ESSENTIAL STANDARD Computer Basics ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS What are the parts and features of a computer? What are the functions and components of operating systems, programs, and networks?
Computer Operating Systems Lesson 4 Objectives After completing this lesson, you will be able to: Explain the common functions of an operating system. Identify the basic components of the Windows user interface. Work with the Windows user interface within programs. Manage files and folders in Microsoft Windows Explorer. Perform basic file operations.
Computer Basics Lesson 4 Computer Operating Systems Topic 1 Functions of an Operating System
Functions of an Operating System An operating system controls how programs work with each other and how they interact with the computer hardware. creates the file system that determines how your data is stored within a storage device.
GUI Operating system such as Windows XP and Windows Vista provides a GUI that makes it easier for you to give instructions to a computer. Windows Vista Windows XP
Functions of an Operating System Provides a user interface which is the way a program presents itself to a user. Many operating systems provide visual elements, such as icons and menus, to help you interact with a computer. A mouse to select icons and issue commands. Example: double clicking a file to open it
An active window is an example of a user interface User Interface
Functions of an Operating System Provides utilities to configure your system Utilities are small programs that help you perform specific functions, such as connecting to a network, managing resources, and adding new programs to your computer.
Example of Utilities
Functions of an Operating System Helps manage computer resources Programs communicate with the operating system to work with the required hardware, such as the CPU, to complete required tasks such as printing and saving documents.
Functions of an Operating System Helps secure data by controlling user access to a computer It helps you specify authentication and authorization rights to control access to your computer and its resources.
Authentication The operating system uses a process called authentication to confirm or validate logon information. If a user wants to control the access rights to their computer they can specify a user name and password to log on to the computer.
Authentication Authentication the use of user names and passwords to limit access to a computer system
Authorization Authorization is the process by which the user can associate specific permissions to each username. Administrator has rights to do everything Bob cannot print because he uses all of Mom s ink Jennifer cannot install programs Steve is not allowed to delete any files because he is only 2 years old
Authorization Authorization the process of assigning rights or permissions to each user name
