Types of Installations Each type of configuration has different hardware requirements. To determine the minimum system requirements for a specific configuration, you must decide which type of installation you will perform. Please answer the questions below to decide. To determine your installation type, answer these questions. 1. What platform am I using? If you are using Windows, you will need to go to the chart on page 2; if you are using Mac OS X, you will need to go to the chart on page 3. The installation options are very similar for both platforms, but the Mac OS X installations all require a licensing server to be installed on a computer running a supported Windows operating system. 2. What type of installation am I performing? You may perform a network, local media, or standalone installation, depending on the platform. Locate the chosen type of installation, based on your access to a network, in the first column of the chart on page 2 for Windows users, or page 3 for Mac OS X users. 3. Where are the media going to be stored? Decide where the media will be stored. Locate your option in the second column of the chart on page 2 for Windows users, or page 3 for Mac OS X users. Your options are described below: For network installations (Windows & Mac), a full network (Windows) or shared media with shared (Mac) installation will store the media on the server; a local media with networked installation will store the media on the client hard drive. For standalone installations (Windows), all required are stored on the client hard drive, so no access to the network is needed. For local media with local installations (Mac), all of the program and can be stored on the client hard drive, but this installation requires a network connection to a supported Windows operating system for the licensing system. 4. Am I performing a new installation or an upgrade? Do you have ELLIS Essentials 2.7 or 2.7.1 already installed? If ELLIS Essentials 2.7 or 2.7.1 is not already installed, all of the needed for 2.8 will be installed on your computer; if ELLIS Essentials 2.7 or 2.7.1 is already installed, only the changed or added will be loaded on your computer. These options will not change the operating system requirements. Minimum System Requirements 1 2010, Pearson Digital Learning

Installation Charts The charts below outline the types of installation possible for each platform. They are subdivided by type of installation and the location where the media will be stored. The last column displays the page number for a diagram of the configuration. Windows Type of Installation Storage Option See page Server Network Installation Full Network If you install on a network, you can store the media on the server. This option allows you to save client hard drive space, but it requires at least 100 Mbit per second network bandwidth. It is an excellent installation option because the media only has to be installed once. Client hard drive 11 Local with Networked Records You can store the media on the hard drives of individual clients while sharing Records over a network connection. This option requires enough hard drive space on each computer for the media storage. See requirements below for hard drive space. 12 Computer hard drive Standalone Installation If you choose the standalone installation (no or are shared over a network connection), you must install the media on the hard drive of each computer; a network connection is not required. 13 Minimum System Requirements 2 2010, Pearson Digital Learning

Installation Charts Mac OS X Type of Installation Storage Option See page Single client hard drive Network Installation Shared Shared Records You can have one Mac client store and share the media. All of the other clients connect to this client to access the media. Records are stored on this Mac, a Netware 6.5 machine, or the licensing server. Licensing must be handled by a Windows machine. Each client hard drive 14 Local with Networked Records You can store the media on the hard drives of individual clients while sharing Records over a network connection. This option requires sufficient hard drive space on each computer for the media storage. Licensing must be handled by a Windows machine. 15 Computer hard drive Local with Local Records If you choose the local media with local installation (no or are shared over a network connection), you must install the media on the hard drive of each computer. A network connection is required to connect to the licensing server. Licensing must be handled by a Windows machine. 16 Minimum System Requirements 3

Installation/Licensing Server System Requirements The domestic and international Windows Server system requirements are the same. International customers can use only the English, Chinese, or Spanish versions of the operating system. A Windows Server installation is required in order to provide licensing for Mac clients. Pearson recommends that, in the interest of decreasing required RAM, this installation not be used to run the Essentials program. Beginning with Essentials 2.8, the Windows Server installer will set up the licensing components wherever it is installed. Potential Installation Locations Windows It is recommended that the media and the licensing system be maintained on the same server for Windows installations; however Records can be stored on a different server than the media and licensing system. Please see the network configuration diagrams for more information. Minimum System Requirements 9 2010, Pearson Digital Learning

Client System Requirements Mac OS X As shown in the table below, there are several different types of installations, depending on where the, media, and NLG are located. The system requirements described on the previous pages will be the same regardless of which location is chosen. You must be logged in as an administrator to complete any of these installations. Every installation must have an ELLIS Licensing System (ILS) and it must be running Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2003 Server, Windows XP Pro with SP3, Windows Vista Business with SP2, or Windows Vista Ultimate with SP2. This is where the information about client licenses will be kept. Your installation will also need a Mac where the product is first installed, called the Installation Server. This can be one of two locations: The first is an Installation Mac, which can be used if there will be ten or fewer clients with simultaneous access to the software. This computer will only be used as a server to store any not installed on the client Mac machines. The second is on each client Macintosh. Neither of these locations needs to be running a server operating system. The next part of the installation is choosing where the Records will be stored. The Records can be installed on the Windows system that is being used for the ILS, the Installation Macintosh that is serving as the installation server, a computer running NetWare 6.5, or any client Macintosh. The same Records database can be used for both Macintosh and Windows clients. The fourth part of the installation is choosing where the NLG and NLH will be stored. As with the Records, they can be stored on the Windows system, the Installation Macintosh, the NetWare 6.5 computer, or any client Macintosh. The final step is installing the media. These must be stored on at least one shared client Macintosh in the lab and may be installed on each client Mac. Type of Files Installation Location Windows system 1 Install Macintosh 2 NetWare 6.5 Server 3 Client Macintosh 2 Licensing/Installation Server X Records X X X X NLG/NLH X X X X X X 1 Running Windows 2008 Server, Windows 2003 Server (for more than 10 clients and when used for Records or NLG storage) or Windows XP Pro with SP3, Windows Vista Business with SP2, or Windows Vista Ultimate with SP2 (for fewer than 10 clients when not used for Records or NLG storage) 2 Running Macintosh OS X 10.5.8 or later 3 Running Netware 6.5 with Service Pack 3 Minimum System Requirements 10

Network Configuration Diagrams Windows Full Network for Windows The full network installation keeps all of the and together on the server with the licensing system. This option minimizes the space taken up on the client computers, but requires a network connection to connect the clients with the server. (optional) Switch, connects the server to the clients Client computers, use a network connection to access the licensing system and student, as well as the if they are stored on the server. The media are stored on each client s hard drive. The Local with Networked Records installation works better for labs with a slower network connection and more space on the hard drive of the client machines. Each client has the media installed on it; the same can be done with the. This means that the clients only need to communicate with the server to update or retrieve Records and licensing information. Minimum System Requirements 12

Network Configuration Diagrams Standalone for Windows Client computers, the media,, and student are stored on each computer s hard drive. Each machine is individually licensed. The Standalone option allows students to work from computers that are not connected to a network. The Records, media, and are all stored on each client s hard drive and licensing is handled by each machine individually. Minimum System Requirements 13

Network Configuration Diagrams Mac OS X Shared Shared Records for Mac OS X The shared media and shared installation uses a Windows machine for the licensing system. The media,, and Records are all stored on the lab administrator s computer. They are accessed from there by the clients. This installation setup is identical to the local media with networked, except instead of using a second server, the lab administrator s computer is utilized for storing the media and Records.
