FRENCH DEMO: NICE SMART VALLEY Focus on storage

INTERFLEX DEMONSTRATORS The French DEMO NICE SMART VALLEY is located in Nice area DEMO 4A and 4B 6 technical focuses DEMO 5 DEMO 3 DEMO 1 DEMO 2 2

NICE SMART VALLEY Key figures of NICE SMART VALLEY 3 Years 6 Industrial partners 4 Experimentation areas 3 Use cases 5 M of investment 3

DEMONSTRATOR PARTNERS (1/2) 6 companies are partnering within Nice Smart Valley Enedis, the electric distribution system operator Strategic and technical coordination of the use cases Development, implementation and operation of the local flexibility platform to involve flexibility to solve DSO grid constraints Power flow computation and use of electrical flexibility Islanding of a portion of the distribution grid GRDF, the gas distribution system operator Promotion of innovative gas-based products to deliver flexibility to the electrical grid Search for local site and signature of convention with customers Development of the connection with aggregators EDF is playing the role of aggregator of electrical flexibility Recruitment of customers Deployement of agregation platform for flexibilities Deployment of«vehicle to home» Building business models for the local use of the electrical flexibility 4

DEMONSTRATOR PARTNERS (2/2) 6 companies are partnering within Nice Smart Valley ENGIE is playing the role of aggregator of electrical flexibility Aggregation and monetizing of electrical flexibility Recruitment of customers supplying flexibility Contribution to islanding Grid storage assets operation Building business models for the local use of the electrical flexibility Representing the suppliers at INTERFLEX Steering Committee GE is developing forecasting platforms Deployment of forecasting platform to allow Enedis for anticipating constraints on the distribution grid Representing the manufacturers at INTERFLEX Steering Committee Socomec is delivering the islanding solution Unscheduled islanding Balancing algortihm at the scale of the districts Automatisation of islanding process Multi-service approach for storage systems Optimisation of electrical efficiencies 5

DEMONSTRATOR SCHEDULE The project has a 3 year duration starting in January 2017. 01/2017 INTERFLEX KICK OFF CEREMONY 12/2017 SHOW ROOM COMMISSIONING 12/2019 INTERFLEX FINAL EVENT 2016 2017 2018 2019 Specifications & Conception Clients recruitment Tests Analysis DELIVERABLES Deliverables 6

USE CASES NICE SMART VALLEY has 3 use cases UC1 : Automatic islanding without any interruption of service Disconnecting automatically for a limited duration of time a district from the main grid and operating it only with local generation means (storage renewable generation) Support of local flexibility levers, such as PV injection reduction or the consumption of customers UC2: Multiservice approach for centralized storage systems Optimizing the use of storage systems, able to supply ancillary services, increase self consumption and contribute to reduce local grid constraints on the distribution grid. Collective self-consumption with a community energy storage asset, the cloud storage approach will be tested at district level Regulatory recommendations for storage UC3: Local flexibility mechanism operated by and for the DSO Setting a local flexibility mechanisms, with flexibilities operated by Engie and EDF: Purely electrical flexibilities (EV, hot water tank, storage ) Gas / electricity flexibilities (Hybrid boilers, combined heat and power) In order to reduce local grid constraints and set up a local flexibility market 7

DEMONSTRATOR PRINCIPLES Aggregators can use flexibilities to solve constriants on the distribution grid and to deliver services to national markets NATIONAL MARKETS DISTRIBUTION GRID AGGREGATO R PORTAL AGGREGATORS FLEXIBILITIES INSTRUMENTATION OF THE DISTRIBUTION GRID: METERS, SENSORS, SWITCHES 8

GEOGRAPHICAL AREA NICE SMART VALLEY has 4 experimentation fields : ITALIE Isola 2000 Plaine du Var Nice Aéroport Nice Mer Méditerranée isiands 9

ISLANDING Storage will be use to perform islanding Innovative islanding Temporary disconnection from the main grid and supply with storage and renewables Islandsas good candidates, as islanding can power the islands in case of damage on the upstream cable Remotely triggered from the Regional Control Room of Enedis Islanding involving two storage systems PV generation can be modulated through P(f) functions Customers can support the islanding through demand response 10

CLOUD STORAGE Collective self consumption with a storage system Cloud storage = a shared community storage system A legislative decree in France allows for collective self consumption downstream of the same secondary substation Nice Smart Valley will test this collective self consumption with a shared battery-based storage system Meters will contribute to reconstitute the share of consumed/generated/stored energy Consumer Consumer Consumer Consumer Storage 11

STORAGE AS A LOCAL FLEXIBILITY Storage con be used to mitigate distribution grid constraints Example of MV constraints Primary substation 1 Primary substation 1 Storage can be used as a flexibility such as demand response, but with higher reliability The value on the the distribution grid is not sufficient: storage use for the distribution grid should be seen as a bonus in a multiservice approach for storage HV MV Transformer incident Primary substation 2 HV MV Revenue from distribution grid constraints management depends strongly on the location of the storage MV MV There is no value everywhere! Primary substation 3 Primary substation 3 12
