Registering Your D1 with the System (Windows 2000) Before You Begin Confirm that your OHCI-compliant IEEE 1394 board or card has been correctly recognized by the system. If the board or card has been correctly recognized by the system, the controller used will appear under IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers. If IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers is not displayed, or if the controller is listed under Other devices or Unknown devices or appears with a red or yellow indicator next to it, the board or card has not been correctly recognized by the system. Step 1 Install Nikon View or Nikon Capture and restart your computer. Step 2 Once Windows has restarted, turn the D1 on, check that the mode dial is set to PC, and connect the camera and PC via the IEEE 1394 cable. Step 3 The Found New Hardware Wizard dialog will be displayed. Click Next >. Note: If this dialog is not displayed in Step 3, proceed to Step 8. 1
Step 4 The following dialog will be displayed. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended) and click Next >. Select this option Step 5 The following dialog will be displayed. Select the appropriate option. If you are using the CD-ROM provided with Nikon Capture 1.1.1 or later or Nikon View DX 1.1 or later insert either CD-ROM into the drive, check the CD-ROM drives option, and click Next >. * If the Welcome dialog appears when the CD-ROM is inserted into the drive, click the Exit button to close the dialog. If you are using a downloaded version with the definition file copied to a floppy disk insert the floppy disk into the drive, check the Floppy disk drives option, and click Next >. If you are using a downloaded version with the definition file saved to your hard disk check the Specify a location option and click Next >. Enter the file path (the location of the downloaded file) in the dialog box displayed and click OK. Check appropriate option 2
Step 6 Click Next > when the following dialog is displayed. Note: If the message Unable to locate driver for this device is displayed in Step 6, the system may have been unable to detect the CD-ROM or you may not have specified the correct location. Click < Back to return to the dialog shown in Step 5 and select CD-ROM drives as the search location. Step 7 The following dialog will be displayed when driver installation is complete. Close the dialog by clicking Finish. 3
Step 8 Once Windows has recognized the D1, check that the camera is correctly registered with the system. Click the Start button and select Control Panel from the Settings sub-menu. Step 9 In the Control Panel window, double-click the System icon. Double-click this icon 4
Step 10 The System Properties dialog will be displayed. Click the Hardware tab. Step 11 Click the Device Manager button in the Device Manager panel. Click this button 5
Step 12 The Device Manager dialog will be displayed. After confirming that Nikon 1394 Device appears in the Device Manager, click the + mark to its left. Click this + Nikon 1394 Device Step 13 Nikon Digital Camera D1 will be displayed. Double-click this item to open the Properties window. Double click 6
Step 14 The Nikon Digital Camera D1 Properties window will be displayed. Confirm that the Device status panel in the General tab shows This device is working properly. indicating that the D1 has been properly registered with the Windows operating system. Check this display 7
Troubleshooting Should you find that the D1 is not correctly registered, check the following points: If Nikon D1 appears under Other devices or Unknown devices complete the steps from Step 15 onward. If IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers does not appear in the Device Manager, or if the IEEE 1394 board or card is listed under Other devices or Unknown devices or appears with a red or yellow mark next to it the IEEE 1394 board or card has not been correctly registered with Windows. Refer to the documentation provided with the board or card and take the actions necessary to register it with the system. If IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers appears in the Device Manager but Nikon D1 does not check the following: Is the camera on? Does the battery have enough charge? If you are using the AC adapter, is it correctly connected? Is the mode dial set to PC? Is the IEEE 1394 cable correctly connected? Step 15 Display the Device Manager as described in steps 8 11. Step 16 Double-click Nikon D1 under Other devices or Unknown devices to display the Properties dialog. Double click 8
