2 1. How to Use Your Galaxy Tab as a Mobile Hotspot Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 You can direct the Galaxy Tab to share its digital cellular connection with as many as five other wireless gizmos. This process is referred to as creating a mobile, wireless hotspot. To set up a mobile hotspot with your Galaxy Tab, heed these steps: 1. Turn off the Galaxy Tab s Wi-Fi radio. You can t be using a Wi-Fi connection when you create a Wi-Fi hotspot. Actually, the notion is kind of silly: If the Galaxy Tab can get a Wi-Fi signal, other gizmos can too, so why bother creating a Wi-Fi hotspot in the first place? 2. If you can, plug in the Galaxy Tab. It s okay if you don t find a power outlet, but running a mobile hotspot draws a lot of power. The Tab s battery power drains quickly if you can t plug in. 3. From the Apps screen, open the Settings app. Touch the Apps Menu button to get to the Apps screen. 4. Choose Wireless & Networks. 5. Choose Tethering & Portable Hotspot. The Tethering & Portable Hotspot window appears. 6. Touch the box to place a green check mark by Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot. Yep, that s about all there is to it. When the hotspot is activated, you see the Tethering or Hotspot Active status icon displayed, as shown in the margin. You can continue to use the Galaxy Tab while it s sharing the digital cellular connection, but other devices can now use their Wi-Fi radio to access your Tab s shared connection. To turn off the mobile hotspot, choose the Tethering or Mobile Hotspot Active notification and remove the green check mark by Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot. One of the easiest ways to disable the Wi-Fi radio is to use the Quick Settings. You can change the mobile hotspot configuration by choosing the Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot command in the Tethering & Portable Hotspot window. Use the Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot dialog box to change the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and set security (add a password), if you like. The range for the mobile hotspot is about 30 feet. Some cellular providers may not allow you to create a mobile hotspot, and of course, you cannot create a mobile hotspot when your Galaxy Tab doesn t use the cellular data network. Don t forget to turn off the mobile hotspot when you re done using it. Those data rates can certainly add up!

3 2. How to Turn Your Droid X into a 3G Hotspot Droid X You can configure the Droid X to share its cellular data network connection with as many as eight other devices. Those devices connect wirelessly with your Droid, accessing a shared 3G network just like a laptop computer or other mobile device accesses a Wi-Fi network. 1. Touch the Launcher button on the Home screen. The Applications Tray opens. 2. From the Applications Tray, open the 3G Mobile Hotspot icon. You may see text describing the process. If so, dismiss the text. 3. Touch the 3G Mobile Hotspot check box to place a green check mark. A warning message appears, recommending that you plug your Droid X into a power source because the 3G mobile hotspot feature sucks down a lot of battery juice. 4. Touch the OK button to dismiss the warning. If you've not yet set up a 3G mobile hotspot, you need to supply some information. 5. Input a password for your Droid X hotspot. The password must be applied, and it must be at least eight characters long. Give this password to the people you want to share your cellular network with. 6. Touch the OK or Save button to save your settings and set up the hotspot. When the 3G hotspot is active, a Mobile Hotspot Service status icon appears. You can then access the hotspot using any computer or mobile device that has Wi-Fi capabilities. To turn off the 3G hotspot, open the 3G Mobile Hotspot app and remove the green check mark. Also, keep these points in mind:

4 Whether your Droid X allows for 3G data sharing depends on your cellular carrier. Some carriers may limit that ability, and others may charge extra. You cannot activate 3G network sharing and use a Wi-Fi connection at the same time on the Droid X. To change the hotspot settings, press the Menu soft button when using the 3G Mobile Hotspot app. (You have to stop the service first.) Choose Advanced and then choose Wifi AP Mode. You can change the device name, security, password, and channel. Touch the Save button to confirm the new settings. 3. Using the Mobile Hotspot feature in BlackBerry OS 7.1 BlackBerry OS 7.1 adds the ability to use your Smartphone as a wifi hotspot on supported devices, enabling you to share your BlackBerry's high-speed cellular connection to the Internet from up to 5 other wifi-capable devices, such as your laptop or tablet. The feature is enabled within the Manage Connections window (scroll up to the status bar and press the navigation button):

5 The first time you enable the feature, you will be prompted to enter a key to secure the wifi connection (the key that connecting client devices will need to enter to connect to the BlackBerry): Once the key has been entered, select OK. Your connection is now available to use. To further configure the hotspot, browse to Options --> Networks and Connections and select Mobile Hotspot Connections. You will be warned that using the hotspot feature may result in additional data charges.

8 You can optionally specify whether devices connected to the BlackBerry should be able to "see" each other, using your BlackBerry device as a switch. And you can optionally specify a timeout period after which the hotspot feature will disable itself: Pressing the menu button and selecting Diagnostics will display IP information about the hotspot wireless network:

How to Share Your Connection with ipad Personal Hotspot The personal hotspot is a third-generation ipad feature that lets ipads with Wi-Fi + 4G share their cellular highspeed data connection with other devices including notebook computers, ipod touches, and other ipads. To enable your personal hotspot and share your cellular data connection with others: 1. Tap Settings on your Home screen. 2. Tap Personal Hotspot (or General Network Personal Hotspot). 3. Tap the Personal Hotspot switch to enable it. 4. Tap Wi-Fi Password to create or change the password for the Wi-Fi network you create. Now, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB-enabled devices can join your hotspot network and share your ipad s cellular data connection. Your personal hotspot network adopts your ipad s name, which is Bob L s ipad 64 (3d-gen) in the following figure.
