CLCC Cnference 2014 Intrductin t CT ECO Use f GIS & GPS in Trail and Land Management Explre CT ECO CT ECO is a partnership between the CT Department f Energy and Envirnmental Prtectin (CT DEEP) and the University f Cnnecticut Center fr Land Use Educatin and Research (UCnn CLEAR). It is a website with the gal f sharing Cnnecticut s envirnmental and natural resurce infrmatin with the general public. CT ECO s missin is t encurage, supprt, and prmte infrmed land use and develpment decisins in Cnnecticut. Map Catalg The Map Catalg is a cllectin f pdf maps prduced by CT DEEP. Mst maps are created fr twns, but a few are available by quad r fr the whle state. All f the maps include explanatin, a legend, scale bars, data surces and mre. - G t http://ctec.ucnn.edu - Frm the Maps heading, click n Map Catalg. - Chse yur Twn in the drp-dwn menu. - Click n and explre several f the pdf maps available fr yur twn. Thematic Map Viewers These are the easiest viewers t use n CT ECO. At this time, there are tw thematic viewers the Simple Map Viewer and the Aerial Pht Viewer. Mre thematic viewers are in the wrks. - Frm the Maps heading, click n Thematic Map Viewers. - Click n the Simple Map Viewer GO buttn. This will pen the Simple Map Viewer in a new tab. - Ntice sme simple map tls alng the tp include pan (the hand), zm in, zm ut, zm t full extent f CT, etc. Alng the left side, there are categries and themes. - Under Chse a Map Theme n the left side f the screen, lcate the Prtected Open Space Mapping Prject layer and click n the rund buttn next t the layer. Then click the Refresh Map buttn at the bttm f the layer list. - Nthing happened! That s because yu aren t zmed in enugh. The Theme Visible Bar (shwn belw) is critical. Yu can nly see that map when the square is aligned with the gray r blue rectangles f the Theme Visible Bar. Zm in (click that tp upward pinting arrw) until this is the case. 1
CLCC Cnference 2014 Intrductin t CT ECO - Explre the Simple Map Viewer. Sme things t try: Mve arund the map t different places. Zm in and zm ut. Change the base map t an aerial image. Explre the different map themes. The Aerial Imagery Viewer is similar t the Simple Map Viewer except that it is laded with, yu guessed it, aerial imagery! - G back t the hme page f http://ctec.ucnn.edu and find the Aerial Imagery Viewer. - Ntice the same tls as the Simple Map Viewer alng the tp. - The left side is a lng list f imagery datasets available fr Cnnecticut. Click n the buttn next t ne and then hit Refresh Map. - Explre the Aerial Imagery Viewer. Sme things t try: Mve arund the map t different places. Zm in and Zm ut. Hide the Base Map. Explre different imagery datasets including: true clr, infrared and black and white, different years and different seasns (leaf ff vs leaf n). 2
Data and Resurce Guides CLCC Cnference 2014 Intrductin t CT ECO CT ECO cntains a wealth f infrmatin abut the maps in the frm f Resurce Guides and Data Guides. A Resurce Guide is a cmprehensive explanatin f the natural resurce itself. The Data Guides are slightly mre data-fcused, but bth are written t be understandable (brilliant idea!). - G back t the CT ECO hme page http://ctec.ucnn.edu. - Frm the Guides drpdwn menu, click n the Resurce Guides link. Explre a cuple f Resurce Guides t see what they cntain. - Try visiting the Data Guides link. Explre a cuple f Data Guides t see what they cntain. Advanced Map Viewers The Advanced Map Viewers cntain mre ptins and tls than the Thematic Map Viewers. Currently there are tw Advanced Viewers the riginal Advanced Map Viewer and the Cnnecticut Castal Hazards Viewer. These will be upgraded t a different frmat in the future. - G back t the CT ECO hme page http://ctec.ucnn.edu. - Frm the Maps drpdwn menu click n Advanced Map Viewers and then click the GO buttn. The Advanced Map Viewer cntains GIS tls alng the tp right, lcatin tls alng the tp left and a very lng list f Map Cntents alng the left. Layers are turned n and ff with check bxes. There are tw imprtant (and kind f tricky) cncepts in the Advanced Map Viewer when it cmes t turning n and ff layers. 1. Many layers are Scale Dependent. This means they wn t draw unless yu are zmed in far enugh. A layer is grayed ut if yu are nt zmed in enugh fr it t draw. After zming in t its scale, the same layer name will change s that it is black and yu are able t check it n. 2. Layers are in Grups. Bth the Grup AND Layer must be checked n fr the layer t draw. - Zm in t yur twn f interest. - In the Map Cntents Windw, check ON the Habitat Grup the Natural Diversity Database Areas Layer the Critical Habitats Layer - Click n the Critical Habitat Cmmunities Heading t expand it and shw three data layers Critical Habitat Labels, Critical Habitat Units and Critical Habitat Cmmunities. Ntice that each f these can be check n and ff. 3
CLCC Cnference 2014 Intrductin t CT ECO Click n the Critical Habitat Cmmunities t expand the legend. Click n it again t clse the legend - In the Map Cntents Windw, check ON the Sils Grup the Inland Wetland Sils Layer the Water Resurce Management Grup the Aquifer Prtectin Area Layer the Open Space Grup the DEP Prperty layer the Prtected Open Space Mapping Prject Layer the Imagery and Tp Grup turn n Hillshade 2000 Yu have nw created a map cntaining a number f layers that are useful and relative t land management. In the Advanced Viewer, yu have the pprtunity t cmbine layers that are apprpriate t yur applicatin. Map Services Map Services are a means f accessing GIS data ver the Internet in the frm f a dynamic map. This is an advanced sectin f the CT ECO website meant fr GIS sftware users interested in using map services frm CT ECO with their wn GIS sftware and data. Hwever, the intrductin f ArcGIS nline t the GIS scene has created new utility fr map services. As yu have heard, ArcGIS Online is a way t make maps using an interface prvided by Esri. ArcGIS Online is designed t cnnect t map services as a way t add data t yur maps. - Visit the Map Services page n CT ECO t see a lng list f available map series and the data layers they cntain. Yu may want t use these in the ArcGIS Online exercise next. 4
CLCC Cnference 2014 Intrductin t CT ECO Appendix: Hw t Create a Screen Sht Windws 7 and Vista Windws 7 and Windws Vista bth have a nifty new Snipping Tl. Then hit the space bar nce it will turn t a camera icn. This allws yu t capture any pened windws, regardless f active r hiding behind. If yu want yur screen capture t be kept in clipbard s yu can paste them in image editing tls (eg. Phtshp) instead f utput as.png, just include Cntrl while using the shrtcut. - Cntrl + Cmmand + Shift + 3 Captures entire screen, hld image in clipbard. - Cntrl + Cmmand + Shift + 4 Captures screen accrding t user selectin, hld image in clipbard. 5
