Redefining High Performance Defying the inherent limitations of the stereomicroscope Ever since their invention, stereomicroscopes have operated according to the principles discovered by Ernst Abbe* and Horatio S. Greenough**. For over a century, optics designers and engineers have pushed magnification, resolution, and image fidelity to the limits of modern optical principles. Stereomicroscope optical technology advancement, over the years, has always been constrained by interrelated factors: the higher a microscope s resolution, the lower the available working distance. If one increases working distance and resolution using higher magnification objectives and lenses, the three-dimensional image seen through the eyepieces becomes distorted a sphere becomes an ellipse and a flat surface curves toward the observer. Breaking the limits of optical resolution Leica FusionOptics Leica Microsystems introduces the groundbreaking Leica M205A, M205 C, M165 C and M125 stereomicroscopes. The Leica M205 A and M205 C are the world s first stereomicroscopes with a magnification zoom range of 20.5x. This, however, is not the only technological advancement. With Leica Microsystem s new FusionOptics, the Leica M205 A and M205 C overcomes the previous limits of optical technology. In addition to increased magnification, the resolution has increased to 1050 lp/mm, which corresponds to a structure size of 476 nm without sacrificing depth of field. This new level of high performance benefits everyday work at the stereomicroscope. View samples with a new freedom of movement and discover detail that has never been seen before with a stereomicroscope. *Ernst Abbe was a German mathematician and physicist who made several of the most important contributions to the design of lenses for optical microscopy during the late 1800 s. **Horatio S. Greenough, an American instrument designer, introduced a novel design in the early 1890 s, and became the forefather of modern stereomicroscopes.
The Best Information from Every Image Fusion of high resolution and high depth of field The design principle behind the new Leica M205 A and M205 C is FusionOptics : The microscope assigns a different task to each of the microscope s two beam paths. The right channel contains an image with very high resolution, while the left channel provides very high depth of field. The best information from both sources composes one image with rich detail. High magnification with great ergonomic benefits Conventional stereomicroscopy gives users a choice: either high resolution and richness of detail, or a larger working distance for easy sample manipulation. Traditionally, the higher a microscope s resolution, the less working space there is between a sample and the microscope s objective. With a 1 objective, the Leica M205 A and M205 C reaches magnification ranges that previously required high-magnification objectives. At the same magnification, the Leica M205 A and M205 C resolve structures of less than one micrometer in size, offers a depth of field of 2.68 mm and at the same time provides 61.5 mm of free working distance for sample manipulation. Sorting and processing even the smallest details are performed easily without changing objectives. APO-corrected accessories for enhanced performance To take full advantage of the performance capability of the new Leica M205 A, M205 C, M165 C, and M125 stereomicroscopes, all new Leica M-series objectives, ergotubes, and accessories are apochromatically corrected. Unwanted color seams and curvature of field are things of the past.
Ready for Your Tasks Put Leica Microsystems to the Test! Whenever human lives may be affected, technology must be 100% reliable. For example, airplane autopilots and airbag mechanisms are subject to stringent materials testing. A wide variety of methods are used to measure the behavior and characteristics of standard material samples or finished parts (component testing) under thermal, mechanical, and chemical stress. Materials are checked for purity, faults, and load capacity. The new Leica M205 A and M205 C allows experts in the materials testing lab to see smaller structures than ever before. Leica s one-of-a-kind FusionOptics is the first stereomicroscope technology to enable both higher depth of field and resolution, simultaneously. The electronically encoded zoom allows a tester to eliminate sources of error in measurement applications and to reproduce test settings at any time. Using the Leica Application Suite (LAS) software, the tester can access all relevant data, store images in an image database, and measure and analyze the data using a computer. Leica Microsystems two new illumination sources, the Leica LED5000 MCI (Multi Contrast Illumination) and LED5000 RL (Ring Light), provide a wide range of adjustment and automation options. The Leica M205 A, M205 C, M165 C, and M125 illumination source, and automated mechanical stage form a complete system. The user can program various test cycles to run in a fully automated process. Time-savings, in addition to error prevention, are important advantages of the new Leica M205 A, M205 C, M165 C, and M125 stereomicroscopes. 6
