You can do more with Business Highway
Do you worry your customers can t reach you when you re on the Internet because your phone line is busy? Have you ever wished you had different phone numbers for your phone, your fax and your computer? Do you find it irritating having to wait up to 30 seconds for your computer to do its Internet handshake? Are you fed up of having to unplug your phone or fax when you want to connect your computer to the Internet? Is your modem too slow for sharing large files with colleagues and customers? If you ve ticked one or more of the above boxes, let Business Highway be the solution to your problem. 1
Use the phone while you re on the Internet With Business Highway, you can use your phone line to do two things at once. Business Highway converts your existing phone line into a digital line with two channels. It s like having two normal phone lines, although because Business Highway uses the latest ISDN 2e digital technology, it s faster and clearer. It s these two channels which let you do two things at once... Two people can make phone calls at the same time You can use the phone while you re on the Internet or accessing your e-mails You can make a phone call and use your fax at the same time You can send or receive faxes while you re on the Internet Two people, each on a computer, can be on the Internet at the same time, working at 64 kilobits per second (64k). So, when you re on the Internet at 64k, you can still use your phone or fax machine. You ll also notice that web pages load more quickly, and sending or retrieving e-mails is noticeably faster, especially if they include big attachments with video or graphics content. If in the future you choose to convert to a broadband connection, the yellow socket will have the capability of supporting this service. To order Business Highway, call us on Freefone 0800 672 397 or visit our website at www.bt.com/businesshighway and complete the online order form. You will still be able to enjoy all the benefits and functionality of the Business Highway service even if your installed box does not have a yellow socket. 2

Separate phone numbers for your phone, fax and computer With Business Highway, you get three phone numbers. The first is usually your existing phone number, which most people use as their main phone number. (Occasionally, for technical reasons, you may not be able to keep your existing number. If this is the case, we'll give you Caller Redirect free of charge for a year.) Your second number can be assigned to your fax machine or another phone. The third number is for your digital equipment, such as your PC or Apple Mac, so you can receive data calls via your computer. These might be from customers or suppliers sending files using fast file transfer. If you sometimes work from home, you ll be able to access your office systems more effectively using Business Highway. Or you could use the digital phone number for videoconferencing equipment, or a Group 4 fax which can send an A4 sheet in as little as three seconds. Connect to the Internet in 4 seconds If you currently connect to the Internet via a modem, you ll know how slow it can be. It can take around 30 seconds to complete the connection handshake. Unlike modems which use analogue technology, Business Highway is digital. This means it can connect to the Internet in under four seconds. It s also faster when it s connected. The V.90 modems receive data at up to 56k and send at about 33k, while Business Highway sends and receives at a guaranteed 64k or a superfast 128k if you combine both channels (see page 9). No-fuss fitting Business Highway is fast to install. Converting your existing line to Business Highway usually takes one of our engineers just a couple of hours. Bear in mind though, that your Business Highway box needs to be within 1.8 metres of a power socket and within 25m of your BT Line Box. 5
No need to plug and unplug With Business Highway you don t have to unplug your phone whenever you want to connect your computer to the Internet. In fact, you can plug five pieces of equipment into the Business Highway box. You can, for example, have three computers, plus a phone and a fax or two phones, all plugged in at the same time and any two of them can use the line at once. If you want to connect more pieces of equipment, you can use digital extension wiring to connect more items, up to a total of eight. For more guidance see www.bt.com/businesshighway. Each can also have its own phone number for an additional charge. You can also use analogue extensions from the white ports. Connecting computers to Business Highway Most PCs and Apple Mac computers made after 1998 have a USB port, identified by this symbol. If yours has one, and uses a suitable operating system (Windows 98, 98SE, 2000 Professional, Me, Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional for PCs; Mac 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, 10.1 and 10.2 for Apple Macs*), you can connect directly to the USB port on your Business Highway box. All you need do is load the driver software from the CD we provide when we install your Business Highway. If you can t connect your computer to the USB port, you can still connect to either of the digital sockets. To do so, you need an ISDN PCI Card or a Terminal Adapter. Both are available from BT or other suppliers. For PCs, ISDN PCI cards cost from around 50, and Terminal Adapters from around 100. If you have Apple Mac computers, contact your supplier for information on Apple Mac compatible equipment. *Support for additional operating systems may be added in the future. If in doubt please see www.bt.com/businesshighway. Please note, Windows 95 is not supported. Share files at a speedy 128k Your Business Highway digital line is divided into two channels that s why you can do two things at once. But you can also combine them whenever you want into a single, faster channel that can transmit or receive data at 128 kilobits per second (128k) more than twice as fast as the quickest modems. E-mail at 128k will cope better with large attachments or, if you and your correspondent are using compatible file transfer software, you can send information directly to their computer using their digital number. You ll be charged for two calls when you combine channels like this. However, it can be invaluable for downloading large files from the Internet, sharing files between work and home, or sending data rich files to suppliers or customers and your call will take less time. 128k To order Business Highway, call us on Freefone 0800 672 397 or visit our website at www.bt.com/businesshighway and complete the online order form. 9
