Description The di gi tal con ver ter Mo del CNV 9101 is used to con vert the po si ti on of ab so lu te en - co ders with Syn chro nous- Se rial- In ter face (SSI) to par al lel out put. The code of the par al lel out put can be se lec ted bet we en GRAY, Bina ry or BCD. In ad di ti on the out put li nes can be swit ched to a high im pe dan ce sta te for mul ti ple xing. Applications Trans mis si on on SSI in ter face with high im mu ni ty against EMI in stead of par al lel EMI- pro ne trans mis si on. Re pla ce ment for par al lel ab so lu te en co ders. 3. Mounting 3. Mounting 3.1. Place of operation At ten ti on must be paid to the pro tec tion against hu mi di ty, dust and high tem pe ra tu res at the place of ope ra ti on. 3.2. At tach in put and out put wi res to con nec tors only wi thout vol ta ges applied. Cords must be pro vi ded with slee ves. At ten ti on must be paid that the po wer supply vol ta ge applied will agree with the vol ta ge no ti ced at the name pla te. The in stru ment has no po wer- on switch, so it will be in ope ra ti on as soon as the po wer is con nec ted. 4.2. Hints against noisy environment All in puts and out puts are pro tec ted against noisy en vi ron ment and high vol ta ge spikes. Ne vert he less the lo ca ti on should be se lec ted to en su re that no ca pa ci ti ve or in duc ti ve in ter fe rence can have an ef fect on the in stru ment or con nec tion li nes. It is ad visab le: To use shiel ded cables. The wi ring of shields and groung (0V) should be star- sha ped. The di stan ce to in ter fe rence sour ces should be as far as pos si ble. If ne cessa ry, pro tec ti ve scre en or me tal en clo su res must be pro vi ded. Coils of re lays must be supp lied with fil ters. Par al lel wi ring of in put si gnals and AC po wer li nes should be avoi - ded. The par al lel out put li nes must be as short as pos si ble. It is ne cessa ry to use shiel ded twi sted pair cable for the RS422- li nes as well as for the SSI si gnal li nes. ERMA-Electronic GmbH 6

Connection of absolute encoder Encoder (GND) Data- Data+ Clock + Clock - Some ma nu fac turers of SSI en co ders are using dif fe rent si gnal de si gna ti on. By this reason it is pos si ble that clock or data li nes must be ex chan ged (+/- of clock and/or data). The in put cir - cuits of the CNV 9101 are swit ching ap pro xi mate ly with 1/2 Vs. Bit 0 - Bit 25 Mul ti ple xed, high side swit ching out puts. Re ser ve The se mul ti ple xed out put line is pro vi ded for ex ten ti on in fu tu re and should not be used. Er ror 1 This mul ti ple xed out put is an alarm out put for fai lu re on the SSI si gnals. Er ror 2 This mul ti ple xed out put is an alarm out put for fai lu re on the out put li nes. Strobe This mul ti ple xed out put will send an out put pul se (high si gnal of a du ra ti on of 10 ms), when out put data is va lid (not chan ging). If this out put line is not used, it can be left open. Data 1 0 / open Strobe 1 0 / open 10 ms Output Enable This is an in put line which is con trolling the sta te of the mul ti ple xed out put li nes. If the in put out put en ab le is low (con nec ted to GND or left open), out put li nes are ac tiv. If the in put level of this in put is high, the mul ti ple xed out put li nes are in ac tiv. 4. Electrical connections Hold This in put is used to free ze the ac tu al out put data. It is use ful if the re cei ving unit is very slow. Da tas will not change if the in put level of the hold in put is high. If not used this in put line can be left open or con nec ted to GND. Data Hold 1 0 / open 1 0 / open max. 30 ms Input Circuit The in put chan nels of the CNV 9101 re qui re po si tiv vol ta ge levels. The thres hold level of the in put chan nels is about 1/2 Vs. Output Circuit The mul ti ple xed out put chan nels of the CNV 9101 are high side swit ching and short cir cuit pro tec ted. In ad di ti on the se out puts can be swit ched off by an out put en ab le si gnal. Vs GND GND To in crea se out put fre quen cy and to re du ce the in flu ence of di tur ban ce and noisy en vi ron ment it is advan ta ge ous to con nect add tio nal re si stan - ces from the out put li nes to GND. By chan ging the ad just ment the cu sto mer can al ter the stan dard con fi gu ra ti on ac cor ding to his mea su ring task. At ten ti on! When the in stru ment is built in a ma chi ne and the cu sto mer wants to change the con fi gu ra ti on, at ten ti on must be paid, that no da ma ge will oc cur to the ma chi ne! LED-Functions LED 1 LED 2 LED1 off lights green lights red flashs red/green no supply voltage applied or internal defect it s all right failure on the SSI-inteface Info: CNV 9101 didn t receive any new value from SSI-inteface within the last minute LED 2 The il lu mi na ti on of LED 2 shows, that a fai lu re on the par al lel out put chan nels has oc - cu red. In the case of a short cir cuit at one of the par al lel out put li nes, this out put chan - nel will be swit ched off and LED 2 is shi ning. If the short cir cuit is re mo ved the re are two so lu ti ons to re turn to nor mal ope ra ti on. 8. Handling of misfunctions 8. Handling of misfunctions All de vi ces of ER MA- E lectro nic GmbH are te sted for perfect func tion du ring pro duc - tion as well as when de li vered. Ne vert he less it is pos si ble that a de vice won t work. That is not all ways a reason by the new de vice. The re are many small reasons that will re sult in mis func ti ons. If the CNV 9101 won t work pro perly, plea se check the fol - lo wing points. 8.1. LED 1 remains dark Look for pro per supply vol ta ge Look for pro per wi ring of supply If all tests are all right, the de vice must be send back for re pair. 8.2. LED 1 lit red Look for pro per wi ring bet we en SSI- en co der and CNV 9101(see hints on page ) Look for pro per po wer supply of the SSI- en co der Look for pro per con fi gu ra ti on (only one Ma ster on the SSI- in ter face? Pa ra me ters of en co der cor re spon ding the pa ra me ters on CNV 9101?) Clock of the SSI- ma ster must be less than 125 khz (only Sla ve- Mo de) If all tests are all right, the de vice must be send back for re pair. 8.3. LED 2 lit red Look for the wi ring of the par al lel out put li nes. Look if tech ni cal da tas of the par al lel out puts are ex cee ded (also for a short time) Look if high vol ta ge spikes are exi sting and have an in flu ence to the de vice. If all tests are all right, the de vice must be send back for re pair. 8.4. Other failures If any other mis func tion oc curs plea se have a look to all tests abo ve.
