Beyond support of hardware upgrades and redundancy of critical hardware components, the Cisco MDS 9513 software architecture is designed to offer high levels of availability, enabling ease of consolidation, and efficient business continuance solutions. The Cisco MDS 9500 Supervisor-2 Module can automatically restart failed processes, making it exceptionally robust. In the event that a supervisor module is reset, complete synchronization between the active and standby supervisor modules supports stateful failover while avoiding disruption to traffic. The Cisco MDS 9513 chassis includes 1+1 redundant crossbar modules. Each crossbar module providing the necessary bandwidth to deliver full system performance, so that loss or removal of a single crossbar module can have no impact on system performance. Cisco MDS 9500 Series directors are designed to deliver high system performance, even in the event of a crossbar failure. High availability is supported at the fabric level via the robust and high-performance ISLs. PortChannel capability allows users to aggregate up to 16 physical links into one logical bundle. The bundle can consist of any port in the chassis, helping the bundle remain active in the event of a port, ASIC, or module failure. The bundle can help sustain the failure of any physical link without causing a reset. Additionally, Fabric Shortest Path First (FSPF) multipathing provides the intelligence to load balance across up to 16 equal cost paths and, in the event of a switch failure, to dynamically reroute traffic. Scalable expansion with maximum investment protection Leveraging Cisco MDS 9500 Series modules, the Cisco MDS 9513 supports from 12 to 528 1-, 2-, and 4-Gbps auto-sensing Fibre Channel ports, from 4 to 44 10-Gbps Fibre Channel ports and from 8 to 60 1-Gbps Ethernet ports (user configurable for iscsi and/or FCIP) in a 13-slot modular chassis. With 2.4 Tbps of internal switching capacity, Cisco MDS 9513 Multilayer Director also supports link speeds up to 10 Gbps and 96 Gbps of front panel bandwidth per slot, and is ready for future speed enhancements as they become available. Virtual SANs (VSANs) Well-suited SAN consolidation, VSANs allow more efficient storage network utilization by creating hardware-based isolated environments within a single physical SAN fabric or switch. Each VSAN can be zoned as a typical SAN and maintains its own fabric services for added scalability and resilience. VSANs allow the cost of SAN infrastructure to be shared among more users, while allowing absolute segregation of traffic and retaining independent control of configuration on a VSAN-by-VSAN basis. Any port can be added to any VSAN, providing the flexibility necessary to help address the most challenging data center provisioning scenarios. Integrated SAN Routing Another step toward deploying more efficient, cost-effective, consolidated storage networks the Cisco MDS 9513 Multilayer Director supports Inter-VSAN Routing (IVR). IVR allows selective transfer of data traffic between specific initiators and targets on different VSANs while maintaining isolation of control traffic within each VSAN. With IVR, data can transit VSAN boundaries while maintaining control plane isolation, thereby maintaining fabric stability and availability. Integrated IVR helps eliminate the need for external routing appliances, greatly increasing routing scalability while helping to deliver line-rate routing performance, simplifying management and eliminating challenges associated with maintaining separate components. Integrated IVR means lower total cost of SAN ownership. Multiprotocol intelligence for investment protection The Cisco MDS 9513 Multilayer Directors architecture enables Multilayer/Multiprotocol functionality, allowing the Cisco MDS 9500 Series to integrate multiple transport protocols for increased flexibility. Beginning with Fibre Channel, FICON, iscsi, and FCIP, the Cisco MDS 9500 Series is a robust multiprotocol platform designed for deployment of cost-optimized storage networks. Today, users can implement up to 10-Gbps Fibre Channel or FICON for high-performance applications, iscsi over Ethernet for cost-effective connectivity to shared storage pools, and FCIP for long-distance connectivity between data centers. Designed to support future storage protocols, users can migrate to new technologies while retaining a consistent set of features, services, and management tools. Open platform for network-hosted storage applications The Cisco MDS 9000 platform provides a platform that can help deliver the intelligence and advanced features required to make multilayer intelligent SANs a reality, including hardware-enabled innovations for data migration, data replication, and more. Hosting these applications in the network dramatically improves scalability, availability, and manageability of storage networks. Integrated mainframe support Cisco MDS 9500 Series Multilayer Directors are mainframe ready with support for IBM System z 1-, 2-, and 4-Gbps FICON and Linux environments. Qualified by IBM for attachment to all FICON-enabled devices in a System z operating environment, Cisco MDS 9500 Series Multilayer Directors support transport of the FICON protocol in both cascaded and non-cascaded fabrics, as well as intermix of FICON and Open Systems FCP traffic AG06-0306 -2-

on the same switch. VSANs can help simplify intermix of SAN resources between z/os, mainframe Linux, and open systems environments supporting increased SAN utilization and simplified SAN management. Advanced traffic management for high-performance, resilient fabrics Advanced traffic management capabilities integrated into Cisco MDS 9513 Multilayer Director can simplify deployment and optimization of large-scale fabrics. Virtual Output Queuing helps maintain line-rate performance on each port, independent of traffic pattern, by eliminating head-of-line blocking. Up to 5,000 buffer-to-buffer credits can be assigned to an individual port for optimal bandwidth utilization across distance. PortChannels allow users to aggregate up to 16 physical ISLs into a single logical bundle, providing optimized bandwidth utilization across all links. The bundle can consist of any port from any module in the chassis, help bundles remain active even in the event of a module failure. FSPF-based multipathing provides the intelligence to load balance across up to 16 equal cost paths and, in the event of a switch failure, dynamically reroute traffic. Quality of Service parameters can be used to manage bandwidth and control latency to prioritize critical traffic. Fibre Channel Congestion Control (FCC), an end-to-end feedback-based, congestion-control mechanism, augments the Fibre Channel s buffer-to-buffer credit mechanism to provide enhanced traffic management. Cisco MDS 9513 Multilayer Director, resold by IBM as the 2062-E11, offers the following features: (#2412) 12-Port 1/2/4-Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module: For the most demanding storage networking environments, the Cisco MDS 9000 Family 12-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel is designed to deliver uncompromising performance. 