1 Marvell BIOS Utility User Guide for HPE MicroServer Gen10 Abstract This user guide provides information on how to use the embedded Marvell BIOS Utility to create and manage RAID virtual disks and arrays. 4 Marvell BIOS Utility The Marvell BIOS Utility (MBU) is built into the embedded Marvell storage controller ROM. Use this utility to create and manage RAID virtual disks and arrays using the drives connected to the embedded storage controller. Accessing the MBU Access to the MBU is supported in both the UEFI and legacy boot modes. Use one of the following procedures to access the BIOS utility. Accessing the MBU in UEFI boot mode 1. Go to the HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 download page ( 2. Click drivers, software & firmware. 3. Select OS Independent from the Operating system drop-down menu. 4. Click Utility. 5. Download the Marvell BIOS Utility (UEFI) HPE MicroServer Gen10 Server package. 6. Unzip the package and copy the ui64.efi file in a USB key. 7. Attach the USB key to the server, and then reboot the server. 8. To access the One-Time Boot Menu, press the F11 key when prompted. 9. Select UEFI: Built-in EFI Shell, and then press the Enter key. 10. To obtain the assigned file system volume for the USB key, enter the map r command at the UEFI Shell prompt. 11. Change to the file system that contains the ui64.efi file, and then press the Enter key. 12. Enter the following command: fs0:\> ui64.efi Where 0 is the server directory for the USB device containing the ui64.efi file. Accessing the MBU in legacy boot mode 1. Reboot the server. 2. On the POST drive information screen, press Ctrl+M. Page 3

5 Using the Marvell BIOS Utility To use the Marvell BIOS Utility, use following keys: Key Up and down arrows Enter Space Esc F10 Function Navigate menu items. Select an item or view a popup menu option. Select states. Return to the previous screen. Save selections and exit the utility. RAID management Creating a virtual disk 1. In the Topology pane, select HBA 0: Marvell 0 and press the Enter key. The Configuration Wizard popup appears. 2. Press the Enter key. 3. Use the arrow keys to scroll through the list of free physical disks. 4. To select/deselect the physical disk to use to create the virtual disk, press the Space bar. An asterisk (*) appears when a disk is selected. 5. After selecting the physical disks, press the Enter key. Page 4

6 6. Select the preferred RAID level and press the Enter key. RAID 0 RAID 0 (disk striping) is recommended for applications that require high read/write performance, but does not require fault tolerance. This RAID level requires at least two physical drives. RAID 1 RAID 1 (disk mirroring) is recommended for applications that require read performance and fault tolerance. This RAID level requires exactly two physical drives. RAID 10 RAID 10 (disk striping and mirroring) is recommended for applications that require high read performance and fault tolerance. This RAID level requires a minimum of four physical drives. 7. Select the stripe size for the virtual disk and press the Enter key. 8. A default name is assigned to the new virtual disk. To rename the virtual disk: a. Select the Name field. b. Enter a new name. c. Press the Enter key. 9. Select Next. 10. Press the Enter key. A dialog box appears to confirm the virtual disk creation. 11. To create the virtual disk, press the Y key. The new virtual disk appears in the Topology pane. RAID configuration data RAID configuration data is stored on all physical disks that are part of a virtual disk. When this physical disk is moved from one system to another, that disk is considered a foreign disk. To use this disk in another virtual disk in the destination system, the original configuration data must be erased. Page 5

7 Erasing RAID configuration data Caution Erasing RAID configuration from a physical disk erases all data on that disk, as well as the original virtual disk configuration data. 1. In the Topology pane, select the foreign disk and press the Enter key. A menu popup appears. 2. Select Erase RAID Config Data and press the Enter key. A warning message appears. 3. To erase the RAID configuration data, press the Y key. Deleting a virtual disk Deleting a virtual disk permanently erases all data on the virtual disk. After deleting a virtual disk, the physical disks constituting the virtual disk become available for use in other virtual disks. To delete a virtual disk: Page 6

8 1. In the Topology pane, select the virtual disk to delete and press the Enter key. A menu popup appears. 2. Press the Enter key. A virtual disk deletion confirmation prompt appears. 3. To confirm the virtual disk deletion, select Y. An MBR deletion confirmation prompt appears. 4. To confirm the MBR deletion, select Y. Degraded virtual disks A fault tolerant virtual disk becomes degraded when one or more member physical disks fail. A degraded virtual disk has no fault tolerance. Important The virtual disk rebuild process is faster when using the Marvell Storage Utility, instead of the Marvell BIOS Utility. To rebuild a degraded virtual disk: Caution Interrupting the rebuild process can lead to data loss or damage to the system. Deleting the virtual disk or removing/disconnecting the replacement physical disks during the rebuild process interrupts the process. 1. In the Topology pane, locate the virtual disk marked as Degraded. Page 7

9 4. Use the arrow keys to scroll through the Free Physical Disks list, and press the Space bar to select the replacement physical disk. 5. Press the Enter key. A menu popup appears. 6. Select Rebuild and press the Enter key. A virtual disk confirmation prompt appears. Page 8
