The ABC of the BCA 2010 Bradford solutions to Section J.

Overview Key changes in the BCA 2010 Energy efficiency (Section J) regulations Minimum R-Value ratings for ductwork Insulation options Internal ductlining Minimum R-Value requirements for pipework Recommended minimum insulation thickness for pipework Minimum R-value for cooling water, steam & condensate Minimum thickness for Armaflex and Polystyrene Maximum Design Velocity ductlining Sound absorption Insulation options External ductlining An introduction to DesignSmart

Key changes to BCA 2010 The BCA has introduced higher thermal requirements for HVAC systems. Broadly these are; BCA 2010 now requires Material R - value rather than Total R - Values allowed in previous versions. The BCA 2008/2009 presented its Minimum R - value as Total R - value which allowed for the effects of air films around ductwork. The BCA 2010 now presents its Minimum R - values as Material R - value. Bradford has always promoted its product as Material R - Value ( R mat or R m ) Some other insulation products will need to re-label and promote their products differently.

Key changes to BCA 2010 cont. In air-conditioning systems the BCA 2010 now defines Minimum R Values based on climate zones only - not a matrix of capacity and climate zone BCA 2010 has increased minimum R - values in majority of locations and climate zones. BCA 2010 has added new requirements for pipe insulation including new classifications for refrigerant, condensate and steam. Bradford is now moving to the newer calculation method of pipe Material R - value. This uses the radial method in AS4859.1 and presents higher R values for smaller bore pipe insulation. A new product has been created, the Exetel 100mm product aimed to meeting the need for a one piece material R Value R m 3.0.

Minimum Required R-Value BCA 2010 for Ductwork Evaporative, heating only or refrigerated cooling only, combined heating and refrigerated cooling All have been combined as one group Power capacity grouping have also been removed

Recommended Minimum Insulation Thickness for Polystyrene SL Grade

Insulation Options Internal Duct Lining Bradford Supertel Ductliner nominal 32 kg/m³ Glasswool Supertel is available in a full range of R Values to meet the BCA requirements. It provides the perfect and economical combination of thermal and acoustic insulation to meet all your duct-lining needs. Bradford Exetel Ductliner nominal 36kg/m³ Bradford Exetel has been specially developed to meet the high-end R Values required by the BCA whilst providing improved sound absorption due to higher density and thickness. This product is 100mm thick and will provide an Material R-Value of R3.0 for ductwork located external to the building. Bradford Ultratel Ductliner nominal 48 kg/m³ The extra density of Ultratel enhances the thermal and acoustic performance to provide a premium solution for thermal and acoustic applications. Bradford Rockwool Fibertex Ductliners nominal 60 kg/m³ Rockwool ductliners offer a totally non-combustible (AS1530.1) industrial grade ductliner and when combined with Ultraphon facing is ideal for high temperature applications.

Facing Options Acoustituff A tough lightweight foil vapour barrier that offers excellent economical solution for foil lining of internal duct insulation. Ideal for applications where a fully contained surface finish is required. Acoustituff also eliminates the need to use expensive microfilms with perforated foil. When tested to AS1530.3, achieves a 12.0.1.5 fire rating and passed the UL181 fire test. Ultraphon A superb non-reflective acoustic lining offering superior broad band sound absorption. Ultraphon is strong, durable and also offers good cleanability. Achieves a 0.0.0.3 fire rating when tested to AS1530.3 Widely specified for clean room applications such as hospitals and food preparation areas. Excellent acoustic properties for silencer applications.

Maximum Design Velocity laminar air flow Recommended maximum design velocities for duct linings are determined by testing straight duct with laminar air flows for nil surface erosion at extreme velocities of 36-40 m/s (140 km/hr) and then applying a safety factor of 0.4. Maximum design velocities quoted above are valid for ductliner insulation faced by Bradford Insulation and installed according to AS4254.

Sound Absorption AS1045:1998

Insulation Options External Ductlining Glasswool Multitel nominal 18 kg/m³ Glasswool Multitel is an economical solution in a variety of R-Values to suit the BCA requirements. Glasswool Flexitel nominal 24 kg/m³ Glasswool Flexitel is for a premium finish where ductwork is visible and the added density produces a more resilient ductwrap. Glasswool Specitel R m 1.0 nominal 12 kg/m³ Designed to provide the BCA s mandatory R m 1.0 rating for all flexible ductwork less than 3.0m in length. Its combination of thermal performance and thickness resulting in a more economical solution, with non combustible fire properties when compared to polyester.

An Introduction to Design Smart BCA 2010 Bradford Design Smart will be released shortly Bradford Design Smart has been developed to assist in the selection of the right insulation products for your building Design Smart will guide you through the requirements of the BCA, carry out your Bradford product selection so to equal or better the BCA s thermal requirements; quickly and easily.
