Setup for LAUSDnet - Windows 95/98/ME Revised 8/1/2001 Dial Up Networking Setup The following assumes that the Dial-Up Networking portions of Windows 95/98/ME have already been installed. If they have not, please refer to your Windows 95/98/ME Installation Manual for instructions on how to install Dial up Networking. Also, you may have a different version of Windows 95/98/ME, or may have purchased Microsoft Plus. Some of these versions of Windows have an Internet Wizard designed to help you configure Dial-up Networking. Just apply the information below in the appropriate places during the "wizard" installation process. You will do this procedure only once to set up the TCPIP software. 1. Double-click on "My Computer" icon 2. Double click on the "Dial-Up Networking" folder 3. Double click on "Make A New Connection" 4. For the name, type LAUSDnet 5. Click on "Next" 6. Enter the area code and LAUSDnet phone number for your local area Click here for access numbers (your will be prompted for your LAUSDnet login name and password) Check with the telephone company or the white pages of your phone book for the number that is local to you. Note: The numbers are designed to provide local dial-up access from all LAUSD school sites. There are no other dial-up numbers for areas outside the District. 7. Click on "Next" 8. Click on "Finish" 9. With the RIGHT mouse button, click ONLY ONCE on the "LAUSDnet" icon that you just created and select Properties" from the pop-up menu. 10. Click on the "Server Type" tab, or button (Windows 95/98) or "Networking" tab (Windows ME) 11. In the box "Type of Dial-Up Server" select "PPP..." 12. Deselect (click to make the check marks disappear) any items in the next 3 (or 5) boxes of the Advanced Options group 13. In the Allowed Protocols group, make sure that "TCP/IP" is the ONLY one selected. Click on any other items with a check to make the check disappear. 14. Click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button 15. Select (a black dot is present next to) "Server Assigned IP Address" 16. Select "Specify Name Server Address"

17. In the text entry box Primary DNS type 192.215.166.34 18. In the text entry box Secondary DNS type 192.215.166.9 19. Deselect (no check mark) "Use IP header compression" 20. Select (check mark is present) "Use Default Gateway" 21. Click on "Ok" 22. Click on either the "General" tab or "Ok" to get back to the General tab 23. Click on the "Configure" button 24. Click on the "Options" tab 25. Select "Display Modem Status" 26. Deselect all other items on this tab 27. Click "Ok" twice to save the settings and exit LAUSDnet properties Call Waiting If the phone line that the computer uses has the call waiting service, do the following steps to disable (cancel) call waiting so that if someone calls while the computer is connected to LAUSDnet, you will not be disconnected (and the caller will usually hear a busy signal). Skip this section if the phone line used by the computer does not have call waiting. 1. Open the Dial-up Networking folder (Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications/DialUpNetworking) 2. Double-click on the "LAUSDnet" icon you created 3. Click on "Dial Properties" 4. Select (click to place a check next to) "This location has call waiting" 5. Click on the triangle next to the box on the right and select or type your code to disable call waiting. Note: Check with your local telephone company for the correct code to disable (cancel) call waiting. Some local telephone companies (such as GTE), require an additional monthly fee for the "cancel call waiting" service. Type a comma after the code for a pause in dialing after the code. Example: *70, is usually the correct code for Pacific Bell customers 6. Click "Ok" Create a "Shortcut to LAUSDnet" icon on the desktop (Optional) 1. Open the Dial Up Networking folder (Start/Programs/Accessories/[Communications in Win 98] Dial Up Networking 2. If necessary, adjust the size of the Dial Up Networking window so that the LAUSDnet icon is visible in the window, and also so that the Dial Up Networking window does not fill the entire screen, so that some of the desktop is visible. 3. Type your user name (LAUSDnet login name, using lower case letters) and password. 3. Click on "Connect" 4. Once you get the message "Connected at " and a timer starts counting, you can start any other internet program, such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Note: The connection message may not be displayed in some cases, to see it you may have to double-click on the glowing icon (with 2 small computers) in the right side of the taskbar. Note: you will not be able to view any web pages other than LAUSDnet's until you enter the proxy settings in your web browser. See the section following with the heading "Instructions for using SOCKS with your Web browser". 7. Remember to click on the "Disconnect" button (on the "Connected at..." window) when you are finished, to hang up the phone line. For connection problems, please first consult the Troubleshooting Guide near the end of these instructions and then call the LAUSDnet helpdesk at (213) 633-1620. If your computer does not already have a WWW browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer you may download Netscape Navigator Gold version 3.01 directly from the LAUSDnet server. You must have already changed your temporary password to be able to do this download. If you have never changed your temporary password, follow these instructions to establish a telnet session and change it. If you do not need to download a browser, you may skip these instructions. If your computer already has a higher version of Netscape, DO NOT download version 3.01. 1. Establish a connection to LAUSDnet as described above 2. Click on the "Start" button 3. Click on "Run"

