ios 8.2 Physical Buttons - Sleep / Wake Used to turn the device on /off or wake / sleep. Located on the top, right corner (iphone 6 located on right side). - Ring / Silent Used to turn off the ringer. o TIP: On ipads it can be set to lock the orientation in Settings. - Home Button Used to return to the home screen in ios and unlock the phone. Controls - Lock Click the Sleep / Wake button. - Unlock Click the Sleep / Wake button then drag the slider across the screen and enter a password if needed. o NOTE: iphone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus can be unlocked using the fingerprint reader built into the Home Button. - Turn off Hold the Sleep / Wake button for several seconds then drag the slider. - Turn on Hold the Sleep / Wake button for several seconds. - Reset Hold the Sleep / Wake and Home buttons for 13 seconds until the Apple logo appears. - Take picture of the screen Press the Sleep / Wake and Home button at the same time. Lock Screen - Control Center Allows you to access commonly used apps and features without unlocking the screen. o Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center. o Turn on / off Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and lock orientation. o Adjust Brightness o Pause / play current music or audio. o Adjust Airdrop settings. o Turn on / off flashlight and access timer, calculator and camera. - Camera Swipe up from the bottom, right corner to access the camera. o NOTE: Only photos and videos taken while locked out of the phone can be viewed. - Notification Center Allows you to access an overview of your day as well as any notifications from apps on your phone. o Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Notification Center. o NOTE: The items displayed can be edited in Settings. 1
- Siri You can access Siri from the lock screen by holding down the Home button. Home Screen - Control Center - Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Center. - Notification Center - Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Notification Center. - Search Swipe down from the center of the screen to search your phone. o NOTE: You can edit what Spotlight searches in Settings. - Siri You can access Siri by holding down the Home button. - App Switcher App Switcher allows you to see what apps are currently running and using battery and resources. o Double click the Home button to access the App Switcher. o Swipe left and right to quickly switch between open apps. o To close an app, swipe the app up and off the screen. o TIP: You can see your most commonly accessed contacts at the top. Click on the picture and quickly call, text or FaceTime them. - Apps / Folders o Apps can be rearranged by tapping and holding the icon until all of the icons start to shake. o Tapping and dragging an app on top of another will create a folder that can be named to help organize apps. o Tapping the X in the top, left corner of an app will delete it from your device. o Click the Home button to return to normal use. Settings - Settings allow you to make changes to the way the OS and apps work. - Do Not Disturb When turned on, calls and alerts will be turned off and silenced when the phone is locked. o Scheduled Set a time when your phone goes into DND mode. o Allow Calls From Selected group(s) can still call when in DND mode. o Repeated Calls When turned on, repeated calls from people will come through. - General o Software Update Check to see if there are updates available for the phones OS. NOTE: Updates cannot be installed if you are low on storage space. 2
TIP: Updates can be installed via itunes even if storage space is low. TIP: I always do major updates to the OS via itunes so I can back up the iphone / ipad first. o Siri Siri is the voice activated assistant built into the OS. To access Siri hold the Home button for a few seconds then speak your question or command. Allow Hey Siri If turned on, when the phone is plugged in you can say Hey Siri to access it. Some things you can ask / say are: call, FaceTime, launch, tell something (message), set a meeting for (calendar), set a timer for, Did win?, play (music, podcasts) o Accessibility > Learning Turning this on allows you to triple click the Home button and lock the device to one app. To exit the app, a passcode must be entered. o Usage Allows you to see how the device is used. Battery Usage See how long the device has been on since charged as well as which apps are using the most power. Storage See how much storage is being used and which apps are using the most space. o Background App Refresh Turning this on allows you to choose which apps can update there data in the background. o Restrictions Set restrictions on apps and media used on the device. o itunes Wi-Fi Sync If you back up and sync to a computer, this allows the device to backup when plugged into to power and on WiFi. o Reset Allows you to reset the phone back to a factory state. WARNING: This cannot be undone. Resetting the phone to factory state erases all of the data on the device. - Touch ID & Passcode Set a passcode and store fingerprints to unlock the device. o Touch ID Touch ID can only be used on certain devices (iphone 5s, 6 & 6 Plus). You can add up to 5 fingers in Tough ID. NOTE: You must use your passcode after the phone is restarted. NOTE: Other people may store fingerprints as well (wife, husband). o Passcode - Used to unlock the device. WARNING: Not having a passcode on your phone makes you vulnerable to theft, hacking and identity theft. Erase Data Turning this on will erase the device if the passcode is entered in 10 times incorrectly. - Privacy Change what apps can access items on your phone (camera, contacts, etc.) - icloud Allows you to share and sync data over multiple devices. 3
