3 Before you begin: Thank you for choosing Neighborhood HiSpeed. We have set up your HiSpeed service on the phone number identified in your Neighborhood Welcome kit. Please make sure that it is installed on the telephone number that you intended. If there is an error, please call customer service immediately. If you have more than one line, please make sure you set-up your DSL modem to the correct line indicated in your Neighborhood Welcome kit.

4 For Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP SIDDQNH1 STEP 1 A. Make sure your PC is equipped with an Ethernet Network card. An Ethernet network card is required to connect your DSL modem to your computer. B. Verify that the following items came with your Neighborhood HiSpeed installation kit: A. DSL Modem B. DSL Cable (WHITE) C. Ethernet Cable (BLUE) D. Modem Power Cord (GREEN) E. External DSL Filter (3 pieces) F. External Wall-mount Filter G. Installation software disk (For Windows users only) Note to Windows 98 and higher users: Insert the installation software in your CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions for easier installation. The software will automatically check for connections and configuration information and make any necessary adjustments. Macintosh users will need to follow these printed instructions.

5 STEP 2 Installing Line Filters A filter needs to be placed between the wall jack and any phone device associated with your HiSpeed line. Phone devices include phones, answering machines, caller-id boxes, and fax machines. A filter allows you to properly make and receive phone calls without interference from your HiSpeed connection. If you have a security system that is monitored by your security company on the same line as your HiSpeed connection, you will need to contact your alarm company for the specific filter which may need to be purchased. If you do not intend to connect a phone device to the same jack that your DSL modem is connected to, you will not need a filter on this jack. To install Line Filters (There should be 3 of these in your kit) A. Unplug the phone cord from the phone jack. B. Plug the filter into the phone jack. C. Plug the phone cord into the filter. Wall-mount Filter If you use a wall-mount phone: (There should be 1 of these in your kit) A. Remove the phone and disconnect the phone cord. B. Connect the wall-mount filter to the wall plate. C. Plug the phone cord into the wall-mount filter to reconnect the phone. Once you have placed filters on all of the phone jacks associated with your HiSpeed service please move on to step 3. NOTE: If you have more phone devices than filters, you can purchase more filters from any electronics store. You will need to unplug any phone device until you can install a filter between it and the wall jack in order to not cause interference with your HiSpeed service.

6 STEP 3 Connecting the Modem A. Connect one end of the (WHITE) DSL cable to the DSL modem s LINE port and the other end to the phone jack. B. Connect one end of the (BLUE) Ethernet cable to the DSL modem s ETHERNET port and the other end to the PC s Ethernet port. The Ethernet port is wider than the standard port. C. Plug the (GREEN) power supply adapter into the DSL modem s DC IN Port and the other end to your electrical outlet. Turn on the power switch. NOTE: For your convenience, the DSL modem incorporates a built in internal phone filter. You may plug your phone directly into the Phone port of the DSL modem. To use a single wall jack for both the modem and a phone, plug the modem directly into the wall jack, and then plug the phone into the modem. Do not place a filter between the modem cord and the wall jack as this will prevent your HiSpeed service from working.

7 STEP 4 Check your PC s Settings PC Configuration In order to complete the set up of your DSL modem, your PC must be configured to obtain an IP address. Follow the procedures below for your specific computer operating system. Insert the Neighborhood HiSpeed Installation CD-ROM disk into your CD-ROM drive. It should start automatically. If it does not start within a few moments, 1. Click Start on your taskbar 2. Select Run 3. Type D:\SETUP 4. Press OK Follow the instructions on the screen If you are a Mac user or prefer instructions, please follow the instructions below. Windows, 98, 98SE, or Me. Please refer to the back of the guide for help configuring operating systems other than Windows, 98, 98SE, Me 1. Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop. 2. Select Properties from the menu. 3. Select the Configuration tab. 4. Identify the TCP/IP -> network card entry. If this entry is not present, ensure both your network adapter and the TCP/IP protocol are installed properly. 5. Highlight the TCP/IP -> network card entry. 6. Click the Properties button.

8 STEP 5 Confirm your Connection to the Internet You can confirm your HiSpeed connection through a visual inspection of the indicator lights located on the front of your modem. When you are successfully connected to the Internet, the POWER, ACT, SYNC, and PPP indicators should be solid green. The LAN indicator will stay solid after you have connected the Ethernet cable from the modem to your PC and there is no Internet traffic passing between your modem and PC. When there is traffic (e.g you enter an Internet address and press the Enter key), the LAN indicator will blink rapidly. What do solid and blinking lights mean? The POWER indicator will become solid after you connect the modem to a power outlet and turn the modem on. The ACT indicator will become solid after your modem has successfully performed a Power On Self Test (POST). You should wait at least 30 seconds for the indicator to become solid green. If the ACT indicator continues to flash, the modem has failed POST. Turn the modem off and on again to restart. The TX/RX indicator will flash when there is traffic (Internet activity) to and from the Internet to your PC. The SYNC indicator will flash while the modem attempts to detect a HiSpeed signal from MCI. Once the signal has been detected and a connection established, it will become solid. You should wait approximately 60 seconds for the indicator to become solid. The LAN indicator will turn green after you connect your Ethernet cable from the modem to your PC. The indicator will remain solid when there is no Internet traffic between the modem and your PC. When there is traffic, the indicator will blink rapidly. The PPP indicator will become solid after your connection has been authenticated by MCI. You should wait approximately 60 seconds for the indicator to become solid.