4. In the box that appears, type: telnet lausd.k12.ca.us 5. You will be prompted to login. Type your LAUSDnet login name and press Enter 6. You will be prompted for your password. If the download has started successfully, you will see: "Opening Data Connection " 11. The download will take approximately 30 to 60 minutes. When the download has completed successfully you will see the message: "5,964,800 bytes received". You can monitor the progress of the download by double clicking on the icon for your connection in the task bar (usually an icon with 2 small computers or the modem icon with red and green blinking lights) and watching the number for "bytes received". If the download stops or is interrupted before completing, you must start over again at step 1. 12. To close the ftp window when the download has ended, type: by and press Enter. 13. On the desktop there will be a new icon named g32e301p. Double-click on it and follow the directions for installing Netscape Navigator Gold. Often Dial-up Networking may have not been installed properly or components may have been deleted. The following will help you verify that all the necessary network components for a proper Internet connection have been installed. If it is necessary to make any changes in the Network settings or components, you will often need to have the Windows 95/98/ME CD or disks. Checking for required network components 1. Click on the "Start" button 2. Click on "Settings" 3. Click on "Control Panel" 4. Double-click on the "Network" icon 5. Confirm that the following components are installed? Client for Microsoft Networks? Dial-Up Adapter? TCP/IP (or TCP/IP Dial Up Adapter) If any of these components is not installed, see below for instructions for adding them If the Client for Microsoft Networks is not installed Assuming you have completed "Checking for necessary network components" above, 1. Click on "Add" 2. Click on "Client" 3. Click on "Add" (there may be a pause to build a driver information database) 4. Select "Microsoft" from the list of manufacturers on the left 5. Select "Client for Microsoft Networks" on the right 6. Click "Ok" 7. Verify that Client for Microsoft Networks has been added to the list 8. Also, make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks is selected for the Primary Network Logon. Click in the Primary Network Logon box to select it if necessary. 9. If you need to install additional components, skip to that set of instructions now 10. If no more components need to be added, click OK. 11.You may see a message telling you that names need to be entered on the Identification tab Click on the Identification tab and unless you are networking computers together with cabling, you may enter anything you please for the computer name, workgroup name and computer description. "Default" and blank entries are not permissable. 12. You may see a message saying "Copying Files..." OR... there may be a message requesting that you insert the Windows 95/98/ME CD ROM or diskettes. If that happens, insert the CD in the CD drive and Click OK If successful, there will be a message saying "Copying Files..." 13. When the files have finished being copied, you will see a message asking to restart the computer. Click on "Yes" to restart your computer

If the Dial-Up Adapter is not installed Assuming you have completed "Checking for necessary network components" above, 1. Click on "Add" 2. Click on "Adapter" 3. Click on "Add" (there may be a pause to build a driver information database) 4. Select "Microsoft" from the list of manufacturers on the left 5. Select "Dial-Up Adapter" on the right 6. Click "Ok" 7. When the files have finished being copied, you will see a message asking to restart the computer. Click on "Yes" to restart your computer In many cases, if you are having difficulty connecting, you can remove these components, restart your computer, and reinstall them. Sometimes files get corrupted or deleted and impede a stable internet connection.

Duplicate occurences of TCP/IP Duplicate identical occurrences of TCP/IP in the Network configuration can also cause the connection to LAUSDnet to not function. Verify that "TCP/IP" (or "TCP/IP Dial- Up Adapter") appears ONLY ONCE on the list of installed network components above. Other components with similar but not identical names (such as TCP/IP AOL Adapter or TCP/IP Dial Up Adapter 2 -VPN..." are different components and not identical to these. If TCP/IP or TCP/IP Dial Up Adapter appears more than once with the identical name on the list of network components: 1. Click once to highlight the second identical occurrence of TCP/IP or TCP/IP Dial Up Adapter 2. Click on the "Remove" button below the list 3. If no more changes need to be made, click "Ok". You may see a message saying "Copying Files..." or there may be a message requesting that you insert the Windows 95/98/ME CD ROM (or diskettes). If that happens, insert the CD in the CD drive (or specified diskette in the drive) and Click "Ok". If successful, there will be a message saying "Copying Files..." 4. When the files have finished being copied, you will see a message asking to restart the computer. Click on "Yes" to restart your computer. Checking/correcting TCP/IP Properties Settings Incorrect options in the properties for TCP/IP can also cause the connection not to work. To check the options: 1. Double-click on TCP/IP (or TCP/IP Dial Up Adapter) 2. If a window appears saying "You have asked to change..." click "Ok". 3. On the IP Address tab which usually appears first, "Obtain an IP address automatically" must be selected. 4. Click on "WINS Configuration" tab. "Disable WINS Resolution", should be selected. 5. Click on the Gateway tab. There should be no numbers entered in the "Installed Gateways" box. If there are any, click on the numbers and then click on the "Remove" button. 6. Click on the "DNS Configuration" tab. "Disable DNS" must be selected. 7. Click on the "Bindings" tab. Client for Microsoft Networks must appear on the list and have a check mark next to it. If it does not appear, see the section above for adding it. If it does not have a check mark to the left of it, click to add a check mark to the left of it. 8. Click "Ok" at the bottom to exit TCP/IP Properties. 9. You may see a message saying "Copying Files..." or there may be a message requesting that you insert the Windows 95/ 98/ME CD ROM (or diskettes). If that happens, insert the CD in the CD drive (or specified diskette in the drive) and Click "Ok". If successful, there will be a message saying "Copying Files..." 10. When the files have finished being copied, you will see a message asking to restart

the computer. Click on "Yes" to restart your computer Other causes of connection problems with Windows95/98/ME (only) If the America Online (AOL) version 5 software has been installed in the computer (whether used or not), it will not be possible to browse web pages using another internet service provider, such as LAUSDnet.
