Five ways to bring more of your target audience to your website and see your search engine ranking improve organically. Whether you are looking for your nearest grocery shop, wanting to find the telephone number of a restaurant, looking for directions or ordering clothes online, you will nearly always turn to Google. As a business owner, one of the most important things that you can do to ensure the success of your business is work to ensure your website comes up before your competitors and performs well on search engines. Just as businesses thrive when they solve a problem, websites will rank higher if they meet people s needs. Due to the ever changing nature of Google s algorithms, it isn t as straightforward as one would hope to improve your sites search engine ranking. That s why it is so important to stay up to date with what works in terms of SEO because outdated strategies will only see you fall behind other businesses in your sector. This white paper will outline 5 of the current, most valuable things you can do to improve your website s rankings on the likes of Google, Bing and Yahoo, which, in turn, will bring more traffic to your website and consistently see an increase in your revenue. 2

1) Keyword Research In layman s terms, keywords are what the words you want your site to be picked up on by your target audience. The keywords you use for your site need to be the best possible match to what your customers will search into Google. The most advanced tool you can use to discover how many people search for the terms you are looking to use on your site is Google Keyword Planner - https://adwords.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/ You can sign up for free and simply by typing in your keyword ideas, you can see how many people search that term on average in any given area each month. For a business starting out, it might be a good idea to choose keywords which don t have too much competition but the bigger and more established your business, the more likely it will be that you can compete with other businesses, similar to your own, for a high ranking on search engines. If you can find a keyword with a high number of searches each month but a low amount of competition then you will be in a great place to start converting those people from strangers to your business into customers. They are already there, searching for resolutions and your business can provide them with those. You just need to make sure that is clear from your website and its written content. Another benefit of using Google Keyword planner is that you can play around with different variations of your businesses keyword ideas to see what exactly your target audience is typing in. If your chosen keywords aren t quite the right terminology for your target audience then they will not be directed to your site and all of the work you ve put into your website will go unnoticed. Search as many alterations of your keywords as you can think of to be sure that the ones you choose are exactly what people are typing into search engines the most. 3

2) Prioritise Search engines as big as Google have made it difficult for one company to rank highly on a huge number of keywords. Even if you have different sites for various sides to your business, the owner of the domain will be seen as the business owner, and, as we have just established, you will not be allowed to come up top on search engines for a long list of keywords. It is, therefore, essential that your business prioritises which terms they want to rank highly for and puts time into those to see their search engine rankings improve. Initially, two different keywords are enough to focus on for your company. Once you have researched which keywords have the potential to bring the highest number of people from your target audience to your site then it is time to work on the top one, two or, maximum, three keywords / terms. 3) Reflection of Keywords in Online Copy and Content Here is where your research starts to be put to use. The keywords you have decided on need to be put into your copyrighted material and the other content you publish online. It is crucial to note that overloading your website with your keywords will make Google question what your intentions are and you will risk having your site pushed back down search engine rankings. So, without overloading every paragraph you write online with your keywords, you can implement your chosen keywords and terms into your website. Creating landing pages for your keywords is the first step. The text you write on your landing page needs to include the exact keywords with any capital letters, too. Google will ignore any prepositions in your the keywords you put in your content but so it won t effect your SEO if you include words like in or on. Make sure your content is interesting and helpful for your readers and directs them to where they can contact you or order from you with the help of your keywords. 4

4) Regular Updates and Links Search engines will prioritise sites which have done well at incorporating their keywords into content but also fast, mobile optimised sites and ones which have been linked to via other websites. This step is all about ensuring that your website is updated. There are a number of ways to do this; first, check that your website is running on the newest version of the platform it was built on. Your web developer should be able to assist you with this or, if you built the site yourself, you can check on your dashboard once you ve logged in to see if there are any updates available. Newly updated websites will load faster and have less glitches or issues then older versions. To check how your site looks on a mobile device then you can preview all of the content before you post it and see how it would appear on a range of different appliances. Seeing as the amount of traffic coming from mobile devices is ever rising and currently at around 50%, it is fundamental to ensure that your website looks and functions well on mobiles. Having links on other websites which will take viewers to your site will also improve search engine rankings. Try and get your customers and clients to put links on their own website to yours, you can use incentives to do this if you want. Another idea to get backlinks it to post guest blogs on other sites which will be interesting to that blogger s audience but also signpost them to your website. 5) Keep Up Exploration and Analysis Consistency with your keywords, updates and reviewing your strategy will be what makes sure every approach you take to improve your search engine ranking is rewarding. Perform regular analysis of your methods and never underestimate the usefulness of checking back with keyword planner. 5
