REFWORKS RefWorks allows one to write a paper in MS Word, and to insert citation placeholders in the text based on one s references. Then it will create in-text citations and a bibliography based on these citation placeholders, and add it to the paper in the reference style chosen.

STEPS TO GET GOING IN REFWORKS 1. REGISTER IN REFWORKS 2. ENSURE YOUR REFERENCES ARE IN REFWORKS: - Export references from databases - Import references from Google Scholar - Import references from UP s online catalogue: UPexPlore 3. USING WRITE AND CITE: - Download Write-n-Cite book marklet in MSWord - Creating Place Holders in your text - Creating a Bibliography 4. WORKING OFFLINE

PART 1 1. REGISTER IN REFWORKS 2. ENSURE YOUR REFERENCES ARE IN REFWORKS: Directly export references from an online database (ERIC, PsycInfo and Sabinet) into Refworks Directly import references from Google Scholar into RefWorks Import references from UP s online catalogue: UPexPlore

1. SIGN UP FOR A FREE ACCOUNT On our web page, click on Education Databases

Sign up page. After registering, one can immediately begin to use RefWorks

GROUP LOGIN PAGE Please contact your information specialist for the login code

OPTIONAL: CREATING FOLDERS IN REFWORKS: In RefWorks, one can create and organize folders for your references. Click on New Folder, or choose your action from the dropdown menu under View. The default folder for exported references are Last Imported, except if a folder of your choice was specified when adding references

All the references in RefWorks can be searched - select your choice from the dropdown menu under Search

2. ENSURE YOUR REFERENCES ARE IN REFWORKS 2.1 EXPORTING REFERENCES From ERIC (Proquest) or PsycInfo (Proquest), export your saved references directly into RefWorks. Mark your references, then click on the Export button:

Select RefWorks from the dropdown menu and click on it. Make sure RefWorks is displayed in this window below. Then click on Continue

Enter UP s group login code and click on Go to Login

The RefWorks login page will now open - sign in for RefWorks with your login name and password.

References are downloaded directly from ERIC (PROQUEST) into the Last imported Folder, or the folder in RefWorks you specified

From SABINET, export your marked references directly into RefWorks:

In SABINET, click on Export

Enter UP s group login code and click on Go to Login

The RefWorks login page will now open - sign in for RefWorks with your login name and password.

References are downloaded directly from SABINET into the Last imported Folder, or the folder in RefWorks you specified

2.2 IMPORTING REFERENCES DIRECTLY FROM GOOGLE SCHOLAR In Google Scholar, BEFORE SEARCHING, click on the Setting button, and in the resulting dropdown menu on Scholar Settings

1. Click in the box next to: Show links to import citations 2. Click on the arrow next to BibTex for the dropdown menu 3. Click in the dropdown menu on RefWorks 4. Click on the Save button to save these settings for this session only

Now proceed to search Google Scholar. At the bottom of your references in Google Scholar there will be a link: Import into RefWorks. Click on this link to import the reference into RefWorks

Enter UP s group login code and click on Go to Login

The RefWorks login page will now open - sign in for RefWorks with your login name and password.

The reference is downloaded directly from Google Scholar into the Last imported Folder, or the folder in RefWorks you specified

2.3 IMPORTING REFERENCES INTO REFWORKS FROM DATABASES WITHOUT AN EXPORT FUNCTION: 1. If a database doesn t have an Export button for RefWorks, try importing references from within RefWorks, eg. references in UPexPlore (UP s library catalogue) 2. References from certain databases, eg ISI, (Social Sciences Citation Index) can be saved as a Text File in your browser, and then imported into RefWorks. Contact your information specialist for help

On our Education web page, click on Education databases, and then on RefWorks:

Enter UP s group login code and click on Go to Login

The RefWorks login page will now open - sign in for RefWorks with your login name and password.

1. IN REFWORKS, Click on Search 2. In the dropdown menu, click on Online Catalog or Database

Search UPexPlore (the online UP catalogue) through RefWorks:

Mark the references you want, then click on Import

Choose the folder in which you want the references to be imported into. If you haven t created any folders, all references will be downloaded into the Last Imported Folder. Then click again on Import

Click on OK

The references are automatically downloaded into the RefWorks folder you specified, as well as into the Last Imported Folder
