About this guide Who should read this guide How this guide is organized This guide describes how to install the base operating system environment on the Microsoft Windows AnyPlace Kiosk. From this point on, the kiosk will be referred to as IBM AnyPlace Kiosk. This guide is intended for anyone who installs the operating system for the IBM AnyPlace Kiosk. This guide is organized as follows: v Chapter 1, Installing Microsoft Windows XP, on page 1 describes the Windows XP installation procedures. v Chapter 2, Installing Microsoft Windows Vista, on page 3 describes the instructions for installing Windows Vista. v Chapter 3, Installing the drivers, on page 5 describes the drivers required for your installation. v Chapter 4, Troubleshooting, on page 7 describes possible causes of the most common issues encountered during installation. Chapter 1. Installing Microsoft Windows XP Requirements The Microsoft Windows XP installation process fully supports the IBM AnyPlace Kiosk. Follow the instructions on this page to install Microsoft Windows XP. The following components are required for the installation: v Windows XP CD-ROM v USB Keyboard and Mouse v External USB CD-ROM Drive Updating BIOS 1. Obtain the latest BIOS update for the IBM AnyPlace Kiosk from the IBM Retail Store Solutions support page, www.ibm.com/solutions/retail/store/support/. 2. Use your preferred method for updating the BIOS. 3. After updating the BIOS, choose Load Optimized Defaults in BIOS setup. Configuring BIOS setup To configure BIOS setup, complete the following steps: 1. Power on the system and enter BIOS setup by pressing the DEL key during POST. 2. Enter the Advanced BIOS Features menu. 3. Under the Boot Device selections, make the following changes: v First Boot Device: CD-ROM v Second Boot Device: Hard disk drive Installing the operating system Follow these steps to install the operating system: 1. Insert the Windows XP Professional CD-ROM in to the drive and power on the system. 2. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation. 3. Chapter 2. Installing Microsoft Windows Vista Requirements The Microsoft Windows Vista installation process fully supports the IBM AnyPlace Kiosk. Follow these procedures to install the operating system. The following components are required to complete the installation: v Windows Vista DVD-ROM v USB Keyboard and Mouse v External USB DVD-ROM Drive Updating BIOS 1. Obtain the latest BIOS update for the IBM AnyPlace Kiosk from the IBM Retail Store Solutions support page, www.ibm.com/solutions/retail/store/support/. 2. Use your preferred method for updating the BIOS. 3. After updating the BIOS, choose Load Optimized Defaults in BIOS setup. Configuring BIOS setup To configure BIOS setup, complete the following steps: 1. Power on the system and enter BIOS setup by pressing the <DEL> key or tapping the touch screen twice during POST. 2. Chapter 3. Installing the drivers The IBM AnyPlace Kiosk contains many components that require specialized drivers to function properly. Install the required drivers in the order shown for your IBM AnyPlace model number. Note: You must reboot the system between each driver installation. You can always find the latest supported drivers for the IBM AnyPlace Kiosk at the IBM Retail Store Solutions support site, www.ibm.com/solutions/retail/store/support. This is the only supported source of drivers for the IBM AnyPlace Kiosk. IBM AnyPlace 5xx, 7xx, and 9xx Models required drivers v VIA 4-in-1 Driver v Wired Ethernet Driver v Video Driver v Touch Screen Driver v Audio Driver v Wireless Ethernet Driver v Windows Operating System Patches Visit the Microsoft Windows Update support site for the latest patches at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ Attention: Failing to install all of the required drivers might have an adverse impact on the stability and performance of the system. Chapter 4. Troubleshooting The table below lists some of the most common issues you might encounter during the installation of Microsoft Windows XP. Follow all directions in this guide to avoid any unnecessary problems. Symptom Resolution Error: No Operating System Found v Ensure that Windows setup has run. v Make sure the partition where Windows is installing is set to active. v Check the BIOS setup boot device list. Touch screen not working. v Plug in USB mouse. v Allow system to detect mouse. v Reboot your system.
