Windows XP mode in Windows 7 -> e-config Installation 1. Introduction Windows XP Mode is a new benefit of Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate and provides additional application compatibility. It allows you to install and run many of your productivity applications for Windows XP directly from your Windows 7-based PC. It utilizes virtualization technology, such as Windows Virtual PC, to provide a virtual Windows XP environment for Windows 7. 1 The purpose of this document is to provide a guide to install and configure the e-config application using Microsoft XP mode with Microsoft Windows 7 64 bits environments. The document is divided in two sections: Installation and configuration of the Windows XP mode Installation of e-config application in the Windows XP mode environment 2. Install and configure Windows XP mode in Windows 7 When using Windows XP Mode, it is possible to run programs that were designed for Windows XP on computers running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions. This document will demonstrate the installation and configuration steps for XP mode on the Windows 7 Professional version. The following six general steps are needed to install and configure XP mode. 1. Verify the operating system is running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate. 2. Determine if the computer's CPU is capable of hardware-assisted virtualization. 3. If computer s CPU supports hardware-assisted virtualization, enable it. 4. Download and install Windows XP Mode. 5. Set up Windows XP Mode for first use. 6. Install and use a program in Windows XP Mode. 2.1 Verify the operating system is running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate. To find out which edition of Windows 7 you're running, follow the next steps: 1. Click the Start button 1 Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC frequently asked questions - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/faq.aspx Page 3 of 27

Once this file has been downloaded, run it (accept program make changes in the computer) 3. Accept tool license agreement and click on Next button. Page 4 of 27

If the CPU is capable of hardware-assisted virtualization then you will receive the following two messages: Message a) Message b) a) The computer is capable to run virtualizations but it ISN T ENABLE, to enable this go to section 2.3) b) The computer is capable and configured, (then skips section 2.3 and go to section 2.4) Page 5 of 27

If the CPU is NOT capable of hardware-assisted virtualization then you will receive the following message: 2.3 If computer s CPU supports hardware-assisted virtualization, enable it. If you receive an error message saying "Hardware-assisted virtualization is disabled," this means your computer supports hardware-assisted virtualization, but you need to change settings in your computer's BIOS to turn on hardware-assisted virtualization. To enable/disable this function follow the next steps: Important: These steps are designed for Lenovo Thinkcentre systems if you need additional information for another machine please open the link: Support: Configure BIOS for Hardware Assisted Virtualization (HAV) PCs (See LINK-10) 1. Reboot the machine 2. Click the F1 key to enter to the BIOS setup utility 3. Using the arrow keys, move to the Advanced menu 4. 3. Install e-config application using Windows XP mode through Window 7 Professional. In the previous sections the process to set-up Windows XP mode through Windows 7 was explained. In the remaining sections the configured XP mode will be referred as target machine. It should be managed like any other normal XP machine where if you need to install additional software you can do it like a normal XP environment. Before installing the e-config application it is necessary to know the following considerations: 1. It is necessary to install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM) in the target machine before installing e-config. 2. The e-config application will be installed by downloading code from a web page 3. All actions should be performed using Windows XP mode. To open Windows XP mode: 1. In Windows 7, click the Start button, click All Programs, click Windows Virtual PC, and then click Windows XP Mode. Follow the next sections to install the e-config application: 3.1 JRE Installation 1. Download Java Runtime Environment (JRE) You can download the Java Runtime Environment from the Oracle website. The recommended version for e-padm is JRE 1.4.2 or higher. (See LINK-14). Page 13 of 27

IBM Employees must use the supported IBM JRE version published in ISSI. Instructions below are for reference only. 1.1 Open the Oracle website in a new browser window in the Windows XP mode: 1.2 Select JRE Link: 1.3 Select Windows from the platform dropdown, read the license agreement and accept it (if you are agree) and click on continue button. Page 14 of 27

1.4 Click on a link for a version higher than JRE 1.4.2 and download it. 2. - Run the Java Runtime file. Double click on the downloaded file on your desktop. Follow the setup instructions 3. - Restart your computer The Java setup program asks to restart your computer 'now' or 'later'. Please restart your computer now to continue. Page 15 of 27

Select Actions > Restart option in the Windows XP model top menu. 3.2 MSJVM installation You must be at the latest level of Microsoft JVM to run e-config. To install to the latest level 1. Open a browser in Windows XP mode 2. Download and install the file msjavx86.exe, this will install the Microsoft JVM 3805 level. msjvmx86.exe (See LINK-11) 2. Update the install by downloading and installing the file msjavx86_3810.exe. This will update the JVM install to the 3810 level, which is the latest available. msjvmx86_3810.exe (See LINK-12) IMPORTANT: While IBM is contractually allowed to provide the MSJVM, Microsoft is no longer supporting it. The user must understand that the code being installed is not supported nor being updated by Microsoft. Page 16 of 27

3.3 Install e-config: 1. Open the Portal List for Downloading e-config code and price files (See LINK-13) page and select the appropriate portal to install e-config 2. Logon to the appropriate portal and navigating to e-config (IBM Configurator for e- business) 3. The e-padm page will be displayed. Select the installation type. It could be: Install/Update or LAN drive then click on Continue button. *Notice: If a Security Information window appears, accept the digital signature displayed, it is displayed when it is the first time that you run the e-config applet. Page 17 of 27

8. Click on OK button, and then click on Close button. 9. Select the top menu: Action > Restart option. 10. Once Windows XP console has been rebooted the econfig folder will be generated in the Desktop XP console: Page 20 of 27

11.- In Windows 7 a new entry will be generated in the Windows Virtual PC: All programs > Windows Virtual PC > Windows XP mode Applications New econfig folder will be created with all the e-config related programs inside. Note: Those programs can be launched through Windows 7 environment or can be launched from Windows XP mode environment: *Important: If you want to run a Windows XP application installed on the target machine through Windows 7, you should close the Windows XP Mode window first. Page 21 of 27

4. Share files through XP mode and Windows 7. It is possible to share files from XP mode environment to Windows 7 environment. By default in XP mode when open My PC some resources are displayed: Green devices are the XP mode local devices; Other s resources (yellow color and red box) are the Windows 7 devices which are available through XP mode. In the example above, C on ECONFIG-PC resource is the equivalent to the C: drive in Windows 7, (where ECONFIG-PC is the name of the Windows 7 machine). In this image in Windows 7 there are two hard drive resources: C and D. However in the XP mode environment one more device is visible: E, it is because letter E is related to the CD-ROM drive of the Windows 7 machine. Page 22 of 27

4.1 Share a folder from Windows 7 environment To be able to share folders to XP mode and Windows 7 it is necessary to have a shared folder in Windows 7. Follow the next steps to accomplish this task: 1. Create a new folder in C path on Windows 7 2. Right click on the folder created and select > Properties option 3. Click on the Sharing tab. 4.
