1 Introduction HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage delivers secure multi-tenancy, high performance, and high availability to fuel enterprise-class virtual data centers and cloud computing environments. With the release of HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2, host persona 11 (VMware) became the primary persona for all supported versions of VMware ESX/ESXi with HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage systems. The HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 firmware continues that support and establishes host persona 11 (VMware) as the recommended persona for all supported versions of VMware ESX/ESXi in all deployment scenarios. Additionally, HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 will be the last release to support both host persona 11 (VMware) and host persona 6 (Generic-legacy). The legacy host persona 6 (Generic-legacy) will no longer be supported for any version of VMware ESX deployed with major HP 3PAR OS versions that follow HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3. HP recommends that all customers that are on HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2 or higher migrate their ESX configurations to Host Persona 11 (VMware). This document provides guidance for successfully migrating your VMware ESX/ESXi hosts on HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage from host persona 6 (Generic-legacy) to host persona 11 (VMware) to ensure a seamless HP 3PAR host persona transition. NOTE: The support of heterogeneous host persona mentioned in this guide is for persona migration purposes only. HP 3PAR does not support ESX cluster configurations with heterogeneous host persona on HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system for non-host persona migration scenarios. Table 1 Supporting Documentation Documents HP 3PAR VMware ESX/ESXi Implementation Guide HP 3PAR Operating System Upgrade Pre-planning Guide HP 3PAR Remote Copy Software User Guide Technical white paper HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage and VMware vsphere 5 best practices See... http://www.hp.com/go/storage/docs http://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/getpdf.aspx/ 4AA4-3286ENW.pdf Audience This host persona migration guide is intended for system administrators who are responsible for management of the VMware ESX/ESXi and the HP 3PAR OS. NOTE: This guide is not intended to reproduce any third-party product documentation. Overview Changing from host persona 6 (Generic-legacy) to host persona 11 (VMware) for an ESX/ESXi host requires that there are no active or online paths for the ESX/ESXi host to the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system. NOTE: Target-ESX/ESXi host refers to the ESX/ESXi host on which the host persona is being changed. Temporary-ESX/ESXi refers to the ESX/ESXi host used to temporarily host the virtual machines from the Target-ESX/ESXi. Methods for Changing Host Persona There are two methods that can be used to complete the persona change for each ESX/ESXi host. 4 Introduction

Online Process Using VMware vmotion technology, the virtual machines on the selected Target-ESX/ESXi host are first migrated to a Temporary-ESX/ESXi host in a High Availability (HA) cluster environment sharing the same HP 3PAR storage system. The Target-ESX/ESXi host is then powered off, while virtual machines continue to have access to HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system via the Temporary-ESX/ESXi host in the cluster. The requisite host persona change is made for the Target-ESX/ESXi host definition on the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system. After the change, the Target-ESX/ESXi host is powered up and all of its virtual machines are restored back from the Temporary-ESX/ESXi host using VMware vmotion. When you use this method, during the migration process there will be a mix of persona 6 (Generic-legacy) and persona 11 (VMware) based hosts in the cluster. ESX clusters with heterogeneous host persona definitions are supported for this migration process. Offline Process The offline process requires the Target-ESX/ESXi host and any associated active virtual machines to be shutdown. This approach is to power off the Target-ESX/ESXi host and any associated virtual machines for the host. The requisite host persona change is then made for the Target-ESX/ESXi host definition on the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system. After the change, the Target-ESX/ESXi host and its virtual machines are restarted. Preparing for Host Persona Migration Before beginning the migration process, you must follow these requirements: The VMware ESX/ESXi configuration on the HP 3PAR StoreServ storage for the Target-ESX/ESXi host must follow the guidelines found in the HP 3PAR VMware ESX/ESXi Implementation Guide. See the HP Storage Information Library: http://www.hp.com/go/storage/docs See the Single Point of Connectivity Knowledge (SPOCK) website: http://www.hp.com/storage/spock Host persona 11 (VMware) is supported as of HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2. This guide requires an HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage with minimum array firmware version of HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2. Any VMware ESX/ESXi configurations before HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2 must first upgrade to HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2 or later before performing this migration. For upgrade details, see the HP 3PAR Operating System Upgrade Pre-planning Guide on the HP Storage Information Library: http://www.hp.com/go/storage/docs Remote Copy host configurations with independent ESX/ESXi hosts attached to the primary and secondary arrays with HP 3PAR OS 3.1.2 or earlier HP 3PAR OS, host persona 6 (Generic-legacy) is required. HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage systems in these configurations should be first upgraded to HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 prior to the persona migration of the attached ESX/ESXi host(s) from host persona 6 (Generic-legacy) to host persona 11 (VMware). Pre-migration Steps On the target-esx/esxi host, remove any current or existing custom SATP rules used with host persona 6 (Generic-legacy) on the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system. Finding HP 3PAR Custom SATP Rule Run the following command to find any existing SATP custom rules and associated parameters. Preparing for Host Persona Migration 5

