The itunes Store, originally the itunes Music Store, is a softwarebased online digital media store operated by Apple Inc. It opened on April 28, 2003, and has been the largest music vendor in the United States since April 2008, and the largest music vendor in the world since February 2010.

I began using itunes when I purchased an ipod in 2003.
Slide 3 What is itunes? itunes has everything you need to be entertained whenever you want, wherever you are. With itunes, you can: 1. Organize and play your music and video 2. Find music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, free podcasts, and more in the itunes Store 3. Set up your ipod, iphone, or ipad, and add music, video, and more to it
Slide 4 What Does itunes Do? itunes Music Player Music Library App Store iphone/ipad/ipod Backup itunes for Windows doesn t have a very good reputation but there isn t much else that does much better. I have heard that itunes on the Mac is much, much better. Before the iphone there was the ipod which was a music player and itunes was absolutely required to get content onto it. We could buy music, burn our CDs to the ipod, purchase audible books or listen to Podcasts which are like recorded radio shows.
Slide 5 Do We Really Need itunes? No, not really. But. Critical items like buying or getting apps, music, movies, TV shows, etc. can be done via Wifi with the Apps Store on the device. Backing up the device can be done via icloud using wifi too. However, if you choose not to use icloud, backing must be done via itunes with the backup going to your computer. Recent advancements in connecting Apples devices like the iphone and ipad and even the ipod, the significance of itunes has dwindled.
Slide 6 My ipad and My Music Collection Here is an example of my ipad and my music collection. My ipad is shown at the left. New ipad-jeff Having my music collection organized via itunes is much better than having a shelf full of CDs. Yes, it s a little more geeky to see my collection sorted by Title, Album, Genre, or a ranking of 1 to 5 Stars that I rank myself. I can even see how many times I ve played a song and see a ranking of my collection based on the number of times I ve played the songs. I can even choose my favorite songs, regardless of album, and burn them to a CD or flash drive. I did this for my wife s car. Notice the Cogs at the left. These are called smart playlists. A collection of songs based or criteria that I select. For instance, I can have a collection of only Country songs and just play them. Or I have a collection of Sounds Tracks from a variety of musicals so I can just listen to them.
Slide 7 Things My ipad Contains My ipad has more than Apps and Music. I have books, Podcasts and Photos. No movies or TV shows though but many people put movies on their ipads before they go on vacation and use the ipad for entertainment.
Slide 8 But What Can I Do? Synchronize and Backup the Device to your Computer. Restore the Backup to a New Device.
Slide 9 See a Summary of Your Device Your device s serial number can be found in itunes as well as Settings on your device. You can perform an operating system update while connected to itunes. You can also do this via wifi. You can backup your device while connected to itunes and the backup is stored on your computer. You can also backup to icloud via wifi.

Slide 11 Name or Rename Your Device Click Here. The name, New ipad- Jeff, will highlight and you can type a new name.
Slide 12 Backing Up with icloud It is NOT a requirement that you use itunes to backup your device. This is a pretty recent change with the advancement of icloud. I personally backed up to icloud just this week. Once you setup your device to backup to icloud, backup up to your computer stops and is no longer necessary. I personally like this as I don t have to worry about the back up. In fact, I can do a full restore in an Apple Store if I purchase a new device. Just sign in on the device and go to icloud from Settings and Choose Restore. It took about 45 minutes to back up my ipad for the first time. There was 27 gb out of 32 gb worth of data.
Slide 13 So You Want to Install itunes Install itunes for your computer Go to www.apple.com/itunes Download and Install Login using your Apple ID and password Connect your device via the provided USB cable Show Menu Bar. Ctrl - B Authorize your computer to your account Store > Authorize this computer There are a few steps to get itunes up and running and to connect your device to it. Don t worry, you will only have to do this once.
Slide 14 You Will Notice What is On Your Device Photos Apps Books Documents and Data Other Other storage simply includes everything that doesn t fit into itunes pre-existing categories. This includes each app s downloaded data, your Safari browser cache, the Mail app s cache, downloaded emails and attachments, pages for Safari s reading list, notes, voice memos, backup files, and possibly even files left over from jailbreaking your device. Slide 15 Your Apple Account Information You can edit all of these things from this screen within itunes. Changing your Apple ID is done from the internet but you can click the blue link next to the Apple ID above. A credit card needs to be on file if you want to download apps or music to your device. You can do this from your device via the App Store app but you can also do it from itunes.
Slide 16 Demonstration Connect Use Control-B to show the menu bar. Backup and Synch by right-clicking on the device name at the left. Show what is on the device. Music and books. Perform a Synch and Backup Describe what a Playlist is and how it is created. A Playlist is a customized collection of songs from my music library.
