Downloading & Reading ebooks On A Nook You bought the Nook and have downloaded books from the B&N Store. Cool! You ve also heard that you can get free ebooks to download from your local library s website. But how does that work? This handout will explain the process of downloading a book to your Nook, reading the book, and returning the book. On your computer, open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome. Go to your local library s website, such as http://www.amarillolibrary.org. Navigate to the OverDrive link to ebooks. Look for icons such as those to the right. Click the OverDrive logo, as shown to the right. To the right is a screenshot of the OverDrive website for the Harrington Library Consortium. (HLC). Tip! After arriving at the OverDrive home page, Bookmark it/add it to your favorites. Now, the next time you want to download an ebook for your Nook, just go to your favorites. Begin by logging into your account. Click the Login button in the header of the page. Now enter your library card barcode number and PIN and click the Sign In button. If you don t remember your PIN, please call your local library. Important Requirement! The Nook, and other ereaders using the epub format, must download and install the free software, Adobe Digital Editions. Skip to next page, if you ve already installed Adobe Digital Editions. The Adobe Digital Editions software allows you to do two things. o Transfer the downloaded ebook to your Nook. o Actually read the ebook on your computer. Look to the vertical blue bar, on the left side of the page. Scroll down toward the bottom of the list of links. Click on Adobe Digital Editions. You will be taken to the OverDrive Help page. Click on the link To download Adobe Digital Editions, click here. Next, you will be taken to the Adobe.com website. Scroll down on the page and click on the button, shown to the right. This will launch the installer. Follow the steps to complete the installation. When running Adobe Digital Editions for the first time, you will be asked to Authorize the Computer. To do this, you will need an Adobe ID. It takes only a couple of minutes. You will need to provide your name, e-mail address, and location. Don t fill in the other information. Only those items shown to the right are required. Once Adobe Digital Editions is authorized, After Installing Adobe Digital Editions The quickest way to the ebook section, is to find the blue navigation bar on the left. Scroll down to almost the bottom. Click on the link, View all ebooks. Tip! The direct web address is http://tinyurl.com/7zd3czp which you can bookmark! The landing page, for ebooks, is shown to the right. It is recommended that you Sign In first which will make the checkout process go smoother. You ll need your library card number and pin. The search box, indicated by the red arrow, will allow you to focus your search on ebooks. After you find the book you would like to download, you ll see the details for downloading. Now, it s decision time ;-) Most importantly, make sure it says epub!. You now have some choices: o Proceed to checkout o Continue browsing for another book (you can check out a total of two). o Click Remove to start all over. After clicking Proceed To Checkout, you ll be give an opportunity to Sign In, if you ve not already done so. Check Out Page Be sure to select the appropriate length, for the checkout period. Click the Confirm Checkout button. Notice: You still have time to back out by clicking the Remove link. Notice the date checked out and the expiration date. Click the Download button. You ll now get a dialog box informing you that you are about to download your ebook. Make sure the Open with Adobe Digital Editions is selected. Downloading Your Book Your book will begin the download process, as shown to the right. Make sure your Nook is plugged into your computer with its USB cable. The Nook icon should be visible at the bottom of the library list in Adobe Digital Editions. Now, all you have to do is drag the book from your computer s Library to your Nook. When you see the green + sign, drop the book. Last, but not least, click the Get Library Book button. Click on the Nook icon, and you should see the book in its library. Safely remove the Nook. Disconnect the Nook from the computer. Locating your book on your Nook Depending on the model of your Nook, the downloaded ebook should be located in either the Library or Documents. Read Book ;-) Returning Your Book You can return your book as soon as you are finished reading it. Open Adobe Digital Editions. Select the book you wish to return. Click on the small downward pointing triangle, in the upper left of the book icon. Click Return Borrowed Item. Optionally, click on Delete Item which will remove it from your library.
