Windows XP Driver Installation - Horizon Technical Brief Overview The Codonics PostScript Driver for Windows XP allows users to print directly from Windows applications to the Codonics Horizon printer. To do that, the driver must first be installed on the host computer system. Two different means of driver installation are provided, so the first step is to determine which is most appropriate: Point and Print. This is the fastest way to get up and running in terms of printing from Windows applications. There are some limitations on the system functionality, so Point and Print is best used in a single-user environment or one in which a single media type is predominately used. Most network configurations will support Point and Print driver installation. LPR. For maximum functionality and flexibility, drivers can be installed using an LPR connection. This would be necessary in cases where the network did not support Point and Print, but would be desirable in any case where Horizon usage will be divided among several users or media types. LPR allows the installation of multiple virtual instances of the same Horizon imager. Preparation The following items will be necessary to complete this installation procedure: 1. Be sure that the IP address of the printer has been properly assigned and set. 2. It is a good idea to have the Windows XP distribution CD available at the time of driver installation. 3. Installation of printers on Windows XP requires Administrator privileges. Contact your system administrator if help is needed. Point and Print Driver Installation Point and Print is a very fast way to set up a single instance of the Horizon imager for Windows printing. If multiple printer instances would be a benefit, or if the network does not support Point and Print, then use LPR Driver Installation described in the next section. 1. On the host Windows XP system, go to the desktop and open My Network Places. 2. Browse through the following path: Entire Network Microsoft Windows Network Workgroup Horizon_X_Y Horizon_X_Y is a computer node on the network. X_Y represents the last two parts of the IP address. For example, if the IP address is 192.168.90.145, the Horizon computer node will be identified on the network as Horizon_90_145. NOTE: If the Horizon does not appear on the network or you cannot browse to it as described above, follow the steps a-d below. Otherwise, proceed to step 3. a. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer. b. If the Address box below the tool bar is not visible, click View -> Toolbar -> Address Bar. c. Type the following into the address box (no quotes): \\horizon_x_y where x_y is the last part of the IP address as described above. d. If a screen like the one below does not appear, then your network does not support Point and Print. Use LPR installation described on Page 2. 3. Open the Horizon computer icon. There will be a Printer icon and several folders displayed as shown below: 4. Doubleclick on the printer icon, or right-click and select Connect. 5. The Horizon will be automatically installed as a Windows printer. 6. To set the default printing properties for the Horizon just installed, click on the Windows Start button then click Settings then Printers. Select the Horizon icon, right click and select Printing Preferences. 7. It is important to set Printing Preferences after driver installation. The default paper size will always be set to Letter after installation. This is not a correct setting for any Horizon media. Change the paper size to one of the custom Horizon types which begin with HZ-. Other default settings such as gamma, contrast etc. can be set at this time also. NOTE: Printing Preferences are saved for each login. If there are multiple users who can log in to Windows, Printing Preferences must be saved for each one.

LPR Driver Installation NOTE: This procedure is the alternative to the Point and Print procedure described on page 1. 1. Start the Windows XP host system. 2. Click Start-Settings-Printers, then doubleclick on the Add Printer icon. 3. This will start the Add Printer Wizard. Click Next to continue to the screen shown below. 4. Be sure to click Local Printer and be sure the Automatically detect... box is unchecked as shown. Click Next to continue to the screen shown below. 6. In the screen shown above, type the IP address of the printer in the top box (not the same as shown above). A unique port name will be automatically created in the lower box. This name can be kept (recommended) or it can be changed to any other name. Click Next to continue. 7. Windows will now try to locate and identify the printer on the network. This may take 20-30 seconds. If there is an error check network connections and IP addresses. If all network connections are correct and Windows locates the printer, the screen below will be displayed. 5. As shown above, click on Create a new port, then select Standard TCP/IP Port. Then click Next to continue to the Add Standard TCP/IP Port Wizard. Click Next to continue to the screen shown below. 8. This screen indicates that Windows located the printer but does not recognize it. This is not a problem. Click on Custom and then click on Settings. The screen below will be displayed.

12. Doubleclick the computer icon, Horizon_X_Y. It will open and display a printer icon and several folders as shown below: 9. As shown above, click the LPR button in the Protocol box. Then, in the LPR Settings box type in 7 (no quotes) for the Queue Name, and check the LPR Byte Counting Enabled box. Click OK. This will return to the previous screen. Click Next and on the following screen click Finish to complete setting up the LPR port. 10. The screen shown below should now be displayed. 13. Open the drivers folder. NOTE: It is possible that the network will not allow browsing to the Drivers folder of the Horizon. In that case, a Codonics driver CD will be needed. Or, drivers can be downloaded from the Codonics website. Contact Codonics Technical Support for help. 14. Open the WinXP folder. The file Cxhrzn11.inf should be found as shown below. 11. In the above screen click Have Disk and then on the following screen click Browse. Browse over the network to the Horizon printer. The path to the printer will include: My Network Places Entire Network Microsoft Windows Network Workgroup Horizon_X_Y 15. Click Open and then click OK. The screen below should be displayed indicating that the Codonics Horizon drivers were found.

