What is a Desktop? When you start your computer, the first thing you see is the desktop. The desktop is your work area. 4

Desktop Start Button: Lets you quickly go to functions such as programs, settings and documents. Task Bar: Displays open windows, and lets you quickly switch from one window to another by clicking on its icon on the taskbar. 8

Desktop Icons: Click on an icon to easily open the application associated with it. Notification Area: The portion of the taskbar that displays icons for system and program features that have no presence on the desktop as well as the time and the volume icon. It contains mainly icons that show status information. 9

Shut Down the Computer The procedure below allows us to close down the MS Windows operating system, so that any unsaved data will be saved to our hard disk. We never just switch of our computer! 1) Click the Start Button 2) Click Shut down 10

Restart the Computer You may need to shut down and restart your computer after installing a new program or if your system becomes unstable. To shut down and immediately restart your computer: 1) Click the Start Button 2) Click Shut down 3) Open the arrow to the right 4) Select Restart 12

Shut Down a Non-Responding Application If we have an application that is not responding to the keyboard or the mouse, then the program cannot be closed down in a normal way so we follow the procedure bellow. 1. Press simultaneously the Ctrl+Alt+Delete buttons on the keyboard. 2. Click Task Manager 3. Click Apllications 4. Select the application to close 5. Click End Task 6. Click End Task again if needed 7. Desktop Screen Saver To change the screen saver that is displayed when you have not used the computer for a set period of time, do the followings: 1. Select Start 2. Select Control Panel 3. Display Settings - Make it Easier to Read What s on your Screen To change the size of the text and other item on your screen you can do the followings: 1. Select Start 2. Select Control Panel 3. Select Appearance and Personalization 4. Choose Display 5. Choose one of the available options to enlarge part of the screen 6. Click Apply 29

Set the Main Keyboard Language To set the default input language that we want to use; when we start our computer, we follow: 1. Start 2. Click Control Panel 3. Click Clock, Language, and Region 4. Click Region and Language 5. Click the tab Keyboard and Languages 6. Click Change Keyboards 7. On the General tab 8. Select the main language you want from the Default Input Language box 9. Add a New Keyboard Language To add a new keyboard language that we want to use; when we start our computer, we follow: 1. Start 2. Click Control Panel 3. Click Clock, Language, and Region 4. Install a Software Application to a Computer To install a program insert the CD (Compact Disk) that the program came on, the autorun will automatically start the installation, and follow program installation instructions. Of course, many software programs can be downloaded today from the Internet. After downloading, we follow the same procedure to install the program. 41

Uninstall a Software Application from a Computer After a software program has been installed properly, an uninstall program file is automatically created, so if we want we can uninstall the program completely from the computer. This is achieved by executing the uninstall file and following the on-screen instructions. This file can be found either in the program s folder or in the Control Panel: 1. Start 2. Click Control Panel 3. Click Programs 4. From the category Program and features 5. Select Uninstall a Program 42

Print Screen You may be required to print screenshots of regions or full screen images from your computer. To do this press the Prt Scr (Print Screen Button) located on your keyboard. Then go to any application where you can paste images (e.g. Paint or Word) and select Paste from the Edit menu. Create a Desktop Shortcut Icon The shortcut icons always have a small arrow in order to recognize them. How to create it? 1. Right click an icon 2. Send to 3. Select Desktop (create shortcut) to send the shortcut icon to the desktop To delete a shortcut icon we select it, and we press the Delete button on the keyboard and confirm the deletion. Deleting a shortcut icon we will not delete the actual icon or proram. 50

Create a New Document Open the MS Word application and immediately a new blank document is created based on the default template. If already inside MS Word, follow the steps bellow: 1. Click File 2. New 3. Select Blank document 65