For ESXi 5.x: # esxcli storage nmp satp rule list grep -i 3par For ESX/ESXi 4.x: # esxcli nmp satp listrules grep -i 3par If HP 3PAR SATP custom rule does not exist, no value is returned by the command. Continue with the migration. Example where HP 3PAR Custom SATP Rules exist: # esxcli nmp satp listrules grep -i 3par #VMW_SATP_DEFAULT_AA 3PARdata VV user tpgs_off VMW_PSP_RR iops=1 HP 3PAR Custom iscsi/fc/fcoe Rule If HP 3PAR SATP custom rules exist, you must remove them before continuing the migration. See Remove HP 3PAR Custom SATP Rules (page 6) Remove HP 3PAR Custom SATP Rules If HP 3PAR custom SATP rules for use with host persona 6 (Generic-legacy) exists, run the following command to remove them. For ESXi 5.x: # esxcli storage nmp satp rule remove -s <satp> -P <psp> -O <psp_option> -c <claim_option> -V <vendor> -M <model> For ESX/ESXi 4.x: # esxcli nmp satp deleterule -s <satp> -P <psp> -O <psp_option> -c <claim_option> -V <vendor> -M <model> Example with parameters: # esxcli storage nmp satp rule remove -s "VMW_SATP_DEFAULT_AA" -P "VMW_PSP_RR" -O iops=1 -c "tpgs_off" -V "3PARdata" -M "VV" -e" HP 3PAR Custom iscsi/fc/fcoe Rule" 6 Introduction

2 Performing the Migration Using the Online Method The following steps must be applied for each ESX/ESXi host having its host persona migrated. 1. Login to the vsphere Client that manages the Target-ESX/ESXii host. 2. Using VMware vmotion technology, vmotion all virtual machines from the Target-ESX/ESXi host to a Temporary-ESX/ESXi host in the cluster. Verify the vmotion migration completes successfully before continuing to the next step. 3. If you have not already done so, on the Target-ESX/ESXi host, remove any current or existing custom SATP rules used with host persona 6 (Generic-legacy) on the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system. See Finding HP 3PAR Custom SATP Rule (page 5). 4. Add the HP 3PAR custom SATP rule for use with host persona 11(VMware): For ESXi 5.x: # esxcli storage nmp satp rule add -s <satp> -P <psp> -O <psp_option> -c <claim_option> -V <vendor> -M <model> Example with parameters: # esxcli storage nmp satp rule add -s "VMW_SATP_ALUA" -P "VMW_PSP_RR" -O iops=1 -c "tpgs_on" -V "3PARdata" -M "VV" -e "HP 3PAR Custom iscsi/fc/fcoe ALUA Rule" For ESX/ESXi 4.x: # esxcli nmp satp addrule -s <satp> -P <psp> -O <psp_option> -c <claim_option> -V <vendor> -M <model> Example with parameters: # esxcli nmp satp addrule -s "VMW_SATP_ALUA" -P "VMW_PSP_RR" -O iops=1 -c "tpgs_on" -V "3PARdata" -M "VV" -e "HP 3PAR Custom iscsi/fc/fcoe ALUA Rule" NOTE: See the Configuring ESX/ESXi Multipathing for Round Robin via SATP PSP section in the HP 3PAR VMware ESX/ESXi Implementation Guide for detailed information. 5. From the vsphere Client, place the Target-ESX/ESXi host in Maintenance Mode and shut down the Target-ESX/ESXi host. 6. On the HP 3PAR array, run the HP 3PAR CLI command sethost to change the host persona to 11 for the Target-ESX/ESXi host: # sethost -persona 11 <esx-hostname> Verify that the change was successful with the showhost command: # showhost -persona <esx-hostname> 7. Restart the Target-ESX/ESXi host, and then run the showhost command to verify that the ESX/ESXi host is reconnected. # showhost <esx-hostname> 8. From the vsphere Client, exit the Target-ESX/ESXi host from Maintenance Mode. Verify that the Target-ESX/ESXi host reconnected to the cluster successfully. 7

