Upgrading LVDS Cables Instruction Sheet INTRODUCTION Use the following instructions to replace the LVDS cables in CP2000-M/MR projectors. The new cables are slightly longer in length and allow for better routing of the cables between the light engine and cardcage. The entire procedure requires the removal of the light engine to access the existing LVDS connections to the DMDs, replacing all LVDS cables (001-100673-xx), installing a strain relief clamp, and routing new LVDS harnesses correctly between the light engine and cardcage. The entire procedure can take up to 1.5 hours to complete. NOTE: Units manufactured early July 2009 have a strain relief clamp installed, however the clamp does not have the necessary gasketing in place. These units must complete the following procedure to replace the LVDS cables and to replace the existing clamp. KITS REQUIRED 003-002142-02 LVDS Service Kit (includes 6 LVDS cables (001-100673-07), 2-piece clamp with gaskets, 2 cable ties) TOOLS REQUIRED Phillips screwdriver #1, #2 Allen keys 2mm, 3mm Electrostatic protective strap and pad Disposable Nitrile gloves Upgrading LVDS Cables Instruction Sheet 1 of 10
SAFETY WARNINGS AND GUIDELINES Always power down and disengage ALL power sources from the projector before servicing. UV HAZARD: When servicing the projector with the top lid removed anyone within the immediate vicinity must wear safety glasses with side shields. Once the projector is powered down, allow the cooling fans to automatically turn OFF before disconnecting from AC and opening the projector. This takes approximately 15 minutes. technicians. This replacement procedure should be performed by qualified service Observe all electrostatic precautions. Use a grounded wrist strap when handling electronic assemblies. light engine. Gloves must be worn when handling critical optical components, such as the INSTRUCTIONS Please read all instructions before you begin. 1. 7. Remove the six screws securing a small plate over the LVDS cables. Remove the plate. (Figure 4) Figure 4 8. Using the cardcage handles, pull the cardcage out a few centimeters. This will give you enough access to the LVDS connections to the FFIB. Disconnect all harness connections to the FFIB by pulling the harnesses straight out. Do not shift the connector side-to-side when removing otherwise you could damage the pins. 9. Remove the light engine. This must be done to access the LVDS connections to the Red DMD. If you don t do this you run the risk of damaging the PCB connectors and LVDS harnesses. a. Using a #2 Phillips, remove the eight screws around the light engine cover and a flat head screwdriver to loosen the single captive screw located on the cardcage side. b. Remove shutter assembly. Using a 2mm Allen key remove the two hex screws securing the light dump. Cut the cable tie to free the shutter harness. Remove the two screws securing the shutter assembly (Figure 5). Figure 5 c. Remove the three hex screws (3mm) securing the light engine to the Illumination Optic System (IOS). d. Cut the tie wraps on the harnesses. e. Disconnect the three DMD temperature harnesses and the lamp exhaust harness. 4 of 10 Upgrading LVDS Cables Instruction Sheet
f. Using a light engine handle (011-102490-02), carefully lift the light engine out of the projector with the hoses and harnesses attached. Rest the light engine on its metal guard portion. 10. Disconnect LVDS Red, Green and Blue from the light engine. IMPORTANT: Some projectors are manufactured with PCBs that have an LVDS brace attached. When disconnecting LVDS harnesses in these units, do the following: a. Spread the retention clips of the connector holder outward using your thumb and index finger. (Figure 6) CAUTION! Not spreading the retention clips increases the likeliness that the pins of the PCB connector will be bent or damaged. Figure 6 b. Grasp the harness near the connector. Pull the harness out by applying a force straight upward. DO NOT shift harness from side-to-side while pulling upwards. (Figure 7) Figure 7 Upgrading LVDS Cables Instruction Sheet 5 of 10
11. Connect the new LVDS cables to the light engine. Each new LVDS cable has a ground that must be connected to the DMD stud (socket head screw). The ground connection should be at the top. The correct order of connections to the DMD stud is as follows: heatsink (bottom), thermal sensor, P-clip, ground (Figure 8). Figure 8 NOTICE! When installing LVDS cables, it is essential they are connected properly to avoid damaging the pins on the 30-pin connector ends. The cables must be inserted straight into the connectors and not on an angle. Failure to properly install the LVDS connectors results in formatter failure. (Figure 9) Figure 9 6 of 10 Upgrading LVDS Cables Instruction Sheet
IMPORTANT: Some projectors are manufactured with PCBs that have an LVDS brace attached. When connecting LVDS harnesses in these units, do the following: a. Line up the LVDS harness connector with the PCB connector and partially insert. (Figure 10) b. Apply a downward force at the center of the harness connector until one side of the connector slides under the retention clip of the connector holder locking it in place. (Figure 11) Figure 10 c. Continue applying a downward force, shifting slightly to the side of the connector that is not clamped down. (Figure 12) Figure 11 Figure 12 12. Re-attach the thermal sensor harness connectors to the corresponding sensor PCBs. 13. Place light engine back in position (inside yellow box) and fasten in place. 14. Find the bottom portion of the clamp in the kit. This piece is engraved with CC at the bottom. With the CC marking facing the cardcage side, fit the grooved edge of the clamp with the u- shaped opening in the firewall where the cables from the light engine pass through to the cardcage. Slide the clamp into place. (Figure 13) Figure 13 15. Connect LVDS cables to FFIB, in the following order (Figure 14): a. Connect RED first. These cables should always be below the other LVDS cables. b. Connect Green, then BLUE. c. The thermal sensor harness should run down the middle of the harness bundle. d. Connect the DC power harnesses. e. Connect the douser harness - this should run along the side of the harness bundle. NOTICE! When installing LVDS cables, it is essential they are connected properly to avoid damaging the pins on the 30-pin connector ends. The cables must be inserted straight into the connectors and not on an angle. Failure to properly install the LVDS connectors results in formatter failure. 16. With the cables connected to the FFIB, route harnesses as per Step 15. (Figure 14). Wrap a cable tie around the bundle of harnesses so that it lines up with the edge of the fan. Cut any excess length off the cable tie (Figure 15) Figure 15 17. Before installing the top portion of the clamp, back out the two captive screws just a bit to make installation easier. 18. Install the top portion of the clamp. TIP: Push the harnesses down slightly when fitting the clamp on. (Figure 16) Figure 16 Upgrading LVDS Cables Instruction Sheet 9 of 10
19. As you are tightening the clamp down, ensure the bundle of harnesses are not taut in between the PCB connectors of the formatter boards and the strain relief clamp in the light engine compartment. Make sure the fine douser harness is free to move and not pinched between the two clamp pieces. (Figure 17) Figure 17 20. Ensure the strain relief clamp sits on the cutout and is not elevated. 21. Install the second cable tie around the harness bundle on the light engine side. Make sure the cable tie is pulled tightly around the harnesses and positioned against the clamp. Cut any excess length off cable tie. (Figure 18) Figure 18 22. Slide the cardcage back into position. 23. Push the LVDS and DC power cables down to install the small plate (removed in Step 4) over them. 24. Secure cardcage. 25. Replace projector s high security lid and top lid. 10 of 10 Upgrading LVDS Cables Instruction Sheet
