MapInfo v16 So you haven t upgraded to MapInfo 64-bit yet? This document provides a quick overview of the important features and improvements of the current 64-bit release for those customers who have not yet migrated from the 32-bit versions (v12.5 and older). Simple Migration: Perhaps you are concerned that upgrading will break your current environment? We have tried to make the migration as smooth and painless as possible: Existing Workspaces just open them as you did in 32-bit versions Layouts MapInfo will automatically import your existing layouts into the new Layout Designer. There is nothing you have to do. MapBasic scripts in most cases these will continue to work without modification. Some minor edits may be needed in order to optimally integrate them with the new ribbon interface. Still not convinced? Here s what you are missing: We re investing heavily in modernizing MapInfo Pro. We re focused on making it faster, able to handle big data, more extensible and easier than ever to create great looking output. Here are some of the highlights, but you can check on the details on the following pages. Performance and Infrastructure Data, Web Services and Cloud Services (Geocoding) Layout Designer Thematics Web map publishing Usability Improvements across the board These new capabilities are delivered while maintaining backwards compatibility with your existing data and workspaces. You can even continue to run many MapBasic applications without even needing to recompile them!

Performance and Infrastructure Big Data Files > 2gb TAB files can now be larger than 2gb in size. In addition, we ve expanded record and field lengths, along with the number of fields per table. These improvements allow for working with much larger data and reduces the need for seamless tables. We ve also extended large files capability to our standard set of highperformance databases supported. Or try out Geopackage files to use as a personal database. And our new MRR (Multi-Resolution Raster) can exceed even 1tb with excellent performance. Unicode We ve added support for UTF-8 and UTF-16. Tables can now support multiple languages. Multi-language tables will be displayed properly in maps, browsers, the Info Tool, etc..net SDK We ve added a.net SDK so that you can build much more sophisticated addons using the full power of the Windows environment. MapInfo also comes bundled with sample apps to help you get started. Performance Table delete and update operations will be faster in many cases. This is due to using a smarter way of managing indices on TAB files. There is a new preference for controlling this behavior. We massively increased the speed of queries and selections on large datasets. When the number of records gets large (>1 million) the speed increase is in the many orders of magnitude. Background processing capabilities are also available for developing add-ins. You can see this in action using the new MapInfo Advanced Raster module described within this document. MapInfo Advanced Raster Module We introduced a new Raster module which replaces the previous Vertical Mapper product but is so much more. The new multi-resolution raster (MRR) file format can handle huge data sets even beyond 1 terabyte in size with amazingly fast render speeds. The MRR format is very flexible and powerful allowing you to gather data at differing resolutions and still manage to do meaningful analysis with easy rendering, as MapInfo handles all of the complexity for you. All of this can be done as background processing which allows you to use the full capability of MapInfo while doing large raster processing operations. Try a free 30-day trial of MapInfo Advanced which includes the Raster module. This is available by just activating the trial from within MapInfo. There is nothing to download, install or configure.

Data and Web Services WMTS v1.0 Added ability to read tile sets from WMTS v1.0 servers. For specification details see: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/wmts WFS 2.0 Added support for WFS 2.0. Previous versions only supported v1.0 and v1.1. For details see: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/wfs Geopackage Read and Write tables into your own personal geodatabase that is easily shareable with other Pro users and is well supported on mobile platforms. For more details on this OGC standard, read: http://www.geopackage.org/ FME 2016 Upgraded the Universal Data Import to use FME 2016. This includes bug fixes and enhancements. EasyLoader EasyLoader utility with many new improvements including: n 64-bit app using same drivers & connections as 64-bit MapInfo Pro n Selectively Create, Replace or Append individual files in a batch n Display status of each file upload operation n Show progress bar for each file and overall progress n Append multiple tables together Packing Tables Packing Tables - In most cases, tables can now be packed on the fly without disruption to the existing workspace. This is the most highly requested improvement on the PB Ideas Portal. Cloud Geocoding Service With v16, we introduced cloud geocoding services. You can begin geocoding with zero configuration required and you get some free monthly geocoding credits to help you get started immediately. Upgrade your plan easily to get more credits to tackle larger jobs.

