1 Tutorial for loading music files into an Ipad 1. For this example we ll use Adobe Acrobat Reader as the application (app) that we ll use to file and store our music on our Ipad. There are other music applications that you can use on your Ipad, such as On Song or Four Square that are more powerful and let you do things like set up a set list, but Adobe Reader is a good basic file system and best of all, it s free. 2. If you haven t already done so, you ll need to set up an Apple ID Account as follows: (please note that Apple will ask for Credit Card info but you will not be charged for Adobe Reader. They keep your card on file for music or other applications purchases that have fees) a. From the Home Screen, tap Settings > itunes & App Store. b. Tap Create New Apple ID. If an Apple ID is already signed in and you want to create a new Apple ID to use in the itunes and App Store, you'll have to go to the Apple ID website to create a new Apple ID. c. Choose the country for the Store that will match the billing address for your payment method, then tap Next. d. Read the Terms and Conditions and Apple Privacy Policy, then tap Agree. e. Complete the form to create your new Apple ID, then tap Next. The address you provide will be your new Apple ID. The form also includes security questions for your protection, and asks for an optional rescue address. We recommend providing a rescue address. f. If you're trying to create an account using an existing Apple ID, like your icloud address, you'll receive a prompt telling you that your address is already an Apple ID. Simply tap Continue, and then tap Use Existing Account on the following screen. g. Enter your credit card and billing information, then tap Done. h. Verify your address. Check your for a verification from Apple and follow the steps to verify your address. Learn what to do if you need to set up on your iphone, ipad, or ipod touch. 3. Once you ve got an Apple ID, The first thing you ll want to do is download the Adobe Acrobat Reader onto your Ipad. Do this by pushing the App Store button on your Ipad. It looks like this: a. b. Once the Application Page opens, look for the search symbol which looks like a magnifying glass similar to this: c. Either push on this symbol or in the box next to it (depending on your version) then type in Adobe Acrobat Reader without quotes. d. Several different readers will now show up that you can get or purchase. Push Get for the Adobe Acrobat Reader, and it will download to your Ipad.

2 4. Once it s downloaded you ll see the Adobe Icon on your home screen similar to this: which indicates you now have the Adobe Reader app on your Ipad. 5. Set aside your Ipad for now, and we ll now describe how to download the songs from Ukulele friends onto your Desk or Laptop computer. So now move to the computer you typically use to access the Ukulele Friends Meet-up site. 6. The following directions are for Windows XP, but will be similar for most Windows based computers and not too different for Apple as well. The objective here is to create a file folder on your hard drive named Ukulele Friends Songs. a. At your computer, open My Computer and then click on your primary hard drive (typically C:). b. Go to the top left and under the word File, go to New, then Folder. c. Click Folder and then Type in the title of the folder as Ukulele Friends Songs (or a different title for the folder is you prefer). d. This will be the location you want to save or print all the songs from our Ukulele Friends page to. 7. Now open the Ukulele Friends Meet-up page, and navigate to the More, then Files page where all the songs are stored. 8. Click on whichever song you d like to start with, and it will open the song. 9. In the top right hand corner you ll see a download arrow that looks like this: 10. If you don t see that grey bar, with the symbols in the right corner, move your mouse arrow up to the top of the page and it should appear. 11. Click on the arrow and a Save As window should open. Navigate to the new folder we created in step six named Ukulele Friends Music and save the music file into that folder. 12. Now here s the tedious part. You ll need to save each of the songs into your Ukulele Friends Songs folder. So sit back with your favorite beverage and save

3 away, taking comfort in knowing that in the future it ll only be two or three songs to save every other week. 13. Once you ve got all the songs downloaded, check to make sure that you ve got itunes installed on your computer. Apple computers should already have it installed, and you ve probably already installed it if you ve got an Iphone or Ipad. If not you can download it for free by searching for itunes and downloading it. Just check to make sure you re downloading the correct version for the type of operating system you re running (Windows XP, 7, 8 or 10 etc ). 14. Plug in your Ipad to your computer with the USB chord. 15. The itunes software should automatically open once your computer recognizes your Ipad, but if not you can open it manually as well by double clicking on the itunes icon: 16. Once open look for your Ipad on the itunes screen. It should look like this: 17. Click on the symbol of your Ipad (in the red circle above) on the itunes screen. It will open a new screen that looks like this:

5 18. Click on the word Apps on the screen (in the red circle above). It will open a new screen that looks like this: 19. Using your mouse scroll down the page until you can see the File Sharing Apps, this should include Adobe Reader as shown inside the red circle above. Click on the Adobe Reader App (in the red circle). When you do you ll see that the box to the right of the File Sharing Apps will now say Adobe Reader Documents but the box will be empty.

6 20. Leave the Itunes App page above open, with the Adobe Reader App clicked. You ll now open the file where all your songs are stored in the Ukulele Friends Songs file. Go to My Computer and navigate to that file folder (see step six). The screen should look something like this: You can see the file folder open in the lower left where my music is stored called Ukulele Music as well as the Adobe Reader button highlighted in blue in itunes. You can also see that I have Adobe Reader Documents already loaded, but at this point yours will still be empty. 21. Now the fun part. You can individually select a song by clicking and holding down the left mouse button and dragging it into the box under the words Adobe Reader Documents and releasing the left button. This will copy that song onto your Ipad. 22. Alternately, you can hold down the shift button, click on the top song in your Ukulele Friends Songs file, and while still holding down the shift button scroll down to the last song in your file, and click that one. This should highlight all your songs. Then drag all the songs at once into the box under the words Adobe Reader Documents and release the left button. This will copy all the songs onto your Ipad. 23. Lastly open Adobe Reader by touching the icon on your Ipad. On the left side of the screen you ll see a listing of words arranged in a vertical column, starting with Recent and followed by Documents, Acrobat.com ect Tap the word Documents and an alphabetical listing of all our songs should appear to the right side of the screen. You can touch any song in the list and it will open. Note that the Recent button will only start to show songs once you ve opened

7 one, but it s a handy feature when you re practicing a song list for an upcoming meetup. 24. That should be about it. Once you are up and running you ll find this all goes pretty quickly after you ve done it a few times. There will likely be some differences in computer operating systems, especially with Apple computers, but the basic framework should be similar.
