BRANDING MISSION The UNG Department of Athletics and Office of Athletic Communications has prepared this guide for exclusive use in maintenance of an athletics identity program. It is the responsibility of each person to see that usage and trademark protocols are followed for all communications. This guide has been produced to help the University of North Georgia athletics community promote our department with a uniform consistency. It does not attempt to address every possible situation. Rather, it provides general guidelines while emphasizing the benefits of being consistent in the way we represent UNG Athletics in printed and other visual communication. University of North Georgia ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS 82 College Circle Dahlonega, GA 30597 P: (706) 867-3250 UNGAthletics.com The University of North Georgia places a high value on the visual image of its athletic department. As a result, UNG and the Nighthawk athletics teams have become more recognized around the state of Georgia as well as the entire Southeast region. North Georgia benefits from the public recognition of its name, symbols, logos, and other identifying marks. These things give North Georgia a unifying image that distinguishes its programs from other universities. UNG has a responsibility to protect the use of its trademarked logos and identifying marks to ensure the quality and consistency matches the University. All royalties from the licensing program benefit the University to support scholarship programs throughout the school. The reasons for trademarks and licensing is to ensure the proper use of the UNG athletics identity and to generate income to support and enhance the scholastic missions of the University of North Georgia. All vendors using any of the trademarked logos that represent UNG Nighthawk athletics must be licensed. University marks are registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and can only be used to represent the University of North Georgia. All athletic logos can only be used to represent UNG athletics teams. UNG ATHLETICS IDENTITY STANDARDS GUIDE 2

APPROVAL PROCESS & GUIDELINES WHAT PRODUCTS REQUIRE BRANDING APPROVAL? Any product that will be viewed by an external audience requires branding approval and products that will be sold as merchandise require additional vendor recognition and approval from LRG/Learfield. Products that are not sold and used internally require final approval from the UNG Athletic Communications office before final production. All product that uses the UNG Athletics brand or name must be approved and include, but are not limited to: t-shirts, uniforms, outdoor signage, electronic presentations, print materials, building signage and any other product that has an external audience. WHAT IS THE BRANDING APPROVAL PROCESS? Once the vendor has secured your order and constructed the artwork to the purchaser s liking, then the final art should be sent via email. The artwork will be reviewed to ensure brand identity compliance and returned for adjustments or approved for processing. NIGEL THE NIGHTHAWK MASCOT UNG worked with Rickabaugh Graphics, one of the nation s top graphic design companies, to create the Nighthawks brand. Focus groups working to identify ideal traits of the brand decided the style of the Nighthawks image should be serious, and that it should reflect an old-school design. The Nighthawk also represents key descriptors that the focus group participants used for the Nighthawks: proud, determined, respected, tough, aggressive, dignified, and relentless. The firm Street Characters, which has produced mascots for such notable professional sports franchises as the National Football League s Denver Broncos and Major League Baseball s Detroit Tigers, developed the mascot haracter.