9. From vsphere Client, vmotion all virtual machines back from the Temporary-ESX/ESXi host to the Target-ESX/ESXi host. 10. Verify the virtual machines run properly and the target devices have been claimed properly by the SATP rule as expected. 11. Repeat the above procedure for each ESX/ESXi host until all ESX/ESXi hosts in the cluster are migrated to host persona 11 (VMware). 8 Performing the Migration Using the Online Method

3 Performing the Migration Using the Offline Method The following steps must be applied for each ESX/ESXi host having its host persona migrated. 1. On the Target-ESX/ESXi host, remove any current or existing custom SATP rules being used with host persona 6 (Generic-legacy) on the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage system. See Finding HP 3PAR Custom SATP Rule (page 5) and Remove HP 3PAR Custom SATP Rules (page 6). 2. Run the following command to add the recommended HP 3PAR custom SATP rule for use with host persona 11 (VMware): For ESXi 5.x: # esxcli storage nmp satp rule add -s <satp> -P <psp> -O <psp_option> -c <claim_option> -V <vendor> -M <model> Example with parameters: # esxcli storage nmp satp rule add -s "VMW_SATP_ALUA" -P "VMW_PSP_RR" -O iops=1 -c "tpgs_on" -V "3PARdata" -M "VV" -e "HP 3PAR Custom iscsi/fc/fcoe ALUA Rule" For ESX/ESXi 4.x: # esxcli nmp satp addrule -s <satp> -P <psp> -O <psp_option> -c <claim_option> -V <vendor> -M <model> Example with parameters: # esxcli nmp satp addrule -s "VMW_SATP_ALUA" -P "VMW_PSP_RR" -O iops=1 -c "tpgs_on" -V "3PARdata" -M "VV" -e "HP 3PAR Custom iscsi/fc/fcoe ALUA Rule" NOTE: See the Configuring ESX/ESXi Multipathing for Round Robin via SATP PSP section in the HP 3PAR VMware ESX/ESXi Implementation Guide for detailed information. 3. Shutdown the Target-ESX/ESXi host and its virtual machines. 4. On the HP 3PAR array, run the HP 3PAR CLI command sethost to change the host persona to 11 for the Target-ESX/ESXi host: # sethost -persona 11 <esx-hostname> Verify that the change was successful with the showhost command: # showhost -persona <esx-hostname> 5. Restart the Target-ESX/ESXi host, and then run the showhost command to verify that the ESX/ESXi host is reconnected. # showhost <esx-hostname> 6. Verify the virtual machines run properly and the target devices have been claimed properly by the SATP rule as expected. 7. Repeat the above procedure for each ESX/ESXi host until all ESX/ESXi hosts in the cluster are migrated to host persona 11 (VMware). 9
