Integrative Trade Global Strategy Aerospace
The Trade Commissioner Service s integrative trade global strategy for the aerospace sector contains three sub sectors (aviation, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and space) and covers both goods and services for these sub sectors. The goal of the strategy is to better align Trade Commissioner Service activities to the interests and capabilities of the Canadian aerospace industry, supporting company efforts to successfully expand internationally. Key objectives outlined in the strategy include the following: Increase content of lower-tier Canadian companies in the global aerospace industry, by promoting links to OEMs and Tier-1s; Increase research and technology development activity with the intent to increase technology demonstrator projects in Canada; Increase Canadian industry representation on future innovative aircraft programs, in line with the AIAC-led Future Major Platforms (FMP) Initiative; Increase global awareness of Canada s foreign investment potential in aerospace. OVERVIEW AVIATION MRO SPACE Facilitate strategic partnerships or investments abroad into key developing markets; Strengthen niche capabilities in new technologies for component inspection, sustainment and repair (e.g., composites, air frame, engine, avionics); Support foreign direct investment, joint ventures and technology alliances with OEMs and major players; Retain and grow the competitive position of MRO in Canada. Support the development of collaborative opportunities between the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Canadian industry and international partners at both government to government level and industry to industry level; Support R&D and S&T collaboration between Canadian and international stakeholders; Increase exposure of Canadian space companies, in particular lower-tier companies, to the global space market; Pursue intelligence and information gathering on market and policy trends as well as on country/regional strategic activity in the sector.
PRIORITY SELECTION Sub sectors of focus and priority markets are selected based on ongoing consultation with industry and stakeholders, including the Department s Aerospace Advisory Board. PRIORITY MARKETS Americas Brazil Mexico United States Europe Belgium Czech Republic European Union France Germany Italy Netherlands Poland Romania Russia Spain UK Ukraine Middle East & Africa Israel UAE Asia and South Pacific Australia China India Japan Malaysia Singapore
TACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS In order to achieve the strategic objectives outlined by the strategy and approved by the Aerospace Advisory Board, the document outlines a number of tactical recommendations directed at Trade Commissioners around the world and throughout Canada as they plan their annual activities. Below are examples of some of the key recommendations made to the DFAIT aerospace network. AVIATION MRO SPACE Target high opportunity OEMs, Tier-1s and -2s for supplier development initiatives at key international events (e.g. Farnborough 2012). Organize incoming missions to showcase Canadian capabilities. Work with potential international partners (R&D organizations and key Tier-1s and- 2s) for technology development and facilitate collaboration with Canadian companies and organizations, particularly in areas of strategic importance to Canada (e.g. the FMP Technology Matrix, NRC Technology List, CSA Strategic Technology List). Target high opportunity Tier-1s and -2s for potential investment(s) into Canada. Facilitate Canadian fact-finding or partnering missions to developing markets. Promote awareness of Canadian capabilities to major players (e.g. Lufthansa Technik, Rolls Royce, P&W, MTU, SAFRAN, ST Aero) to foster development of strategic relationships. In concert with the CSA, encourage major prime contractors with IRB obligations to consider space opportunities and promote Canadian expertise and technology. In collaboration with CSA, conduct studies (e.g. regulatory trends, technical forecasts, impact assessments, country/regional strategic activity in the sector) and disseminate to Canadian space industry stakeholders. Identify potential collaborative R&D opportunities between Canadian and foreign organizations, including crosssector collaboration in relevant fields (e.g. medicine, agricultrue, transport).
