Release Notes Fiery Print Controller MX-PEX3 version 1.1 This document contains information about the Fiery Print Controller MX-PEX3 software version 1.1. Before using the Fiery Print Controller MX-PEX3 with version 1.1, make copies of these Release Notes and distribute them to all users. NOTE: This document uses the term Fiery X7 to refer to the Fiery Print Controller MX-PEX3. Before printing to the Fiery X7, install user and system software version 1.1 on the Fiery X7. Windows Vista is supported on version 1.1 user software for printer drivers only. The Windows Vista printer drivers are provided in a separate folder from the Windows printer drivers on the User Software DVD. Setup Static IP address If you enter the wrong IP address manually during setup, there is no way to go back and set the IP address automatically. You must reboot the system to start setup again. Multiple patch names on Configuration page If you install the same patch more than once, the Configuration page displays the patch name multiple times. Only the latest patch installed is applied. Avoid installing the same patch multiple times. Printing from USB media If you cannot print files using a USB media device, enable DNS and PrintMe. Any file that is not already defined by a Page Description Language (PDL) does not print unless PrintMe is enabled. Secure Erase The Secure Erase option, which is enabled in Server Setup, operates on deleted jobs only, not on all printed jobs. LDAP authentication If the Fiery X7 is configured to use LDAP authentication, use the following procedure to print from a Windows computer to the Fiery X7. Copyright 2008 Electronics for Imaging, Inc. Part Number: 45073401 18 March 2008
Page 2 TO PRINT FROM A WINDOWS COMPUTER TO THE FIERY X7 USING LDAP 1 Printing from an application, select the Fiery X7 as the printer and click Properties. 2 Click the Job Info icon. 3 Clear the Use Windows Login check box under User Authentication. 4 Type your user name and password, and then click OK. The user name must be in the form of <domain name>\<user name>. For example, if the domain name is sharp.co.jp and the user name is suzuki, enter sharp\suzuki. If you do not include the domain name, a RIP error occurs. NOTE: The format of a domain name can differ depending on the networks used. Contact your system administrator for the correct format of your domain name. NOTE: If your Windows user name is the same as your LDAP user name, you do not need to clear the Use Windows Login check box or enter your user name. Scan to Desktop setting on MFP To use the Scan to Desktop function of the MFP, set the port number of the network scanner tool of your computer to 4687. 1 Run the network scanner tool and go to the System Options tab. 2 Under Network Scanner Service Settings, change the Port Number to 4687. HTTPS setting on MFP To enable HTTPS on an MFP that has HTTPS capability, set the HTTPS port number of the MFP to 18443. 1 In the Web Setting screen of the MFP, select Port Control from the Security Settings menu. 2 Change the Port Number for HTTPS to 18443. NOTE: You must enter the administrator password to change this setting. Name of Printer Drivers CD When you are installing Fiery X7 printer drivers and are required to insert the disk containing the printer driver software, the name of the CD you are required to insert may be displayed as DiskID1. Instead, please insert the disk entitled User Software DVD that is included with your Fiery X7 Media Pack.
Page 3 Windows printer drivers Windows Vista Windows Vista printer drivers are provided in a separate folder from other printer drivers on the User Software DVD. The Fiery X7 Vista printer drivers are supported for Windows Vista 32- and 64-bit. Port 9100 When Port 9100 is used for the printer port, a job with a large number of pages may stop printing before the job has completed. If this happens frequently, use the LPR port and print queue for printing. Duplex settings with BookletMaker In the PCL printer driver, Duplex set as Top-Top with BookletMaker Double Print or Speed Print may output as Top-Bottom. Duplex set as Top-Top with other BookletMaker settings outputs correctly. Back Cover and Front Cover (PCL printer driver) In the PCL printer driver, the Back Cover and Front Cover options displayed in the Layout window are for booklet printing only. These options are different from the Back Cover Mode and Front Cover Mode options displayed in the Media window, which are used for non-booklet jobs. Booklet jobs If you print a booklet job using the PostScript printer driver, the orientation of the booklet is rotated 180 degrees, compared to the same booklet printed using the PCL printer driver. PCL printer driver output If you encounter the following issues when printing using the PCL printer driver, try printing the same job using the PostScript printer driver: Characters of a particular font are missing. An image appears degraded. The output has unexpected blank pages. A spreadsheet is missing background color in some cells. Two versions available Two versions of the Windows printer driver (PostScript or PCL) are available. The eu version supports UK English. The version without eu supports US English.
