Basic Navigation Tap to select something on home screen To return to home screen, either press home button or pinch 4-5 fingers together Drag up or down, right or left to move among screens Dots on bottom of screen will show what page you are on To zoom in or out on photos, webpages and certain apps, double tap or pinch to zoom in or out almost anywhere IOS is the operating system and the numbers represent the version, IOS6 is the latest
View in portrait or landscape by rotating ipad To lock in either view tap on the rotate button in the multitasking bar To rearrange or delete an app, hold any app until screen jiggles Drag to move Click X to delete Home button to save arrangement Multitasking bar shows which apps are open Double tap home button or swipe up with 4-5 fingers to get to multitasking bar Swipe left or right with 4-5 fingers to switch between apps
You can have up to 11 home screens To move among them swipe left or right or tap the appropriate dot on bottom of the screen You can use folders to to organize icons To create a folder touch and hold until icons jiggle and then drag on on top of another Tap the name field for the folder to rename Notification Center shows all alerts in one place Swipe down from top to see Notification Center What shows depends on your settings Tap the notification (calendar, mail, message, reminder) to go to it
Settings Do not disturb in IOS6 - (ipad 3 only) to completely silence the device Notifications Each app has its own notificaton options Alerts can be shown in Notification Center (or not) by a banner, sound or badge General About shows you details of your ipad Software update - IOS6 is most recent, cannot upgrade ipad 1 or 2
Usage- shows how much space each app takes up and icloud storage Siri is on IOS6 - to use press and hold home button and speak ipad 2 & 3 have voice to text capability - press and hold microphone in lower left corner Passcode Lock - you can require a code to access ipad. Within this setting are other options. If you forget your passcode you must restore the ipad software. You can set restrictions by app Side Switch - use it to either mute or lock rotation Multitasking gestures - must turn on to use Sounds - on or off, can set sounds by app Brightness & Wallpaper - use presets or from your photos
icloud - IOS5 and up When you sync with icloud you can view what is synced from any computer at icloud.com To get the most from icloud, enable automatic downloads on all your Apple devices. This will give you access to all purchased items no matter which device you are using. Data is synced across all Apple devices icloud = free email account and 5GB storage.
Photos Camera Roll - taken on the ipad or saved from email, webpage, etc. Photo Stream - if turned on in settings, it will have most recent 1000 photos from all devices (doesn't count against icloud storage). You can share photos from Photo Stream with users who have IOS6 of Mountain Lion. Settings/iCloud/Photo Stream - To share: Photos/Photo Stream/+ - from you here you can also make the stream available on a public website at icloud.com
You can organize photos by creating albums. Tap + enter a name and save. Select items to add and then click done. With an ipad camera connection kit, you can import photos from a camera. You can upload photos taken on the ipad to a computer by connecting them. You can use itunes photos setting to sync photos to your ipad To take photos or videos use camera app - you can zoom in or out using pinch gesture. To take a screen shot of a web page, press home and sleep/wake button at same time for 1 second
Double tap photo to edit, email, add to a stream, share on social media, print, copy, use as wallpaper, add to slideshow or delete ipad has rudimentary editing. Other apps are iphoto Snapseed
Email Add/delete accounts in settings. You can have icloud Microsoft Exchange and Outlook Google Yahoo AOL Hotmail POP and IMAP accounts To sync contacts for a Google account, choose account / other / carddav/ server google.com / email address and password
Messages Unlimited text messages to other Apple users FaceTime Make video calls to other IOS devices or computers that support FaceTime. Reminders - set a due date and have it repeat Sharing from apps. Any time you see this icon click on it and you will have choices to email, message, copy, print or save to offline reading list. It may also include options to share on social media.
Safari Default app for browsing Internet Cloud button - access webpages left open on other Mac devices Share button - bookmark, add to offline reading list, email, etc. Clock - alarm, sleep timer, add clocks from other time zones Newsstand - organizes magazine and newspaper apps and lets you know when a new issue is ready. Tap store to purchase an app or download based on a print subscription. If you don't want new issues downloaded automatically, change the setting.
Itunes Download previous purchases Find music, tv, movie and more Redeem gift card - at bottom of screen itunes match stores music in icloud to be accessed from anywhere App Store Apps are what make the ipad and its ilk different. Apps are mini programs that do a specific thing really well. Many apps are free Prices vary There are always new apps out there. Once you have an app, chances are it will need an update - simply tap updates
To get apps go to the App Store Along the top are buttons for categories and search box to look for a specific app Along the bottom are buttons for featured, top charts (paid, free and top grossing) Genius - get recommendations Purchased - what you have, including free Updates - download updates for apps you have, either individually or update all in upper left At the very bottom of the all categories screen are groups of apps, Editors' Choice, Starter Apps, etc.,good place to start Within a list of apps, you can sort by price, relevance, etc.
Apps I Like Library Boopsie - use mobile browser to go to biblio.boopsie.com - reserve items, check your account, contact us, Overdrive Overdrive - access ebooks and eaudiobooks from the library Freading - free ebooks from library Books ibooks - First, download the free ipad manual Kindle - you can use this to read ebooks from Amazon and elsewhere ebook Search - combines sources of free ebooks
TuneIn Radio - listen to 70000 radio stations from around the world - create your own list of favorites Stitcher - listen to favorite radio shows on demand Epicurious - recipes Yelp - find restaurants Hipmunk - search for flights Google Search - search plus all Google apps in one place. Voice search works well Apps are coming out all the time - try them and if you don't like it, just delete
Printing To print, the ipad and printer need to be on the same network and the printer must by listed in airprint printers in the Apple store You can print from mail Safari ibooks - PDFs Maps - portion of the map showing on the screen Notes - currently dispayed Other apps may also support airprint Bluetooth Some supported bluetooth (Apple's wireless peripherals) devices keyboard headset speakers Bluetooth must be turned on in settings