9 STEP 6 Congratulations! Open your browser You should now be connected to the Internet. Open your internet browser (i.e. Internet Explorer or Netscape) and surf the Internet. STEP 7 Troubleshooting The front of your modem has four indicators Power, LAN, SYNC and Tx/Rx with corresponding lights. The following chart is a guide of what the lights indicate. Find the scenario that matches the lights on your modem. Ensure that both ends of the blue Ethernet cable are securely connected to the modem and your computer s Ethernet connection. Ensure that both ends of the white DSL cable are securely connected with one end plugged into the port labeled LINE on the modem and one end plugged into the wall jack. Verify that all other jacks that share your DSL telephone line have filters. Open a web browser in order to generate transmissions between your computer and the modem. Other Troubleshooting Tips: 1. In order to install your Neighborhood HiSpeed, your computer must have a functional 10BaseT/100BaseT Ethernet Card. More recent computers come with this card already installed. If your computer does not have one, you can buy an Ethernet Card at any electronics store. 2. Neighborhood HiSpeed requires either Windows 98 or above or Macintosh OS 10.1 or above for installation. 3. Your DSL modem needs to be installed on the phone number that was indicated in your Neighborhood Welcome kit. 4. Remember, a filter needs to be placed in every phone jack with a phone device that is associated with your HiSpeed Internet line. 5. Your HiSpeed service is working properly if 3 green lights on your modem are solid and the other is blinking green. If this is the case and you still cannot reach the internet, then you may have a hardware problem. Please contact your hardware provider for service. If your modem lights are red or not appearing at all, please contact Customer Service.

Hard Drive 70MB of available hard drive space (129MB required for DSL with AOL). Web Browser Microsoft IE or Netscape Navigator + (Microsoft IE required for DSL w/aol). Client For DSL w/out AOL: Outlook Express, Netscape Communicator or Eudora. Hardware Installed CD-Rom drive. Network Connection Installed, functional 10BaseT or better interface. Display & Screen Resolution VGA, SVGA or better display. Windows XP Processor Pentium Class Processor 233 MHz or higher. RAM 128MB (megabytes) of RAM minimum (128MB required for DSL w/aol). Hard Drive 70MB of available hard drive space (128MB required for DSL with AOL). Web Browser Microsoft IE 6.0 required. Client For DSL w/out AOL: Outlook Express, Netscape Communicator or Eudora. Hardware Installed CD-ROM drive. Network Connection -Installed, functional 10BaseT or better Ethernet interface. Display & Screen Resolution VGA, SVGA or better display. Macintosh Processor Power PC or faster processor (MAC OF v.10.1 and higher, open Transport 2.0 enabled). RAM 128MB (megabytes) of RAM. Hard Drive 75MB of available hard drive space. Web Browser Microsoft IE or Netscape Navigator Client For DSL w/out AOL: Outlook Express, Netscape Communicator or Eudora. Hardware Installed CD-ROM drive. Network Connection Installed, functional 10BaseT or better Ethernet interface.

11 Additional Operating System TCP/IP Configuration Instructions: Windows NT To configure your computer for TCP/IP in Windows NT: 1. Click the Start button, choose Settings, and click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Network icon. 3. Click on the Protocols tabs. 4. Select TCP/IP Protocol and click the Properties button. 5. Select the Network Adapter you will use. 6. Click the IP Address tab. 7. Select the radio button labeled Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server. 8. Click the DNS tab. 9. If there are any DNS entries in the Domain Service Search Order window, highlight them and click remove. 10. If there are any entries in the Domain Suffix Search Order window, highlight them and click remove. 11. Click the OK button to close the TCP/IP Properties window. 12. Click OK again to close the Network window. 13. If prompted to restart your computer, click the Yes button. Windows 2000/XP To configure your computer for TCP/IP in Windows NT: 1. Right click on the My Network Places icon and select Properties. A Network Connections box will appear. 2. Right click on the Local Connection you will use and select Properties. A Local Area Connection Properties box will appear. 3. Underneath the Configure button it states: For Windows XP This connection uses the following items, and for Windows 2000 Components checked are used by this connection. 4. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list and click Properties. 5. Select the radio button labeled Obtain an IP address automatically. 6. Select the radio button labeled Obtain DNS server automatically. 7. Click the OK button to close the TCP/IP Properties window. 8. Click OK again to finish. 9. If prompted to restart your computer, click the Yes button. 12 Mac OS To configure your network preferences for DHCP in Mac OS version 8-9.x: 1. Click the Apple menu, select Control Panels, and select TCP/IP. 2. In the TCP/IP Window, choose Using Ethernet from the Connect Via drop down list. 3 In the TCP/IP Window, choose Using DHCP Server from the Configure drop down list. 4. From the File Menu, choose Quit. 5. In the message box, select Save. To configure your network preferences for DHCP in Mac OS version 10.x: 1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. Click the Network icon. 2 Click the arrow box on the Location pop-up list and choose New Location. 3. In the Name your new location field, type DSL. Click the OK button. 4. Click the arrow box on the Show pop-up list and choose Built-in Ethernet. 5. Click the arrow box on the Configure pop-up list and choose Using DHCP. 6. Click the Apply Now button.
