Setup a VSN Survey Style Using Trimble Access (MiFi Card) California Surveying & Drafting Supply Technical Support Services Notes: This tutorial is designed for users with a MiFi Card/VSN Setup. In order to connect to the network, you must have a VSN account with a NTRIP username and password. If you are using a MiFi card, make sure that it is on and charged prior to your setup. Order of Operations: Turn on MiFi card first, then the R8, then the TSC If you have issues with configuring your TSC to connect to the MiFi card, clear out the password in the card and set the connection type to an Open authentication with a disabled Data Encryption (see the middle of page 3) Always charge your equipment (Receiver batteries, TSC, etc.) prior to your survey. You must be outside in an open environment to gain an initialization and satellite acquisition. MiFi Card Setup in the Wireless Manager Start with opening the Settings menu in the Start menu. In the Settings menu, select the Connections tab to configure your connection settings. Select Wireless Manager to edit your Wi-Fi settings and to establish the connection to your Mi-Fi Card. In the Wireless Manager menu: Tap on the Wi-Fi tab to turn on the Wireless Radio in the Trimble Device. The connection status should go from Off to Connecting. To configure the connection between your Mi-Fi Card and your TSC handheld, select the Wi-Fi Settings option, which is located in the Menu tab on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. In the Configure Wireless Networks menu: Your Wi-Fi radio will automatically detect any available networks within vicinity. If you do not see your network, change the Networks to access pull-down menu to All Available. At this point, your Wi-Fi Card should be on. There are two tabs in this menu: the Wireless tab, where you see all of the available networks, and the Network Adapters tab, which configures the connection settings for your radio. Select Network Adapters to continue. In the Configure Network Adapters menu: Change the My network card connect to pulldown menu to The Internet rather than Work. Select ok on the upper right-hand corner of the menu to store the settings and go back to the Wireless Manager menu. Back in the Wireless Manager menu; select Wi-Fi Settings in the Menu tab to get back to the configuration menu. With your stylus, highlight and tap once on the name of the connection you want to set up. Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. In the General tab: Make sure that your Network Name is correct. In the Connects to pull-down menu, select The Internet. Select the Network Key tab In the Network Key tab: The Authentication pull-down menu should be set to Open In the Data Encryption pull-down menu, select WEP so that you can enter a Network Key If you use a network key, uncheck the check box prompting for an automatic key provider and type it in. Back in the configuration menu: With your stylus, press and hold down on the name of your preferred network until you see another window appears displaying the following: Connect and Remove Settings. Press Connect to establish the link. If done correctly, the status will change from Available to Connected. To check the connection, go into the Start menu and select Internet Explorer. Type a web address into the navigation bar and press GO to check if you can browse to a site. Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Bluetooth a GPS Receiver to a TSC Handheld Go to the Connections window. (Start/Settings/Connections Tab) In the Connections tab, select the Bluetooth icon. In the Bluetooth window, Mode tab: Make sure the Turn on Bluetooth box is checked. Leave the Make this device discoverable to other devices box unchecked. If you haven t done so, turn on your GPS receiver. Select the Devices tab to continue. In the Bluetooth window, Devices tab: Select New Partnership in the window. Your Trimble device will now search for the GPS receiver that you will use for the survey. Your GPS receiver will highlight in the next window when the search is complete. If it does not, select Refresh. Select the Next button to continue. Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Not to be copied or distributed without permission. 4

In the next window, you will be prompted to enter a Passkey to enable a secure connection between your TSC handheld and your GPS receiver. This step isn t necessary and should be ignored. Select Next on the bottom right to continue. In the next window, you will be prompted to select a service to use from your GPS receiver. Since we won t be using anything other than the Bluetooth connection, ignore all of the options displayed in the window. Tap Finish on the bottom right to finish the setup. When the setup is completed, you will see your GPS receiver displayed in Bluetooth window. You have now successfully partnered your GPS receiver to your TSC handheld. VSN Setup in the Settings Menu Open Trimble Access in your TSC. In the main window, select Settings. We will break this procedure into two steps: 1.) Selecting the Receiver 2.) Creating the GNSS Contact 3.) Configuring the Survey Style In the Settings window, we will star with the connection settings. Select the Connect option to begin. In the Connect window, we will only deal with two settings: GNSS contacts: With the internet configured, we will create our GNSS connection to the VSN Network. Bluetooth: With the partnership we created between Windows Mobile and our GPS receiver, we will instruct Trimble Access where to receive signal from. Begin by selecting Bluetooth. Bluetooth Configuration in Trimble Access In the Bluetooth window, we will connect our GPS receiver to Trimble Access. Because VSN uses remote bases, we only have to configure the rover. In the Connect to GNSS rover pull-down menu, select the rover that we initially configured. Press Accept to store the changes and exit the screen. GNSS Contact Configuration in Trimble Access with a MiFi Card Back in the Settings screen of Trimble Access, select Connect. In the Connect screen, select GNSS Contacts to begin the setup. In the GNSS contact screen, you will see a window displaying all available contacts. To configure a GNSS contact, start with selecting New on the bottom tab of the screen. Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Not to be copied or distributed without permission. 7