Page 4 Changing installed options If you change the installed options on the Configuration tab of the printer driver Properties window, you must click OK to update the print option settings to reflect the newly installed options. Changing IP address If Two-Way Communication is enabled in the PostScript or PCL printer driver and you change the IP address on the Ports tab of the printer Properties window, the IP address for Two-Way Communication is not updated unless you close the window by clicking OK. Clicking Apply and leaving the window open does not update the IP address. Mac OS X printer driver Selecting Fiery X7 PPD on Mac OSX When you add the Fiery X7 PPD on a Mac OSX computer using either the IPP or LPD protocol, the PPD is not selected automatically. You must select the PPD manually. Saving job settings When you specify print settings for a job by clicking the Printer Features button in the Mac OSX printer driver, the job prints with the correct settings, but the settings are not saved. To save the settings, you must create a Preset and use the Preset for future printing. Selecting Saddle Unit by mistake If you select Saddle Unit in the installable options list, all finishing options are disabled. To correct this, you must specify Saddle Unit as Not Installed, and then you are able to select the desired finisher. Retrieving a FreeForm master On Mac OS X, you cannot retrieve and preview a created master from the Fiery X7. You can only create the FreeForm master on Mac OS X. On Windows systems, you can retrieve and preview a created master. Saving PDF or PS files When you set Image Shift with duplex settings, save the file as a PDF or PS file, and then print the file, the job prints single-sided without the Image Shift settings. If you print with the settings from the driver without saving the file as a PDF or PS file, the job prints with the correct settings. Resolving print option conflicts in the Mac OS X v10.4 printer driver When you change print options in the Mac OS X v10.4 printer driver, specifically in the Printer Features pane, the print option conflicts are not resolved appropriately.
Page 5 For example, to select a setting for the Booklet Maker print option, the Duplex (2-sided Printing) print option must be set to On before the Booklet Maker print options are available. The Booklet Maker print options are dependent on the Duplex (2-sided Printing) print option. In previous Mac OS versions, the print option conflicts were automatically corrected. To resolve the print option conflicts in the Printer Features pane, use the following procedure: TO RESOLVE PRINT OPTION CONFLICTS IN THE PRINTER FEATURES PANE 1 Select a different pane. For example, if you are in the Printer Features pane, select the Summary pane. After you refresh the Printer Features pane, there is a mismatch between the selected Feature Set group and the print options that appear. For example, if the last Feature Set that you changed was Image Quality 1, the pane now appears with the print options for the previous Feature Set, such as Finishing 1. 2 Reselect the Feature Set group (for example, Image Quality 1) to refresh the print options displayed. 3 Select the appropriate print options and print the job. Printer name and location information When you select a printer and click Printers: Show Info: Name and Location, the location name and queue name are incorrect and the host name is unavailable. This is a Mac OS limitation. Driver version When you select a printer, click Printers: Show Info: Name and Location, and search for Driver Info, the driver version is not correct. This is a Mac OS limitation. Printing Large size print job If you are sending a large size print job, the Fiery X7 may not receive the print job and will; not start printing. For example, a job with 200 photo images may not print because it may exceed 2Gb in size. If this happens, reduce the size of the print job by dividing it into smaller jobs. Printing saddle stitch jobs When sending a saddle stitch job which is not Letter size, you must manually change the print size to the correct size of the job. For instance, if the job is 11x17, you must set print to size 11x17.
Page 6 Counter limit Even though the counter limit for a multiple-page job is set to print one page, more than one page is printed before the MFP stops printing the job. Scaling a document When sending an 11x17 document size job from the PostScript printer driver to print on Letter size paper, make sure to select Scale to Fit in Job Properties, otherwise job does not scale to fit selected output correctly. You can also select Scale to Fit in Command WorkStation Job Properties, or enable Scale to Fit in the PS Setup area of Fiery X7 Setup. For more information, see Configuration and Setup. Sending two Secure Print jobs If two Secure Print jobs are sent without a pause and the first one starts printing while you are sending the second one, the second job may not appear on the MFP touch panel. The job is stored in the Secure Print queue, but not displayed. As a workaround, when sending more than one secure print job, wait for one job to finish printing before sending the next one. Or send the two jobs before printing starts. Mismatched media types When the paper source is specified for a job, the Fiery X7 feeds the paper from the specified tray, even if the tray on the MFP is loaded with a different media type than specified in the printer driver. To avoid mismatched media types, make sure the tray is loaded with the desired media type. Landscape job with Mirror On If you send a Landscape Letter job and select Mirror On, the job rotates 180 degrees. GBC punch constraints The GBC punch feature may not work when sending a job with mixed size originals. When a Letter-R size document is printed on Letter paper size, or an A4-R size document on A4 paper size, using the GBC punch unit, the GBC punch unit may not work. The GBC punch unit only supports Letter and A4 paper sizes, so a document created by Micorosoft Word should use either Letter or A4 document size if you want to use it with the GBC punch unit. Multiple copies output as group If you send multiple copies of a job through USB Media Server, the job may print the copies grouped rather than sorted.
