Engineering, Built Environment and IT Department of Computer Science MIT C Projects Portal User Manual Last Update: 24 August 2017 1 Requesting an Account This section highlights the steps that are required to request an account. Step 1 In order to request an account you will need to go directly to the following URL: http://cs.up.ac.za/mitc_projects/account_request You will then be presented with the following screen: 1
Step 2 Once you have selected Company, Academic or Student on the previous screen, you need to select whether you are new to the system or already have an account. Step 3 If you select new user you will be presented with the following screen: On this form you will have to input the details of the new user: The Company name will also serve as the username that you will use to log onto the website. Therefore, if you are more than one person from the same company, use Company FirstName LastName Dept as your username, e.g. if you are from the University of Pretoria, use UP FirstName LastName Dept to ensure a unique username. The Contact name, Contact surname, Contact number, and Email are the details for the person that will recieve any contact from the system, such as emails from the MIT C coordinator or emails confirming that a student has taken on a project. Once you have filled in this form and clicked Submit Query, the portal s admin must first approve the request. You will be notified by email as soon as the account request has been approved or denied. Page 2
2 Logging into Portal This section highlights the process of logging into the system and accessing the different functions. Step 1 Once your account has been approved you can go to the computer science website s home page at http://cs.up.ac.za. At the bottom right of the page you can login. If this is the first time you are logging in, you can use the Forgot password link and follow the instructions to reset your password. Step 2 Once you have logged in a grey bar will appear on the page. From there click on the MITC Portals link in the grey bar (refer to figure on next page). Page 3
This link will direct you to a page with the various functionalities of the portal: Portal functionality If you want to create a project, click on the Projects Portal button. If you want to create a dissertation topic, click on the Dissertation portal button. If you want to see the student view, click on the Student portal button. Page 4
3 Creating a Project Topic This section discusses the steps that are required to create a project topic. Step 1 Clicking on the Projects Portal button on the previous page will take you to the page below. You can add mentors (which will be needed to add a project) in the mentor management section. On this page you will also see the deadlines in red for both the project topic proposals and the bids for the topics by the students. Step 2 Clicking on the Create New Project button will take you to the following form: Page 5
Take note: All of the field are required fields, i.e. they must be filled in. You can select multiple mentors for a project by holding Ctrl button and clicking on multiple mentor entries with your mouse. You must select at least one mentor to act as the point of contact between you and the students. If there is only one mentor in the list, you must still select it. Page 6
Step 3 After creating a project you should see this page: If the project has successfully been added, the following green success message will appear: Project Sucessfully Created. You will see the list of the project topics that you have added under Current Projects. You can view the project again by clicking the View button next to the project. You can also see which students have made a bid for the project by clicking the Bids button. Page 7
4 Creating a Dissertation Topic Clicking on the Dissertation Portal button (refer to figure on page 4) will take you to the page below. You can add mentors (which will be needed to add a dissertation topic) in the mentor management section. On this page you will also see the deadlines in red for both the project topic proposals and the bids for the topics by the students. Step 2 Clicking on the Create New Dissertation button will take you to the following form: Page 8
Take note: All of the field are required fields, i.e. they must be filled in. You can select multiple mentors (supervisors) for a dissertation topic by holding Ctrl button and clicking on multiple mentor entries with your mouse. You must select at least one supervisor. Take note that if the supervisor is not from the School of IT, then a co-supervisor from within the school of IT will have to be selected. If in this case no co-supervisor is selected, a co-supervisor from the School of IT will be assigned to the topic. If there is only one mentor in the list, you must still select it. Page 9
Step 3 After creating a dissertation topic you should see this page: If the dissertation topic has successfully been added, the following green success message will appear: Dissertation Sucessfully Created. You will see the list of the dissertation topics that you have added under Current Dissertation Topics. You can view the dissertation topic again by clicking the View button next to the topic. You can also see which students have made a bid for the topic by clicking the Bids button. Page 10
