CHAPTER 1 Introduction This manual covers the LAN MODEM Terminal Server. The LAN MODEM terminal server enables software applications designed to communicate using modems, to communicate over a LAN instead. LAN MODEM has a serial port that emulates a Hayes AT modem, and a LAN interface using the TCP/IP protocol. LAN MODEM may be configured either with AT commands to its serial interface, or via its LAN interface by a Web browser or Telnet terminal. Delta Plus LAN modem V1.8 19/09/2005 page 3 of 14

CHAPTER 1 Getting Started 1.1 Using LAN MODEM for the first time Before using LAN MODEM for the first time, it is necessary to configure the IP address as follows: 1. Connect the power supply to the LAN MODEM and switch on. 2. Connect the serial (or COM port) of a PC to the LAN MODEM using a standard modem cable. 3. Configure the terminal package of the PC for 38400bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity. 4. Type AT and enter on the PC, the response OK should appear on the next line when enter is pressed. 5. Configure the IP address. The IP address should be unique on the network to which LAN MODEM will be connected, and is available from the network administrator. Type AT!Iaa.bb.cc.dd enter. (The LAN MODEMs IP address is now aa.bb.cc.dd). To verify that the address has been accepted, type AT*C1 enter to view a configuration report similar to the one below. AT*C1!I IP addr 10.0.0.1!N Netmask 255.255.255.0!G Gateway 0.0.0.0 Subnet 10.0.0.0 Mac addr 11-22-33-44-55-66 OK Local TCP port 2000 Remote TCP port 2000 Idle disconnect time 300 (secs) 6. Now configure the network mask in a similar manner to the IP address. 7. If the LAN MODEM will be initiating calls to a station on another network which is accessible via a router then enter the address of the router using the AT!G command (Gateway), 8. Finally save the settings by typing AT&W and Return. Cycle power to the LAN MODEM by either using ATY and Return or remove Power momentarily. Once done the LAN modem is ready for use. Delta Plus LAN modem V1.8 19/09/2005 page 4 of 14

1.2 Testing LAN operation Connect LAN MODEM to the LAN using a standard CAT5 cable. To verify LAN MODEM is functioning correctly, PING it from a PC on the same LAN and check there is a response. To PING the LAN MODEM from a Windows PC, proceed as follows: Click on start Click on run Type PING aa.bb.cc.dd in the dialogue and click on OK A DOS window similar to the example below should be displayed. C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>ping 10.0.0.1 (Substitute the IP address programmed into the LAN modem.) Pinging 10.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 10.0.0.1: Bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128 Reply from 10.0.0.1: Bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128 Reply from 10.0.0.1: Bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128 1.3 Configuring LAN MODEM LAN MODEM may be configured with AT commands, or via its LAN interface with a Web browser or an interactive Telnet terminal session. Web browser Type the IP address of the LAN MODEM into the address pane of the web browser and press enter. The LAN MODEM home page will be displayed offering the most common configuration options. When LAN MODEMs configuration is changed the new settings can be saved from the load and save settings page. Until the save option is selected, LAN MODEM will continue working with its current settings. N.b. If LAN MODEM is switched off before new settings have been saved, they will be lost. Command port via Interactive Telnet session LAN MODEM has a command line configuration utility that may be accessed using a Telnet terminal such as Telnet (Windows), or Hyperterminal (Select TCP/IP instead of a COM port). To gain access, configure the telnet software to connect to the IP address of the LAN MODEM, choosing port number 23, the standard TELNET port number. A list of commands will be displayed on the screen when you type help. Note that the command interface requires commands to be entered in lower case. A list of supported commands may be found by referring to the appropriate section of this guide. To view the IP address type show lan using lower case characters. Delta Plus LAN modem V1.8 19/09/2005 page 5 of 14

1.4 Trace facility LAN MODEM prints its activities to a log that may be viewed by connecting to port 84 using a telnet terminal program. This facility is generally only required for help in debugging connection issues. The type and severity of events that are reported may be selected using the trace command of the Command port interface (above). Delta Plus LAN modem V1.8 19/09/2005 page 6 of 14

1.5 Making and receiving calls If you have used AT modems, the procedures for making and answering calls with LAN MODEM should be familiar. When dialling, substitute the destination IP address and port number for the phone number. LAN MODEM will communicate with any compatible device supporting TCP/IP over the LAN. This includes another LAN MODEM, terminal servers, or application software running on host computers. To make a call to IP address 10.0.0.2 port 23 <Responses from the LAN MODEM are parenthesised like this> ATD010000000002 P23 (Dial command. Alternative - ATD10.0.0.2 P23) <CONNECT> (Call connected) The remote port number may be omitted, in which case the default port number will be used. The default remote port number is 2000 and can be reconfigured with the command ATS1009=<remote port number>. When an incoming TCP call is detected on port 2000, LAN MODEM will report RING as follows: RING RING RING ATA <CONNECT> (After 2 seconds) (After 2 seconds) (User command to answer the call) (Call connected) To disconnect a call, either: Drop DTR. Typically, selecting hang up in your communications software will drop DTR. Or, type +++ as follows: (Call connected) +++ (User command to enter AT command mode) <OK> (LAN MODEM is still connected but in command mode) ATH (User hang-up command) <NO CARRIER> (Call cleared) Delta Plus LAN modem V1.8 19/09/2005 page 7 of 14

Level 1 only traces system faults, level 5 traces all activity. I Toggle IP tracing T Toggle TCP tracing C Clear screen In addition to the above, trace information may be filtered to display only the required protocols. The command port command trace offers a number of trace filters: all off lan arp tcp ip modem system html udp Eg. To add html to the trace type trace html The severity level can be set from the command port: trace level 1 5 A message may be sent to the trace log from the command port with the command: Trace out hello Delta Plus LAN modem V1.8 19/09/2005 page 12 of 14
