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential Requirements: One year of teaching experience Two years of industry sector experience Clear Career Technical Education Teaching Credential Requirements: Hold a Preliminary CTE Teaching Credential Take CTED 403A-Foundations of Career Technical Education (online course)