Page 7 Z-folding print option If you select Letter or A4 as the paper size and specify Z-Fold as On, the job is output without the Z-fold. To output the job correctly with the Z-fold, select Letter-R or A4-R in the Print Size option on the Media tab. NOTE: When a paper size different from the desired size to be output is automatically set in Print Size because of a conflict, manually select the desired size (from the sizes not grayed out) in Print Size on the Media tab. Selecting Transparency as Media Type If you select Manual Feed as the Paper Source in the Media area of the printer driver, Transparency is disabled in the Media Type menu. To make sure that Transparency is enabled, set Face Down Printing to Face Up. Duplex and Stapling conflicts If you try to print a Letter/A4 job with Duplex set to Top-Bottom and double stapling, the job prints incorrectly. Invalid paper sizes The following paper sizes are invalid when Tray 5 and A4/Letter LCC are selected, although they show as valid choices: Invoice R (Statement LEF) A5 Custom paper Pages remain in compiler after job cancelled If you cancel a job that is printing, the pages already printed are not ejected to the output tray. They remain in the compiler. No warning is issued. Fiery X7 status incorrect If a printing job is stopped because of an error condition (such as out-of-paper) and then the job is resumed after the error condition is fixed, the Fiery X7 display incorrectly indicates that the Fiery X7 is idle. Cover printed with incorrect media If you use the Mixed Media option to add a cover to a job and specify a Media Type that does not match the MFP setting for the Paper Source that you specify, the cover is printed using the media loaded in the tray anyway. You are not prompted to load the specified media into the tray.
Page 8 Language-dependent characters Do not use language-dependent characters, such as an umlaut, in watermarks and in notes from the printer driver. If you use these characters, they will not display correctly in Command WorkStation. Print options Printing multiple duplexed booklet copies When you print multiple copies of a duplexed booklet job, make sure that Collate is not selected within the application. USB Media printing to Direct connection does not support Duplex If you print a duplex job to the Direct connection using the USB Media Server, the job is printed single-sided. Print the job to the Print Queue instead. Print Size Unless you are printing a booklet job, always set the Print Size option to Same as Document Size. Mixed Media and VDP jobs The Mixed Media option is not supported for variable data printing (VDP) jobs, though the printer driver allows you to select VDP options when you have already selected the Mixed Media option. Duplex cover pages The Mixed Media feature does not constrain the Duplex setting of the Front Cover and Back Cover to be the same. You can set the Front Cover to print Top-Top and the Back Cover to print Top-Bottom. 11x17 portrait job cannot be punched at left edge Printing a job with 11x17 paper size, Portrait orientation, and Punch on the left edge is not supported. However, the printer driver does not prevent you from selecting this combination. Specifying Paper Size for Mixed Media jobs If you print a job with mixed page sizes (using the Mixed Media option), do not select an envelope size (such as C5) for the Paper Size. Otherwise, the Fiery X7 prompts you load envelope media for non-envelope pages. Stapling and 2-up If you print a job with Layout set to 2-up, Stapler Mode set to Double, and Duplex set to Top-Top, the staples are applied to the long edge of the paper, if you print using LEF paper. The staples are applied to the short edge of the paper if you print using SEF paper.
