Introduction This booklet provides an overview of Glow Web Hosting and its potential use in learning and teaching. There are instructions on setting up Glow Web Hosting and exploring its functionality for the purposes of this pilot. Glow is web-based and can be used wherever users have access to an internet connection. During the pilot you will be able to access Glow from both school and home. Each Glow user has their own unique username and password which gives access to information and resources appropriate to the user s role; thus, a pupil s access to Glow will differ from staff users. Author: Glow Team Page 3 of 24 Ref: GC060

What is the Glow Web Hosting service? The Glow Web Hosting service allows a Glow user to own, add content to and publish a web site. A web site is a group of related web pages published on the world wide web or within an intranet such as Glow. The various pages of a web site are interconnected using hyperlinks which, when clicked, will navigate the user to another area of the web site. Most web sites have a home page as their starting point. The right to use the Glow Web Hosting service has to be granted to a user by an administrator of Glow. This duty will usually fall to a local authority administrator but could be delegated to the school or establishment administrator of Glow. Why use the Glow Web Hosting service? Schools that do not already have a web presence could take advantage of the Glow service in order to publish their school web site for the world to see. Users can make various types of content visible to a much larger audience. For example, work could be shared across schools within Glow without the need to invite Glow users into a group, good practice could be highlighted to the wider internet community, school events could be publicised to the local community. The service could also provide Glow users with an additional area for distributing files if their portal space allocations have been used up. For example, a Glow user could create a basic web site for the purpose of storing files for upload and download. Author: Glow Team Page 4 of 24 Ref: GC060

The flexibility of publishing web pages could allow for more creativity in the presentation of information. Pupils who have the knowledge to create web pages could be allowed to present their work in this format rather than using more traditional methods. Author: Glow Team Page 5 of 24 Ref: GC060
