Learning Outcomes: By end of the training session, participants should be able to: 1. Be familiar with the Virtual Learning Environment 2. Content Folder, Module Page, Blank Page d. Mashups (YouTube, SlidShare and Flickr) 3. Identify and incorporate essential tools that encourage collaboration among all participants a. Announcement, Discussion Board PART 1 Get started: Introduction to Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment 1.1 Login Page Navigate Blackboard URL of SEGi: https://segi2u.blackboard.com/ Type your Username. Type your Password. Passwords are case sensitive. Click Login. Please change your password the first time you log in to Blackboard. Go to the Global Navigation Menu on the top right corner of the page, click on the drop down button, select Settings > Personal Information > Change Password OR On My Institution page, go to Tools Menu, click on the Personal Information > Change Password 3

1.2 My Institution Tab (1st Screen after Login) A The Global Navigation Menu that is available everywhere in Blackboard and a Logout button. B A Tools Menu C Modules: Information from all the courses you are enrolled in or are teaching. D Add Module: Available modules, such as dictionary, report card, and notes, you can choose the most significant. E Personalize Page: Change the colour scheme of the page. To edit information, click the Manage icon located at the top of each module. You can reorder the modules on a tab using the drag-and-drop function or the keyboard accessible reordering tool. 4

1.3 Notifications Dashboard Display the Community engagement, notifications for all courses are compiled and appear on the Notifications Dashboard. Users can add more modules. Users can also drag the module to different columns to organise it. Needs Attention: Display student submissions that need grading such as assignments, tests, surveys, blog and discussion board posts, and journal entries. Alerts: Displays past due and Retention Center alerts for all courses. What's New: Display new tests and assignments submission, new discussion board posts, blog entries, journal entries, and course messages. To Do: Displays the status (Past Due/Due) of relevant course work. 5

1.4 Courses Tab Contains a list of the courses you are enrolled in or are teaching. Course Search: You can search for a course and preview it. Course List: From the list, you can access any course you are enrolled in or teaching. Course Catalog: You can search the catalog for courses or organizations of Faculties and Schools. 1.5 Community Tab A list of SEGi organizations of Faculties and Schools. 6

1.6 Content Collection Tab Course Files is the file repository available with all courses. You can store and find content in personal, course, and institution folders in the Content Collection. You can store files you upload to your course in the Content Collection and link to them again. 7

1.7 Service Tab It is used to provide links by SEGi University. PART 2 Content Management 2.1 Create a Banner with PowerPoint Launch the PowerPoint application Go to Design tab, click on the Slide Size icon on the right side of top bar and select Custom Size from the drop down menu. In the Slides Sized for, select Banner from the dropdown menu and click OK. Choose Maximise. Insert intended images and texts. Go to File > Save as png/ jpeg/ gif You can locate the banner in the presentation folder. 8

2.2 Upload A Course Banner A recommended size for banners is approximately 480 by 80 pixels. The banner image is automatically centered. The image is stored there with each new upload. If you delete the image from the course entry page, the image file remains in the course storage repository in the main folder. Go to Course Management in the Sidebar, expand Customization and click on Teaching Style. Scroll to the bottom of the page, click on Browse My Computer button to locate your banner and click Submit. 9

2.3 Add Course Content 2.3.1 Create an Item On Information page, you may introduce the course and provide some general information. STEP 1 Click on Information in the sidebar STEP 2 Click Build Content on the action bar. Select Learning Module from the drop down list. 1. Type your name for the item, eg. General Information/ Study Guide/ COPPA Course Outline and etc. 2. You can select a colour for the name of the item. 3. Insert Your Contents 4. You may attach relevant document 5. Make sure you tick on Permit Users to View this Content 6. Make sure you tick on Track Number of Views 7. You may select Date and Time Restriction if necessary otherwise you may leave it empty. 8. Click on Submit button. 10

2.3.2 Create a Learning Module STEP 1 Click on Content in the sidebar STEP 2 Click Build Content on the action bar. Select Item from the drop down list. 1. Type your name for the Learning Module, eg. Week 01 Lesson 2. You can select a colour for the name of the Learning Module. 3. Insert Your Description 4. Tick on No for Enforce Sequential Viewing of the Learning Module 5. Tick on No for Opening in New Window 6. Make sure you tick on Permit Users to View this Content 7. Make sure you tick on Track Number of Views 8. You may select Date and Time Restriction if necessary otherwise you may leave it empty. 9. Tick on Yes for Show Table of Contents to Users 10. You may choose any Hierarchy Display 11. Click on Submit button. It is more organise if you can create one Learning Module for each lesson/class, in other words you may have 14 Learning Modules in a long semester. 11

