Failure to heed the instructions can result in injury, damage to the vehicle or unit damage. CAUTION: To prevent injury and damage to the unit, please read and follow the instructions in this manual. We want you to enjoy this system, not get a headache. CAUTION: If you feel unsure about installing this system yourself, have it installed by a qualifi ed Rockford Fosgate technician. CAUTION: Before installation, disconnect the vehicle battery, both positive (+) and negative (-) terminals, to prevent damage to the unit, fi re and/or possible injury. CAUTION: For your safety, ensure the ipod interface module is mounted in a location that will not interfere with the proper and safe operation of the vehicle. 2009 Rockford Corporation. Installation It is recommended that installation only be performed by a qualifi ed professional. Beware of sharp edges to avoid injury and exercise caution when removing trims as they may break. The module should be placed at an accessible location to allow an AUX cable to be connected, such as in the glove box, the center console or under the front seat. Ensure the mounting location does not interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle (i.e.. near steering, foot pedal controls, parking brake or shifter). 1. Be sure to carefully read and understand the instructions before attempting to install the unit. 2. Disconnect both battery terminals. These cables must be disconnected during installation to ensure proper initialization of the interface module when it is connected. NOTE: On some vehicles you will need to access the trunk area. 3. Locate your CD Changer harness as follows; In most vehicles this will be located in the trunk on the left hand side (driver s). BMW X3 Harness is located underneath carpeting under the center console. BMW Z4 Harness is located between the seats, underneath subwoofer. Mini Cooper/Cooper S Harness is located on the right hand side (passenger) of the trunk area. 4. DSP Integration To see if your vehicle has DSP look for a bare metal coax cable and a 3-pin connector. If you don t fi nd a coax cable and fi nd a 6-pin connector along with a 3-pin connector, your vehicle doesn t need this DSP kit. NOTE: If your vehicle has Digital Signal Processing (DSP), the purchase of a RFIPOD-BMW-DSP kit may be necessary.. 5. Remove carpet and side cover to gain access to CD Changer BUS harness. If CD Changer is present, it will need to be disconnected and/or removed. IMPORTANT: Before connecting the interface harness, ensure that the 3 pin connector on the vehicle harness does not have a brown wire in the middle (pre-wire for phone). Proper connection is to a 3 pin connector with the brown wire to the side (pre-wire for CD). Incorrect connection will result in damage to the interface and not covered by warranty. 6. Locate both the 3-pin & 6-pin connectors in the trunk area. If the CD Changer is present, disconnect the cables and set aside. If no CD Changer is present, the cables will be bundled and tucked away in the rear trunk area. IMPORTANT: Some vehicles will have the CD Changer harness in a protective sheath which may make it more diffi cult to fi nd. Vehicles sold outside the USA may not be pre-wired. 7. Connect both 3-pin and 6-pin harnesses from the vehicle to the interface harness. 8. Fold down rear seats (if applicable) and route the interface harness to the rear seat bottom cushion. 9. Remove bottom seat cushion by lifting up and route harness underneath. 5

Installation 10. Route the remainder of the interface harness in the best possible manner (e.g. under the door sill or under the drivers seat) and connect it to the Vehicle connector on the interface module. NOTE: When routing harnesses or cables, ensure they are secured away from sharp edges and moving parts by the use of cable ties. 11. Connect the ipod cable to the interface module and carefully route it to the location where the ipod will be mounted (such as the glove box or center console). 12. Verify that all connections have been properly made. 13. Reconnect the vehicle battery, turn the ignition on and test the unit. Use the Text Display Settings proceedure below to make fi nal adjustments before reinstalling any panels/trim. Text Display Settings Make sure to select the appropriate text display setting during the initial setup of this kit. To confi gure text display on BMW radios, press DISC 6 then select a Track number that corresponds to the designated display from the chart below. Operation Connecting Your ipod Simply connect your ipod to the interface cable coming from the interface Charging Icon module. The interface automatically charges the battery of the ipod when connected and the key is in the ACC/ON position. The charging icon will appear on the upper right corner of the ipod screen to indicate charging. NOTE: We recommend disconnecting your ipod when not in use or when the vehicle is turned off. 6

ipod Hierarchy Operation By default, the interface creates a Playlist having a name that is the same as the name of the ipod. This Playlist is the very fi rst on the list of Playlists shown while browsing in Playlist mode. This Playlist contains all the songs on the ipod. Once a Playlist is active an Artist may be selected within that Playlist using the Artist Mode. Albums by the selected Artist and within the selected Playlist may be selected in Album Mode. ALL ARTIST and ALL ALBUM designate all available content in those categories. Operating Controls Press the MODE button to access the interface and its features. Pressing this button repeatedly will cycle through sources present (internal CD if present, followed by external) in your vehicle. When the ipod audio source is active (displayed as DISC 5, Track 1), use the TRACK button to select next/previous song. Auxiliary Audio Source Connecting The interface is equipped with a 1/8 AUX jack input to connect an auxiliary device, such as an MP3 player, DVD player or other audio source. NOTE: We recommend to only connect to the interface module when the vehicle ignition is turned off. 1/8 AUX Interface Module Connect into the interface module from connector your auxiliary device with a cable that has a 1/8 mini stereo jack (not included). Selecting AUX Input To access the AUX audio source, select DISC 5, Track 2 or Preset 5, Channel 2 (depending on the radio model). AUX audio source settings The auxiliary input has settings for Gain (volume), Bass, Mid and Treble for optimizing sound. Gain (Volume) should be adjusted if the audio level from the auxiliary device is too low or too high. If you hear distorted audio while playing the auxiliary device, you need to reduce (-) the gain. If you notice that the audio is too quiet then the gain setting should be increased (+). The default setting for gain is 68 and may be adjusted in increments between 01-99. Bass, Mid and Treble default settings are 50 and can be adjusted between 01-99 to compensate for the acoustic presets of the radio. Making the adjustments While listening to the auxiliary device, use the DISC or PRESET buttons (depending on the radio model) to move between the settings as follows; DISC (PRESET)-1 for Gain (Volume) DISC (PRESET)-2 for Bass EQ DISC (PRESET)-3 for Mid EQ DISC (PRESET)-4 for Treble EQ Then use the TUNE or SEEK button to adjust the setting (depending on the radio model the TUNE knob can be rotated for this function). NOTE: If you are using an auxiliary device that is using the vehicle s power source and not its own battery, you may have to use a GROUND-LOOP isolator to avoid engine and grounding noise. 9

Troubleshooting Problem Cannot select the interface. Radio/NAV display only shows DISC and Track number, but there is no ipod control. No audio from ipod source. Radio/steering wheel controls do not operate ipod. Music is distorted or sound level is too low. No text displayed. Correct DIP switch setting, but still no text displayed. ipod does not charge.