4-Gbps ports deliver up to 96 Gbps of full-duplex bandwidth making the Cisco 12-port Fibre Channel a great choice for attachment of the highest performance 4-Gbps-enabled storage subsystems and for ISL connections between switches. http://www.ibm.com/storage/cisco Support for some configurations may not be available on the initial planned availability date. Software requirements: For a complete list of software requirements, cross product requirements, prerequisites, and (or) product dependencies, http://www.cisco.com/go/ibm/storage Compatibility: For a list of currently supported devices, http://www.ibm.com/storage/cisco Limitations: There are configuration limitations when using Generation 1 line cards in a Cisco MDS 9513 Director. The Cisco MDS 9500 Supervisor-2 Module is designed to provide support for up to 528 Fibre Channel ports in a single Cisco MDS 9513 director chassis. The Supervisor-2 Module supports a mixture of Generation 2 (Gen-2) 4- and 10-Gbps Fibre Channel Switching line cards and Generation 1 (Gen-1) IP Services, Storage Services and 2-Gbps Fibre Channel Switching line cards, which helps provide director-investment protection. However, when Gen-1 line cards (#2116, #2132, #2208, #2214, #2400) are used with Gen-2 line cards (#2404, #2412, #2424, #2448), the maximum number of addressable connections is limited to 252. For example, if a Gen-1 Storage Services Module with 32 Fibre Channel ports is installed, only nine Gen-2 24-port Fibre Channel Modules with 216 ports may also be installed. In this Gen-1 and Gen-2 line card example, only 10 of the 11 9513 director feature slots and only 248 of potential 528 Fibre Channel ports may configured. Port index availability: The Cisco MDS 9500 Multilayer Directors are designed to operate with any combination of Cisco MDS 9000 modules. However, you should be aware of the maximum port availability your chassis can support. A port index is an internally assigned number that Cisco SAN-OS uses to switch data packets within the director or fabric switch. When the maximum number of port indexes is reached in a chassis, any modules remaining or added to the chassis will not boot up. The number of physical ports on a Fibre Channel module is equal to its port index. However, for Gigabit Ethernet modules (IPS-8, IPS-4, and MPS-14/2), one physical port is equal to four port indexes (virtual ports). The Gigabit Ethernet modules use one port for iscsi and the remaining three ports for FC IP tunnels. Table 1 lists the physical ports and port indexes (virtual ports) available per Cisco MDS 9000 module. Table 1: Port Port index availability module Physical ports (virtual ports) indexes needed 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 48 48 24-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 24 24 12-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 12 12 4-port 10-Gbps Fibre Channel 4 4 16-port 2-Gbps Fibre Channel 16 16 Module 32-port 2-Gbps Fibre Channel 32 32 Module 8-port Gigabit Ethernet IP Storage 8 32 Services Module 4-port Gigabit Ethernet IP Storage 4 16 Services Module 32-port 2-Gbps Fibre Channel Storage 32 32 Services Module 14-port FC, 2-port Gigabit Ethernet 16(1) 22 Multiprotocol Services (MPS-14/2) Module 1 14 Fibre Channel ports and two Gigabit Ethernet ports Using any combination of modules that include a Generation 1 module limits the port index availability to 252 on the Cisco MDS 9513 and Cisco MDS 9509 Directors. Generation 1 modules use contiguous port indexes where the system assigns a block of port index numbers contiguously starting from slot 1. Table 2 shows a valid sample configuration for maximum capacity within the port index limits. The table lists a mixture of Generation 1 and Generation 2 modules on a Cisco MDS 9509 Director. Table 2: Maximum chassis configuration on a Cisco MDS 9509 Director (valid) Slot Modules in Cisco Physical Port number MDS 9509 Director Generation ports indexes 1 12-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 12 12 2 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 48 48 3 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 48 48 4 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 48 48 5 Supervisor-1 1 6 Supervisor-1 1 7 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 48 48 8 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 48 48 9 (empty) Totals 252 252 Table 3 shows a sample configuration that exceeds the port-index limit. The table lists a mixture of Generation 1 storage IPS modules and Generation 2 modules on a Cisco MDS 9509 Director. In this example, one of the modules installed will not boot up because the number of port indexes needed has been exceeded. Table 3: Maximum Chassis Configuration on a Cisco MDS 9509 Director (Exceeded) Slot Modules in Cisco Physical Port number MDS 9509 Director Generation ports indexes 1 14-port FC, 2-port Gigabit 1 14 22 Ethernet Multiprotocol Services (MPS 14/2) 2 8-port Gigabit Ethernet IP 1 8 32 Storage Services Module 3 4-port Gigabit Ethernet IP 1 4 16 Storage Services Module 4 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 48 48 5 Supervisor-1 1 6 Supervisor-1 1 7 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 48 48 8 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 48 48 9 48-port 4-Gbps Fibre Channel 2 48 48 Totals 218 262 Using any combination of only Generation 2 modules allows a maximum of 528 port indexes on a Cisco MDS 9513 Director. Generation 2 modules do not need contiguous port indexes. Generation 2 modules will use the available ports in the slot that it is installed and then borrow available ports from the supervisors. It will then restart at slot 1 of the chassis until it has the number of port indexes necessary. AG06-0306 -2-
