Chapter 1 & 2 Calculator Test Study Guide Powers and Exponents 1) To put a number to the second power, simply hit the x 2 key, then enter. 2) To put a number to the third or a higher power, key in base, then hit the exponent key, then key in your exponent, then enter. NOTE: If you are keying in a problem like this: 2 4 + 7, make sure after you put in the exponent of 4 that you hit the right arrow key to get the cursor to get out of the exponent position so you can finish the problem. Order of Operations 1) Just key in the problem as it s written. Be sure to include parenthesis if needed. Your calculator will do each operation in the correct order. 2) If a problem is written in fraction form: 28 7 hit the fraction key: n 4 + 3 d and put 28 7 as the numerator, and 4 + 3 as the denominator then hit enter. Greatest Commom Factor 1) For 2 numbers: Hit the math key, then the down arrow once until gcd is highlighted. Hit enter, the key in the first number. Hit the 2 nd key, then the decimal point to put in a comma. Now key in the 2 nd number and hit enter. 2) For 3 numbers: Follow the directions above to find the GCF of the first 2 numbers. Then do the same with the GCD of the first 2 numbers and the 3 rd number. NOTE: gcd is greatest common divisor. It s the same as GCF. Least Common Multiple 1) For 2 numbers: Hit the math key, then hit enter since lcd is already highlighted. Key in the first number. Hit the 2 nd key, then the decimal point to put in a comma. How key in the 2 nd number and hit enter. 2) For 3 numbers: Follow the directions above to find the LCD of the first 2 numbers. Then do the same with the LCD of the first 2 numbers and the 3 rd number. Fractions To key in a fraction, hit the n key. Key in the numerator, hit the down arrow, d then key in the denominator. Hit the right arrow key to continue.
Mixed Numbers To key in a mixed number, hit the U n key. Key in the whole number, then hit d the right arrow key. Key in the numerator, hit the down arrow, then key in the denominator. Hit the right arrow key to continue. Simplifying Fractions If you are solving a problem and get a fraction or mixed number as an answer, your calculator will simplify the fraction. To simplify a fraction or mixed number: 1) Hit the >simp) key. Then hit enter. If there is a down arrow to the left of the fraction, then repeat. Keep going until the arrow is gone. Then your fraction is in simplest form. Auto Simplify Mode To put your calculator in Auto Simplify mode, do the following: 1) Hit the mode key 2) Press the down cursor 5 times until mansimp is blinking 3) Press the right cursor once until autosimp is blinking 4) Press enter 5) Your calculator will now simplify all fractions automatically, so you will not have to hit the simp key to do so. It will stay in this mode until you clear the memory. Remainders If a division problem requires you to find the remainder, do the following: Example: 28 8. Key in 28. Hit the 2 nd key. Then hit the division key and 8. The answer will be displayed as 3 r 4 (3 remainder 4). Rounding To round to a desired number of decimal places do the following: 1) Hit the mode key 2) Scroll down until float is flashing 3) Use the right arrow hit until the number of decimal places you d like to round to is flashing. Then hit enter. Now hit clear and input your problem. Your choices go from 0 to 9. 0 rounds to the nearest whole number, 1 rounds to the nearest tenths, 2 to the nearest hundredths, etc. Scientific Notation If you put a problem in the calculator, and the answer has too many digits to display on the calculator the calculator will display the answer in Scientific Notation. Example 1: 2,000,000,000 x 340,000 The answer will be displayed as 6.8 x 10 14 To write the answer in decimal form you simply move the decimal point in 6.8 exactly 14 places to the right. The answer is 680,000,000,000,000
Example 2:.0000035 x.0000048 The answer will be displayed as 1.68 x 10-11 To write the answer in decimal form you simply move the decimal point in 1.68 exactly 11 places to the LEFT (since the exponent is negative). The answer is.0000000000168 Delete Key The delete key is like the backspace key on a computer. If you make a keystroke error, simply hit the delete key and it will delete the last entry you ve made only. Clearing Memory To clear the memory on your calculator, hold the on and clear keys down at the same time for a few seconds. The display should say MEMORY CLEARED. If you put the calculator in Autosimplify mode, or a mode that rounds answers to a desired number of decimal places the calculator will continue to do this until you clear the memory. Practice 1) 3 5 = 2) 2 12 = 3) 2 8 2 5 = 4) 250 500 12.5 6 = 5) (42 + 99) 3 = 6) GCF of 48 & 72 7) GCF of 24, 40, & 44 8) LCM of 12 & 22 9) LCM of 4, 9, & 21 10) 2 3 5 x 16 17 = 11) 25 1 2 1 4 =