2.3.3 Upload a File in a Learning Module STEP 1 On your content page, click on any of your Learning Module that you have created, eg. Week 01 Lesson STEP 2 Click Build Content on the action bar. Select File from the drop down list. 1. Type your name for the File 2. You can select a colour for the name of the Learning Module. 3. Browse you computer to locate the document 4. Tick on No for Opening in New Window 5. Tick on No for Add alignment to content 6. Make sure you tick on Permit Users to View this Content 7. Make sure you tick on Track Number of Views 8. You may select Date and Time Restriction if necessary otherwise you may leave it empty. 9. Click on Submit button. 12

2.3.4 Using Mashup: Flickr 1. Referring to part 2.3.1 Create an Item 2. You may edit the item by clicking on the drop down button next to the item name 3. In the text body, you may locate Mashups> Flickr 4. You may type the keywords to search related Flickr image, click on Go button and select from the search result list. 5. Enter the Name of the image and leave default settings for the rest and click Submit button. 13

2.3.5 Using Mashup: Embed SlideShare Presentation 1. Referring to part 2.3.1 Create an Item 2. You may edit the item by clicking on the drop down button next to the item name 3. In the text body, you may locate Mashups> SlideShare Presentation 6. You may type the keywords to search related SlideShare resources, click on Go button and select from the search result list. 7. Enter the Name of the image 8. In View option, choose Embed Presentation and leave default settings for the rest and click Submit button. 14

2.3.6 Using Mashup: Embed YouTube Video 1. Referring to part 2.3.1 Create an Item 2. You may edit the item by clicking on the drop down button next to the item name 3. Visit the Youtube Link that you intended to embed into Blackboard, 4. Click on the Share button and click on the Embed button to reveal the iframe HTML code. 5. Right Click the code and choose Copy 6. Select the HTML in the editing toolbox 7. A HTML window pops up, paste the code at the very last row. 8. Click Submit button. 15

2.4 Create an Announcement Click on Tools in the sidebar and Locate Announcements on the page. OR you may expand Control Panel, and expand Course Tools in the sidebar to locate Announcements tool. 10. On the Announcements page, click Create Announcement on the action bar. 11. On the Create Announcement page, type a Subject. 12. Type your message. 13. In the Web Announcements Options section, click: Not Date Restricted to keep the announcement visible until you remove it. -OR- Date Restricted to limit the announcement's visibility by date and time. 14. Select the Display After and Display Until check boxes to enable the date and time selections. 15. Select the Email Announcement check box to send students an email containing the announcement. 16. Optionally, in the Course Link section, click Browse to link to a course area, tool, or item. 17. Click Submit. 16

2.5 Create a Discussion Board You may access the discussion board in sidebar OR Access the discussion board in Control Panel>Course Tools> Discussion Board A discussion board forum is an area where participants discuss a topic or a group of related topics. 1. Access the discussion board and click Create Forum on the action bar. 2. On the Create Forum page, type a name and optional instructions or a description. 3. In the Forum Availability section, click Yes. You can create forums ahead of time and set the availability to No until the discussion is ready to start. 4. Select the Display After and Display Until check boxes to enable the date and time selections. 5. Select the Forum Settings based on your specific needs; you may also leave it with default settings. 17

PART 3 Extra 3.1 Add Module Page If you have accidentally deleted your Homepage, Oops Doesn t Matter, there s a way to restore it. Click on the Course Tab, goto the + to add a module page. STEP 2 Click on Add Course Module button STEP 3 Click on My Blackboard STEP 1 Give it a name, for example New Home Make sure to tick Make available to Users 18

Make sure you click on the Add button for the modules of Alerts, My Announcements, My Tasks, Need Attention, Report Card and What s New. 19

3.2 Add an Avatar Image You can upload an avatar that is used to represent you throughout the system. Users can upload a photo or other image they have created to use as an avatar. The recommended pixel size for an avatar image is 150 by 150. Use the following steps to add your avatar image: 1. From the global navigation menu, click Settings, and then click Personal Information. You can also access Personal Information on the Tools panel. 2. On the Personal Information page, click Personalize My Settings. 3. On the Personalize My Settings page, you can add or change your personal avatar. Click Use custom avatar image. You will not see this option if your institution has turned on the profiles feature. 4. Click Browse My Computer. 5. Select the avatar image file and click Open. 6. Click Submit. 20

3.3 Reduce File Sizes Capacity for each course: 50 MB Reduce File Sizes before uploading, reduce file sizes for: Microsoft Office Files Reduce file size for Powerpoint and Word files. Goto File > Reduced File size and select Best For sending in email. PDF File- Goto File > Save As > Reduced Size PDF Image Optimisation Use a graphics program to resize images for screen viewing before uploading.