In the GNSS contact edit screen, page 1: Name: Select a name that you can use to easily identify your GNSS connection. Contact Type: Leave to Internet Rover. APN and Modem Pin: Do not enter anything in these menus since we are using a MiFi Card. Select the arrow on the end of the Network connection pull-down menu. In the Network Connection window: With our MiFi Card configured through Windows Mobile, we do not have to configure a separate connection for our GNSS contact; instead, select Auto. Trimble Access will automatically default to our MiFi card as the established network connection. Press Accept to save and store the settings. In the GNSS contact edit screen, page 2: Leave the following checked: Use NTRIP Enter the following information provided to you by your VSN dealer: NTRIP Username Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Not to be copied or distributed without permission. 8

In the GNSS contact edit screen, page 3: Enter the following information provided to you by your VSN dealer: NTRIP password CSDS VSN IP Address: 50.201.146.130 CSDS VSN IP Port 5000 Select Store and Enter to save the changes. Configuring a VSN Survey Style in Trimble Access In the Settings window, we will configure a Survey Style in order for our recently created GNSS contact to connect to when we start the survey. Start with selecting Survey Styles in the Settings screen. In the Survey Styles screen, you will see a window displaying the available surveys that were created. We are going to create a new style that will conform to our GNSS contact. Start by selecting New on the bottom tab of the screen. Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Not to be copied or distributed without permission. 9

In the Style details screen: Style Name: Type in a name that will define the name of new style; this will be what you select when you start your survey. Style Type: Select GNSS. Press Accept to continue. In your VSN Survey Style menu, we need to configure our rover so that it can communicate properly to our TSC in terms of the type of survey we want to do, as well as what GNSS contact it needs to use. Options for the Observed control point, Rapid point, Topo point, and Continuous points can be edited at the user s discretion. Start with selecting the Rover options. In the Rover options window, page 1: Survey Type: Select RTK Broadcast Format: Select VRS (CMR) Store Points as: Select Vectors Elevation and PDOP mask: 10 and 6.0 respectively, as recommended by Trimble. Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Not to be copied or distributed without permission. 10

In the Rover options window, page 2: Antenna Type: Select the proper antenna. If you are a R8 user, make sure you chose the correct type of antenna (R8/5800/SPS88x Internal vs. R8GNSS/SPS78x Internal) Measured to: For ease of use, select Bottom of antenna mount Antenna height: Input the length of the rod being used. Serial number Leave blank In the Rover options window, page 3: Tracking: If you have GNSS capability with your receiver, check the GLONASS box; otherwise, leave this option unchecked. When you start your survey, the Trimble Access will detect whether or not you have GNSS capability in your receiver. If you do not have GNSS capability, Trimble Access will uncheck this option for you. Select Enter to leave this screen. Back in the VSN Survey Style menu; select Rover Radio to edit the settings. Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Not to be copied or distributed without permission. 11

In the Rover Radio Screen: Type: Select Internet Connection; the radio will automatically route through the controller. GNSS Contact: Select the arrow in the window; select the name of your created GNSS contact. Prompt for GNSS contact: Leave blank. Press Accept to go back to the main survey style menu. Back in the main menu, we have selected the necessary settings for our rover. If you want to make edits to your observation times and number of recorded points (Topo, Observed Control, etc.) you may choose to do so at your own discretion. Finish your setup by selecting the Store button on the bottom tab of the screen, then press Esc to exit the menu. Setting up a State Plane Job in a VSN Survey In the main menu of Trimble Access, select General Survey. In the General Survey menu, select the Jobs icon on the upper left, then select New job in the submenu to create a new job. Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Not to be copied or distributed without permission. 12

In the New job menu select the following: Job Name: Enter the name of your job here by using the keypad on the TSC Handheld. Template: Set to Default. Units (Dist.): Select to US survey feet. In the Coordinate System (Coord. sys.) setting; tap on Scale: 1.0000000000 to change the coordinate system. In the Select coordinate system menu, choose Select from library to establish a predefined coordinate system. In our example, we want a state plane coordinate system. Select Next on the bottom right of the screen to continue. In the next window, select your coordinate system: System: Select US State Plane 1983; this is the current system Zone: Choose the zone that pertains to the area where you will be conducting your survey. The Datum will automatically switch to NAD 1983 (Conus) (Mol). Check Use Geoid Model and select GEOID09 (Conus) or GEOID12 (Conus) for newer Data Collectors. Scroll to page 2/2 Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Not to be copied or distributed without permission. 13

In page 2/2, select the following settings: Coordinates: Leave to Grid Project Height: Set the project height here, tap on the arrow and select units. Specify the type of units you will be using for your project. Scroll back to page 1/2 Check over your settings to ensure that everything you set is to your preferences. If satisfied, select Enter, then Store on the bottom right of the screen to go back to the new job menu. Back in the new job menu, check over your settings. If you are satisfied, select Accept on the bottom right to save the settings and create your job. Copyright 2000-2010 California Surveying & Drafting Supply. Not to be copied or distributed without permission. 14

Once your job is created, select Measure to select your Survey Style. Select Measure Points to begin your VSN survey. Wait for the source list to build so that you can select the Mountpoint name. You must be outside and clear of any dense GPS environment (trees canopy, buildings, etc.) in order for the source list to build. In the Mount point window, select CSDS_2007 as the Mountpoint name to initialize the survey. Make sure that your GPS rover assembly is set up so that it can gain a satellite fix and gain initialization. When initialization is gained you may start your VSN survey. This concludes the tutorial.
