Fire up Internet Explrer, and "all the right things" just happen, and yu're cnnected and surfing in a single step. And click n the Cnnect menu item. T discnnect, that right click n that again, and yu'll see that there is a Discnnect item. Right click n that shrtcut, and yu'll see the Cnnect item. ****************************************************************************** ************************ Dmain Name What is it? Frm www.wikipedia.rg (free encyclpedia) A dmain name usually cnsists f tw r mre parts (technically labels), separated by dts. Fr example wikipedia.rg. The rightmst label cnveys the tp-level dmain (fr example, the address en.wikipedia.rg has the tp-level dmain rg). Each label t the left specifies a subdivisin r subdmain f the dmain abve it. Nte that "subdmain" expresses relative dependence, nt abslute dependence: fr example, wikipedia.rg cmprises a subdmain f the rg dmain, and en.wikipedia.rg cmprises a subdmain f the dmain wikipedia.rg. In thery, this subdivisin can g dwn t 127 levels deep, and each label can cntain up t 63 characters, as lng as the
whle dmain name des nt exceed a ttal length f 255 characters. But in practice sme dmain registries have shrter limits than that. A hstname refers t a dmain name that has ne r mre assciated IP addresses. Fr example, the en.wikipedia.rg and wikipedia.rg dmains are bth hstnames, but the rg dmain is nt. **************************************************************************** What is DNS Frm www.widipedia.rg The dmain name system (DNS) stres and assciates many types f infrmatin with dmain names, but mst imprtantly, it translates dmain names (cmputer hstnames) t IP addresses. It als lists mail exchange servers accepting e-mail fr each dmain. In prviding a wrldwide keywrd-based redirectin service, DNS is an essential cmpnent f cntemprary Internet use. Useful fr several reasns, the DNS pre-eminently makes it pssible t attach easy-t-remember dmain names (such as "wikipedia.rg") t hard-t-remember IP addresses (such as 66.230.200.105). Humans take advantage f this when they recite URLs and e-mail addresses. In a subsidiary functin, the dmain name system makes it pssible fr peple t assign authritative names withut needing t cmmunicate with a central registrar each time.
