BEFORE YOU START: Important! Do you have Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Professional already installed on your computer? Open your applications folder by clicking on the desktop and then choosing Go Applications in the Finder menu bar. Look in the list of programs for Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Professional. If either one is present, then skip Step 1, and go directly to Step 2. Do you have administrative privileges? Click on the Apple logo in the Finder menu bar and select System Preferences. In System Preferences, select Accounts (also called Users on older versions of MacOS X). Confirm that the word Admin appears below your username in the list of users, as below. If you do not have administrative privileges, we advise you to use a PC and not a Mac. 1 of 9
Step 1: Install the Latest Version of Adobe Reader Download the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://get.adobe.com/reader/ Your browser should open a dialog box showing the progress of the download. Once the installer has finished downloading, double-click to start the installation process. A dialog will come up asking you to confirm your intent, click Continue and proceed to install Adobe Reader. 2 of 9
Step 2: Confirm Adobe Reader/Acrobat as your PDF Viewer If your browser is Safari: Download the confirmation PDF from http://www.universityreaders.com/pdf/step_2_confirm.pdf The confirmation PDF should automatically open in Adobe Reader within the browser. Please be patient if this takes a while. A spinning icon in the middle of a blank page indicates that the file is downloading. Once the file is opened, proceed to Step 3. If this confirmation PDF does not appear within the browser window, you may want to download Firefox and use that as your browser instead. 3 of 9
If your browser is Firefox: Download the confirmation PDF from http://www.universityreaders.com/pdf/adobe_confirm.pdf A dialog box will appear asking you how you want to open the file. If this dialog box does not appear, you must set your Firefox preferences elsewhere (see pg 5). Select the Open With option and click on drop-down box. Select Adobe Reader, and click OK to set Adobe Reader as your default option for opening PDF files. Proceed to Step 3. If Adobe Reader is not an option, you will have to set your Firefox preferences elsewhere (see pg 5). 4 of 9
Setting your Firefox Preferences Open Firefox and choose Firefox Preferences from the Firefox menu bar. Click on the Applications icon at the top of the window. In the search box enter PDF. If no results appear, replace PDF with portable document format. One or more search results should be visible. For each result, click on the Action dropdown and select Use Adobe Reader. If this option is not available, click on Use other... and select Adobe Reader from the list of applications. Once this is done, close the Preferences window and go to http://www.universityreaders.com/pdf/adobe_confirm.pdf That file should now open in automatically in Adobe Reader. 5 of 9
Step 3: Install the FileOpen Plugin Download the FileOpen installer from http://plugin.fileopen.com/ Locate the file on your Desktop or in your downloads folder, then double-click the file. This will open a new window with the contents of the installer. Double-click FileOpenInstaller.app and follow the directions to finish installing the FileOpen plugin. Once the plugin is installed, completely shut down your browser (Safari Quit Safari or Firefox Quit Firefox). 6 of 9
Confirm that you have installed the FileOpen plugin by restarting your browser and going to http://plugin.fileopen.com/installcomplete/installcomplete_en.pdf 7 of 9
Step 4: Start Reading your Digital Pack! Go to the University Readers Student Store at http://students.universityreaders.com and log-in to your account This button will take you to your list of purchased digital packs. Click on one of the View buttons to read that particular chapter of your digital pack. After clicking on a View button, a dialog box will prompt you for a name and password -- for the Name field, please enter your Student Store email address (example@email.com). This is an example of an email. Use your own! example@email.com 8 of 9
After properly entering your email address and password you will be able to view your digital materials! 9 of 9