o Set Up Family Sharing - Allows you to link several itunes accounts under one account to share media and funds. o Find My iphone Allows you to find your devices with this enabled on a map. WARNING: Find My iphone must be disabled in order to restore a device. - itunes & App Store See the account being used to purchase items in the itunes store. o Automatic Downloads Control which (if any) items are automatically downloaded to the device when they are purchased. - Phone > Respond with Text Edit the responses that are displayed when a call comes in. These are texted to the caller instead of answering the call. - FaceTime Change the numbers / accounts that can be used to contact you via FaceTime on the device. - Music > Show All Music Show either just music on the device or everything that has been purchased in itunes as well. - Photos & Camera Change how photos are stored and shared on the device. o My Photo Stream - When enabled uploads your photos to icloud and to any other devices with it enabled. o icloud Photo Sharing When enabled, allows you to create albums that can be shared with others. Air Drop Air Drop allows you to share files with other ios devices via Wi-Fi. - NOTE: Wi-Fi must be turned on. - Access Control Center and click Air Drop. o Choose who can send and receive files. - Click the Share button on any file (photo, contacts, etc.) and choose who to send the file to. Air Play Air Play allows you to share your ios device screen or media with an Apple TV. - NOTE: Both the ios device and Apple TV are on the same Wi-Fi. - Access Control Center and click Air Play. - Choose the Apple TV and how you wish to share your screen. Mail - VIP Allows you to add email addresses to a VIP list. All email from those people will show up here. - Clicking the email account under Accounts allows you to see other folders in the account. - TIP: You can set separate email signatures for each email address in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Signature. 4
Messages - Choose a message and click Details - Location Send you location to the person(s) you are messaging. o Send My Current Location Sends a single snapshot of your location. o Share My Location Sends an updated location marker for a given time. - Do Not Disturb - Mute any further updates on the comment thread. Reminders - Reminders can be created to notify you by date or location. Camera - Touch the screen to lock the exposure level and focus. - TIP: You can edit your photos and videos within the camera or Photos app. - HDR (High Dynamic Range) and the timer work in photo and square. - Pano lets you take panoramic photos. - Slo-Mo lets you take slo-motion video. o TIP: You can click the video and adjust the time and length of the slo-mo effect. - Time-Lapse lets you take a time-lapse video by only recording a shot once every second. Photos - Shared - If you are logged into icloud, you can create Photo Sharing streams to share photos and videos with other people who have an Apple account. o Click Shared. o Click New Shared Album o Name your photo stream. o Add names to your stream from your contact list. o Click the photo stream o Click the + and add photos o Photos can be added over time. - My Photo Stream Any photos that show up in My Photo Stream will automatically be downloaded to any device you have icloud installed & logged into. o TIP: Once photos have been downloaded on your home computer, go in and delete photos from time to time to save space. o TIP: Photos in Photo Stream can be seen and downloaded on Windows (with itunes download), iphoto and Apple TV. o NOTE: Videos are not uploaded in My Photo Stream. Health - The Health app allows you to connect other health apps to share and compare data. 5
o Dashboard Lets you see a chart of selected data points over time. You can click a data set and view more detailed info. o Health Data Lets you choose which data set to add to the Dashboard. o Sources Lets you select which apps can share data with the Health app. o Medical ID Important medical data can be added here and viewed from the phone s lock screen. TIP: Adding emergency contacts here will allow someone to call them from your phone even when it is locked in case of an emergency. Passbook - Allows you to store boarding passes, movie tickets, coupons and loyalty cards in the app so they can be scanned later. - Some apps will use Passbook to store these items for you. - NOTE: Passbook is also used to store credit cards for Apple Pay but only on iphone 6 & iphone 6 Plus. Compass - After calibrating the phone, it will display a compass complete with longitude & latitude. - Swipe left on the screen to access a level feature that allows you to use the phone as a flat surface level. - TIP: Turn the phone on it s side to access a traditional level. Find My iphone - If Find My iphone is enabled in icloud, it will display on a map all of your Apple devices with it enabled. o Notify When Found If the device is offline at the time, it will let you know when it comes back online. o Play sound Causes the device to play a sound so you can locate it. o Lost Mode Locks the phone with a password and begins tracking its movement. WARNING: Any credit cards stored in Passbook will attempt to be cancelled while in Lost Mode. o Erase Phone Remotely erases the device of all data. - WARNING: As long as Find My iphone is enabled, the device cannot be wiped clean or restored without having the icloud password. - TIP: You can use the icloud website, www.icloud.com to access these features. 6
Find Friends - Find Friends allows you to use a Find My iphone like feature but with other people. o Click Add in the top corner and enter the person s name. o A request will be sent that they must accept. o You will receive a confirmation when they have accepted. - Click on a person in your list to see more info. o You can have the app notify you when that person arrives or leaves a location. - NOTE: This only works with Apple devices. Calculator - Flip the calculator on its side to access a scientific calculator. Backing Up - icloud allows you to back up 5 GB of data for free. This can be used to reload your phone in the event it has to be reset. - TIP: You can purchase additional space for a yearly fee. - Photos are backed up using Photo Stream; purchased media can be re-downloaded via itunes. - You can connect your device to a computer and backup everything via itunes. - TIP: Always make sure to back up your device before doing a major OS update in case there is a problem. 7