Improved Layout Designer We ve concentrated on making the Layout Designer more robust and making it easier to convert your older layouts to the new Layout Designer format. The layout designer was originally created to allow users a way to directly label maps on the layout. With maps now directly embedded in the layout, complex labeling is now much easier, in some cases reducing labeling efforts by 90%. Alignment There are many alignment improvements including better snap behavior and grid cells in paper units. You can now also align multiple objects relative to each other, page margins or guidelines. Scalebar Place a live dynamic Scalebar anywhere on your layout page Map Grid/ Graticule We added dynamic reference grids to maps and layouts that change as the map zoom changes. Just set them up and everything else is automatic. Multipage Layouts Create and manage multi-page layouts and save as a PDF document. Working with multiple pages is very easy using familiar page thumbnails for navigation. Templates You can design templates that can be reused later or used to automatically generate a map series with some simple MapBasic scripting. Clipboard Creating new layout pages is now much easier using standard clipboard commands. You can Copy/Paste any object from one layout page to another. When making presentations, you can easily copy maps and browsers into PowerPoint slides or Word documents. Undo / Redo Familiar multi-step undo/redo for layout operations such as add, delete, move, resize of layout objects (maps, images, text, etc.). If you make a mistake, easily undo with Control+Z or Redo with Control+Y. Symbols Polylines & Polygons We ve restored and enhanced the capabilities to add points, lines and polygons. Using your mouse, you can create complex shapes and regions to draw whatever you d like on the layout. We ve also added some new stock shapes to the gallery. Rotated Text Images & Symbols You can now rotate Text, Images and Symbols to create better effects or adjust images that are not at the desired orientation.

Improved Thematics With version 16, you ll see the first phase of a larger overhaul of the theme capabilities within Pro. These improvements are aimed at improving the quality of output while at the same time making it easier to apply and modify themes. Theme Bin Control In Layer Control Ranged themes are now displayed within the Layer Control. From here, you can selectively turn bins on or off to easily highlight only the data that you wish to draw attention to. Ribbon Controls Theme manipulation can now be done on a new Theme Ribbon. This makes many theme editing tasks much easier and eliminates the need to use the older dialogs in most cases. Color Brewer Color Brewer palettes have been added for Ranged and Individual Value themes. Ranged supports Sequential & Diverging color schemes. Individual supports Qualitative color schemes. See: http://colorbrewer2.org/ Dynamic Themes Change many aspects of a theme on the fly which makes it much easier try different settings until you get just the theme you wanted. For single variable themes, you can now also change the theme field without the need to recreate the theme from scratch.

Other Usability Improvements Window Management & Multi-Monitor Support The 64-bit user interface allows you to work the way you want to work. All windows can be either Floating, Tabbed or Docked anywhere on any monitors that you have attached to your system. Windows can easily be switched between modes as needed. UI Customization Easily customize the user interface with a few mouse clicks. Add what you like to the Quick Access toolbar, create your own groups of commands and even your own whole new ribbon tabs. It is also possible to assign your own shortcut keystrokes to any command in the software. World POI Symbol Set This new symbol set contains 120+ high-quality vector symbols for all major business and point-of-interest classifications worldwide. Use with MapInfo Stacked Styles to create a wide variety of professional looking map markers. Layer Renaming Just right-click and rename any normal or theme layer. This makes it much easier to understand and to make friendlier PDF files. Plus it eliminates the extra step of editing the layer names in Adobe Illustrator. Touch Screen Support On devices equipped with touch screens, you can now use common touch gestures to pan and zoom when interacting with maps. Uploader Try the new Uploader tool to publish web maps to Spectrum Spatial Analyst in most cases with one or two clicks. Also, easily send maps & tables to the Spectrum Spatial server, as well.
