What guidelines are available fr Sub-editrs and Referees? A Cmbustin File dwnladed frm the IFRF Online Cmbustin Handbk ISSN 1607-9116 Cmbustin File N: 34 Versin N: 4 Date: 26-01-2004 Authr(s): Surce(s): Referee(s): Status: Spnsr: Neil Fricker; Patrick Lavery Authrs Peter Rberts Published IFRF NET 1. The rles f the Sub-editr IFRF Cmbustin Handbk Sub-editrs will have been allcated a tpic fr which Cmbustin Files are t be prepared. Such Cmbustin Files (CFs) are assciated with a specific flder within a drawer within a cabinet in the Handbk filing system (see Filing System in Cmbustin Handbk). Depending n the tpic, a Sub-editr may be respnsible fr sme r all f the Cmbustin Files in a single flder, fr a grup f flders within a drawer, fr a set f drawers within a cabinet, r even an entire cabinet. Sub-editrs are asked t prpse the cntent and structure (in the case f drawers and cabinets) f Cmbustin Files within their area f respnsibility, and nminate titles fr each CF. This is agreed with the Editr in Chief and the Handbk Prducer. The Prducer then allcates unique CF Numbers t each Cmbustin File. These remain with the Cmbustin File cncerned thrughut its life, and are never re-allcated, even if the Cmbustin File is unpublished r withdrawn. At this pint the CF is Planned. Sub-editrs will be able t use an n-line Status Reprt in the Backrm sectin f the Handbk t mnitr the status f their CFs (and all thers that have passed the Planned stage). Access t the Handbk Backrm will require the use f the subeditr s usual IFRF passwrd. Sub-editrs identify ptential authrs fr their Cmbustin Files, and make infrmal appraches. The Handbk Prducer makes a frmal apprach t authrs ntified by Sub-editrs as agreeing t draft the Cmbustin File(s) requested. At that time the Prducer prvides t authrs the style and cntent requirements, within a template which includes the title, CF number and ther relevant credits infrmatin. A sub editr may authr Cmbustin Files within their tpic area in this case, an independent referee must be identified.
The Sub-editr shuld als at this pint: Cnfirm his/her intentin t referee the CF, r prpse an alternative referee; Indicate the initial filing lcatin (cabinet, drawer, flder); At this pint, the CF is Cmmissined. Once a CF is drafted, it is sent t the Sub-editr r nminated alternative referee fr refereeing (see belw). At this pint, the CF is Authred. On agreement f the basic cmpnents f the CF with the Authr, Sub-editrs are asked t cnfirm the chice f key wrds (prpsed by authr) t be used with the CF fr the Handbk search engine. Suggestins fr secndary links t the CF frm ther lcatins within the Handbk Filing System shuld als be prpsed at this pint (the Editr-in- Chief takes final respnsibility fr this functin). Once the refereeing is cmplete, Sub-editrs shuld indicate their final apprval t the Authr, with a cpy t handbk@ifrf.net, and instruct the Authr t mail the final MSWrd file and assciated graphics file(s) t handbk@ifrf.net as a zipped email attachment. At this pint the CF is Refereed. The refereed CF as an MSWrd frmat is then reviewed by the Editr-in-Chief and Prducer, and in agreement with the Sub-editr, the CF is designated as Agreed. Fllwing this, the riginal dcuments are prgrammed int html and pdf frmats at the IFRF NET Cmmunicatins Centre and published in the Handbk Backrm. The next stage is t infrm the Editrial Bard (including the Sub-editr) that the CF has been published Editrial Bard status. A pdf cpy is als sent t the authr and referee. They, and the Editrial Bard have up t 7 calendar days t give their cmments. After that, the CF is given the status Apprved. The CF is Published at a date t be agreed fllwing cmmunicatin between the Subeditr, the Editr in Chief and the Prducer. 2. Refereeing check-list When refereeing a Cmbustin File (CF), the verriding aim is t ensure that the material is a valid, cncise and well-presented tl fr the ultimate user. The fllwing checklist is intended t help ensure cnsistency in this aim. Please answer each pint giving additinal guidance where apprpriate. Please remember that the reputatin f the IFRF and its future grwth will be enhanced if the CFs are f gd quality and crrect befre they appear n the web site.