Setting Default Properties The default properties for the printer just installed can be set as follows: 1. Click the Start button, then select Settings-Printers to open the Printers folder. 2. Right click on the icon for the Horizon printer. In the dropdown box select Printing Preferences. 16. Click Next. On the next three screens you will be given the option to enter a name for the printer, to share it over a network and to print a test page. Make the appropriate entries and click Next each time. NOTE: Printing a test page is recommended as it will test the LPR connection. However since printing parameters have not yet been set, the print may be less than ideal. 17. On the last screen of the Add Printer Wizard click Finish. Depending on system settings a warning screen may be displayed about the digital signature of the drivers. This can be ignored by clicking Yes. NOTE: It is possible that the system could be set to block unsigned drivers. In that case, change the setting at Start- Settings-Control Panel. Or contact your system administrator. 18. At this point the system may need to copy additional system files for the LPR service. A prompt like the one Note: Another choice in the drop-down box is Rename. This could be used to change the name of the printer. Also, Set as Default can be used to designate this as the Windows default printer. 3. Click on the Layout tab and then click on the Advanced button to access and select default Pagesize, as well as many other settings. These are the properties that will be the starting point whenever this printer is selected. Installing Multiple Instances (LPR connection only) The same Horizon printer can be re-installed multiple times on the host system. This is a big advantage with a multiple media printer like the Horizon, because each instance can be given a different name and can have unique defaults set. For example, the same Horizon printer can be installed as Horizon-color with the default media set to A-size ChromaVista paper, and as Horizon- 14x17 with default media set to 14x17 DirectVista blue film. This can also be used in other ways, for example, a printer can be named Horizon-CT with media, gamma and contrast settings set appropriately and another named Horizon-Ultrasound with its own settings. To install multiple instances of the same Horizon printer, repeat the steps under LPR Driver Installation for each printer to be installed. Note that the driver files only need to be installed once. On subsequent installations select Keep Existing Driver when prompted. After installation of a new printer instance, follow the steps under Setting Default Properties to customize the properties and/or name of each installed printer instance. shown above may be displayed. The exact prompts will depend on settings at the host system. The prompt will generally ask for the Windows XP CD-ROM. 19. When the entire printer installation process has completed successfully, a new printer icon will be added to the Printers folder. Changing the Printer IP address After a printer has been installed on a Windows XP host system as an LPR printer, its IP address can be changed if that becomes necessary. Click Start-Settings-Printers, then right click on the icon for the printer to be changed, select Properties and then click on the Ports tab. The screen should look as shown below:

Note: The Port Name cannot be changed by this procedure. If the Port Name is unacceptable, e.g. if it includes the old IP address, then the only way to change it is to use Delete Port. Then the printer and port will have to be fully installed as described on Page 2. 6. Click on the General tab and make a Windows test print, or close the Properties box altogether and send a test print from a Windows application. Making a Printer a Shared Device If a printer was installed as an unshared device and it is later desired to share it, its status can be changed as follows (only applies to LPR connected printers): 1. Click Start-Settings-Printers, then right click on the icon for the printer to be changed, select Properties and then click on the Sharing tab. The screen should look as shown below. 4. Be sure the port with the Horizon printer is selected then click Configure Port. The Configure Port Screen will look as shown below. 5. On the Configure Port screen change the IP address to the new setting. Be sure that the LPR button is set, the queue name is 7 (no quotes) and the LPR Byte Counting Enabled box is checked. Click OK. 2. Click the Shared as button which will enable the text box. Type the Share name in the box. Do not click on Additional Drivers. Drivers will have to be installed on the client systems that want to share this printer. Click OK. The printer will appear as a shared resource in My Network Places.

Deleting the Printer If the Horizon printer is removed or is no longer needed on the host Windows system, it can be deleted from the Printers Folder as follows. This procedure works regardless of how the printer was installed. 1. Click Start-Settings-Printers to open the printers folder. 2. Click on the Horizon printer icon and then press the Delete key. 3. If more than one instance of the Horizon was installed, delete each in the same manner. Driver Upgrade Generally, once printer drivers are installed they do not need to be upgraded, even if the Horizon software is upgraded. However, there could be a situation where a driver upgrade was desirable, In this case, the drivers can be upgraded as follows: 1. Remove all instances of the Horizon as described in Deleting the Printer above. 2. Reboot the Windows host system. 3. Install new drivers according to either Point and Print Driver Installation (page 1) or LPR Driver Installation (Page 2).
