ALL-IP Where SME s get down to work high-speed internet meets all-ip at Industriepark Region Trier Ready for the future with carrier SWT trilan Trier is Germany s oldest city, with a history that spans more than 2000 years. Yet the town has remained young at heart. Situated in the very center of Europe, Trier in an attractive location for the many businesses of its thriving economy. A considerable number of small and mid-sized Trier enterprises are setting up shop at the industrial park Industriepark Region Trier (IRT). More than 130 businesses with 2500 employees already share the location s infrastructure and services. Once the industrial park has reached full capacity, roughly 160 companies will be located there. Thanks to young, growing providers in this university town as well as the ubiquitous coverage of its modern and secure network infrastructure, these companies will enjoy optimum conditions for their economic and digital (all-ip) futures.

The future for SMEs PROJECT REQUIREMENTS: CONCEPT/SOLUTION: Broadband expansion at Industriepark Region Trier Optical fiber throughout the park with FTTB, FTTH, and on-premise all-ip The Trier network operator SWT trilan conducted the forward-looking broadband expansion at Industriepark Region Trier, enabling seamless communications for the small and mid-sized businesses there. A local partner with considerable expertise, SWT trilan offers professional technology and extensive experience. They also provide assistance in transitioning to the new all-ip network. trilan stands for trier local area network, emphasizing the organization s regional focus as the telecommunications arm of Trier s public utility district, Stadtwerke Trier (SWT). As an alternative carrier, trilan offers flexible voice, data, and internet communications solutions and services and also builds its own network infrastructure. The provider s local presence was a key advantage for the industrial park operator IRT and the other businesses at the 110-hectare site, where the VDSL broadband expansion over fiber optic cables was planned. BENEFITS: High-speed internet connectivity, efficient communications workflows in the all-ip network PRODUCTS USED: Upon completion, roughly 80 all-ip be.ip and 20 be.ip plus systems CUSTOMERS: NETWORK OPERATOR: Industrieparkbetreiber Region Trier and around 160 SMEs (upon completion) SWT trilan GmbH Transitioning from ISDN to all-ip also required modifications to existing IT infrastructures at the individual businesses in the park. The expansion united all services including internet, e-mail, fax, and telephony under the same transfer protocol, IP. A number of established ISDN-based services needed to find a path into the now exclusively IP universe of the new network. The all-ip systems of bintec elmeg s be.ip series were a natural choice for modern IPbased communications at the industrial park. These powerful yet flexible media and VPN gateways offer secure internet access, VPN routing, and wireless LAN connectivity in a single device. The lineup also includes a professional IP business telephone system that can be expanded through additional licenses (be.ip plus).

The right technology mix The planned expansion of the regional industrial park presented an opportunity to replace its outdated technical infrastructure with upgraded high-speed internet. The existing ADSL connectivity came from a main distribution frame (MDF) located 7 km away, offering a maximum bandwidth of 6 Mbps. The goal of the new network was to achieve high bandwidths for the subscriber lines. Modern fiber-optic lines are the wave of the future for this type of application. For this project, fiber-optic lines were combined with VDSL2 on customer premises. A key aspect here is that fiber optics offer practically limitless symmetrical bandwidth. SWT trilan worked in cooperation with SWT Stadtwerke Trier Versorgungs GmbH to provide all the network planning and implementation of the fiber-optic infrastructure project on-site in close coordination with the industrial park operator, IRT. FTTB (fiber to the building) technology was used to bring the fiber up to the customer s building, where the existing on-premise equipment and wiring terminate at the demarcation point. For new buildings, however, fiber to the home (FTTH) is used. This technology brings fiber all the way into the individual offices. A sound investment all-in-one solutions for seamless communications In addition to the bintec elmeg solution, a device from another leading provider was also tested for its suitability to provide all-ip business communications for the companies in the park. The solutions were examined for use at customers with no more than two ISDN lines. The all-in-one-solutions from bintec elmeg s be.ip series scored points for their easy configuration and high cost effectiveness. Michael Mut from SWT trilan s technical service department confirmed: For the price, bintec elmeg s flexible be.ip series is a real alternative to traditional media gateways. They re easy to integrate into IP-based networks. To avoid costly excavation work, all existing conduits including district heating and water pipes were considered while planning the new network. Thanks to modern fiber connectors, fiber-optic cabling can be run into the structure through pipes that are no longer in use. Inside the building, the individual offices are then connected to the network using the existing copper wiring and VDSL2 (FTTB). Alternatively, an internet connection can be established by taking optical fiber all the way to the terminal device (optical network terminal or ONT).

For the price, bintec elmeg s flexible be.ip series is a real alternative to traditional media gateways. They re easy to integrate into IP-based networks. Michael Mut, technical service department by SWT trilan Depending on customer requirements, SWT trilan either uses the be.ip purely as a media gateway for small business customers or integrates the be.ip plus into the network as a complete IP telephone system. The be.ip comes equipped with two ISDN interfaces, which allow companies at IRT to continue using their existing telephone systems (completely vendor-agnostic) and the accompanying terminal devices such as telephones and fax machines on the new IP-based network. In addition, these professional media and VPN gateways combine secure internet access via VDSL; professional routing; VPN/IPSec with up to five simultaneous tunnels; and wireless LAN all in a single system. No terminal equipment needs to be replaced that makes the new all-ip system not only a technological upgrade, but also a way to continue leveraging existing investments. We re using the be.ip purely as a media gateway for customers with up to two ISDN lines, no matter whether they ve got ISDN telephone systems or a point-to-multipoint connection, explained Michael Mut, a service technician at SWT trilan. The all-in-one be.ip plus solution is used by SWT trilan at companies that do not have an existing telephone system suitable for continued use or in cases in which the telephone system was already scheduled for replacement. The be.ip plus provides the functionality of two devices in a single system. Just like the be.ip, it can be used for smooth migration of existing ISDN telephone systems, while also transforming by means of changing a setting in the software into a fully functional communications hub if required at a later date. The be.ip plus can be upgraded to as many as 40 subscribers, 6 wireless access points, and 10 VPN tunnels through additional licenses. Customized connectivity The be.ip systems are ideal for a broad range of scenarios and offer the right highspeed internet connectivity for any application. SWT trilan offers its customers the following options: FTTB When copper cabling is already installed at the premises, the integrated VDSL2 modem in the be.ip series guarantees a fast internet connection, with customers enjoying symmetrical upstream and downstream bandwidths of 50 Mbps. FTTH In this case, users connect to the internet directly through the be.ip systems by means of a glass to copper converter. Within the framework of the VDSL expansion, additional companies are constantly being connected to the network at Industriepark Region Trier. Once the park reaches full capacity, around 100 all-ip systems from bintec elmeg will be operating there, with approximately 80 be.ip units and 20 be.ip plus systems. The new solution has been extremely well-received by the small and mid-sized businesses in the industrial park. In addition to fast and secure broadband, these bintec elmeg all-ip systems guarantee seamless and efficient workflows and a smooth transition into the new world of IP-based communications