Page 9 User Authentication for LDAP users User Authentication in the printer driver is supported for LDAP users only when printing from a Windows computer in the LDAP domain. When printing from Mac OS X or a Windows computer not in the LDAP domain, User Authentication is supported only for local users. Command WorkStation Multiple print jobs The list of jobs waiting to print is displayed on the MFP touch panel Job Queue, up to 10 jobs at a time. You can select jobs in the Job Queue to view the details, but only the top job in the list can be stopped or deleted. Number of pages The number of pages shown for an active job in Command WorkStation is not accurate until the job is RIPped. Preview rotated If you print a booklet job using the PostScript printer driver, the preview of the job is rotated 90 degrees when it is being processed in Command WorkStation. If you print the same job with the PCL printer driver, the preview is not rotated. PCL job properties When you send a PCL job to the Fiery X7 and connect to Command WorkStation, the Basic tab in the job properties does not contain any information. Job Log If you send a job from your computer, and then cancel the job from Printer Settings on the MFP touch panel, the job may still print. However, the Command WorkStation Job Log may still display the Print Status for the job as Cancelled. Command WorkStation, Macintosh Edition archived jobs Archived jobs saved from Mac OS X Command WorkStation, Macintosh Edition cannot be saved after the file is modified from Preview. Delete waiting jobs If you send a secure print job, verify that the job is saved from the MFP, and from Command WorkStation select Delete Waiting Jobs from the Clear Server menu, the secure print job is also deleted. Backing up and restoring fonts With Command WorkStation, you can back up and restore fonts. This feature is described incorrectly in Command WorkStation Help.
Page 10 Observe these guidelines before backing up or restoring fonts: You can back up and restore only PostScript fonts. All fonts are backed up or restored. You cannot select individual fonts. Do not back up fonts to an internal hard drive that also contains the Fiery X7 system software. You must restore fonts only to the same Fiery X7 from which the fonts were originally backed up. TO BACK UP OR RESTORE FONTS 1 Start Command WorkStation and log in as Administrator with the appropriate password. 2 From the Server menu, choose Manage Fonts. 3 Click Backup or Restore. 4 In the window that appears, navigate to the folder where you want to back up the fonts or restore them. 5 Click OK. WebTools WebTools on Windows Server 2003 If you see a blank page when you open WebTools on a Windows client with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 installed, try the following: 1 Type the IP address for the Fiery X7 in your Internet Explorer browser to open the WebTools page. 2 In Internet Explorer, select Internet Options from the Tools menu. 3 Click the Security tab, select Trusted Sites, and click Sites. 4 Add the IP address of the Fiery X7 to the list of web sites and click OK. 5 Close Internet Explorer. When you connect to the Fiery X7 again, the issue should be resolved and you should see the WebTools page. Configure When you start the Configure WebTool, click Yes when the Security Alert window appears. If the Hostname Mismatch window appears, click Yes. Refresh and Update On the Docs tab, the Refresh Status setting controls a periodic update of the Printer Status area. The Update button next to the Refresh Status setting allows you to manually update the Printer Status and the Printed Docs list.
Page 11 Hot Folders Hot Folders v2.x on Mac OS X v10.4.x Files submitted to Hot Folders v2.x on a local Mac OS X v10.4.x computer or a network location may not recognize submitted file formats, even though the file is correct and valid. This commonly occurs if the files are in a network folder that is accessed via the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP). This does not occur if the files are in a network folder that is accessed via SMB. To work around this, set all submitted Hot Folders files with permissions to Read and Write or Read. If your files are on the network, move them to your local computer, change the file permissions, and then resubmit the files to Hot Folders. If you are working from a Mac OS computer, you must first unlock and change the file permissions. Save the new file attributes as unlocked, or change the file back to locked and then save the attributes. If your files are on your local computer, review and modify file permissions as necessary and then submit the files to Hot Folders. Other applications Microsoft Word 2002 To print a document from Microsoft Word 2002, you must install Microsoft Office Service Pack 3. If you do not install Service Pack 3 and you print a job from Word 2002, your job may not print correctly. For example, your job may not print with the correct layout. Help Help files The help files for the Fiery utilities are developed for use with Microsoft Internet Explorer v5.5 and above. If you use other browsers, such as Safari or previous versions of Internet Explorer, the help might not display properly.
Page 12 With Microsoft Internet Explorer on a Windows XP Service Pack 2 computer, the help files might not display or display properly in the following situations: If your browser uses a pop-up blocker, it might block the help files. If this happens, temporarily disable your pop-up blocker to display the help file. If your browser has the advanced Internet option enabled to display notifications about script errors, it might display a warning window before displaying a help file page. To avoid the warning window, clear the Display a notification about every script error option on the Advanced tab in the Internet Options dialog box. A warning message might also appear in the Status bar, but the content of the help file is not affected by this error. Printer driver help files Using the F1 key or clicking the question mark button does not open the help files. You must click the Help button in the printer driver to access the help. Printing Groups The Printing Groups feature is not supported, although it is described in Command WorkStation, Windows Edition Help. Printing Groups has been replaced by User Authentication. For information about User Authentication, see Configuration and Setup and Print Options.
