What is a Smart Card? Smart Card is a small plastic itelliget toke embedded with a IC chip that makes it SMART. Smart Cards provide computatioal capability alog with memory capacity. Ref:10 Smart Cards ca be used with a Smart- Card Reader attachmet to a persoal computer to autheticate a user.
History of Smart Cards Smart Card has its origi i 1970s by ivetors from Germay, Japa ad Frace. Util mid 80s most of the work o Smart Cards was at the research ad developmet level. First mass use was for paymet i Frech payphoes. The curret world populatio of Smart Cards is early 3 billio. The maufacturers of Smart Cards are Gemplus, IBM, Siemes, Telesec ad may more.
What is SMART about the Smart Card?? Smart Cards are capable of ot just storig data but also have processig power. They have larger storage capacity whe compared to magetic swipe cards. The data stored ca be protected agaist uauthorized access ad tamperig. They are appropriate for secure ad coveiet data storage. Smart cards have the property of multifuctioality.
Types of Smart Cards Based o the way the smart card iteracts with the Reader, smart cards are of two types Cotact Smart Cards: These require isertio ito the Card reader. Cotact less Smart Cards: These require close proximity of the reader.
Cotiued.. the cotact smart card cosists of small cotact plate o the face, which is ½ i Diameter. The trasmissio of data takes place whe this cotact plate comes i cotact with the coector of the reader. This card cosists of a IC Chip ad a atea coil embedded ito it. These cards are maily used whe trasactios must be processed quickly.
Categories of Smart Cards Based o the type of IC chip embedded o the Smart Card, they are categorized ito three types IC Micro Processor Cards IC Memory Cards Optical Memory Cards
Smart Card Stadards ISO7816 is the iteratioal stadard for Smart Cards that use electrical cotacts. With this stadard, Smart Cards could commuicate with the Reader usig the same protocol. The ISO7816 stadards are separated i 3 differet parts. ISO7816-1: defies the physical characteristics of the card. ISO7816-2: defies the dimesio ad cotact positio of the card. ISO7816-3: defies the electrical sigals ad trasmissio protocols.
Cotiued.. Operatig procedure for cotact smart cards is Coectio ad activatio of the cotacts reset of the card aswer to reset by the card iformatio exchage deactivatio of the cotacts

Applicatios of Smart Cards I Baks: They are used as credit/debit bak cards Medical applicatios: they ca be used as Health isurace card or Medical File Access Card. I Trasportatio Services: for urba parkig, Airlie Applicatio ad Electroic Toll Collectio. I Telecommuicatios: The smart cards cotai the phoe umber o the etwork, billig iformatio ad call umbers. used as idetificatio cards
Future Aspects Soo it will be possible to access the data i Smart cards by the use of Biometrics. Smart card Readers ca be built ito future computers or peripherals which will eable the users to pay for goods purchased o the iteret. I the ear future, the multifuctioal smart card will replace the traditioal magetic swipe card. Smart Card is ot oly a data store, but also a programmable, portable, tamper resistat memory storage.
