A brief explanation of SEO: The most commonly used search engine is Google, followed by Bing, Yahoo and a few others. To help us explain SEO, we will use the most commonly used search engine, Google. Every day, millions of people enter "keywords" into Google for various things they are looking for and Google responds by giving the user a number of websites that are relevant to the keywords they have entered in their search. The higher your site ranks in these search results for your keywords, the more likely it is that a potential customer will find and click through to your website. Search engine optimization (SEO) involves raising the visibility of a website in a search engine's (Organic - FREE, not paid for ads) search results, to increase the likelihood of being clicked on by an internet user. In general, the higher the rank of a website in search results, the more visitors it will receive. It s very important to note that it takes significant time for a website to move higher in the ranks and get found online. OFF-PAGE SEO - Search Engine Optimization Even Great Websites with well written content Can Go Unnoticed We would all like to think after going Live with a new website that the seas will part, angels will sing and customers will be lead straight into our hands. Unfortunately, that is just not going to happen. The reality is the only people who know your website exists are you, us and maybe a few of your friends/clients. After a while, a search engine spider will probably come along and pick up your domain for indexing. This will then begin the slow process of jockeying for search-engine position among the hundreds of other websites related to your website and keywords. Rather than rely solely on search engines locating your website it is better to let them ALL know it's there. Once your website is Live you will need to submit the site url - (url is your domain), to a number of search engines and directories. See below for more information on this. This is Off Page SEO. New websites can take up to 6 weeks before Google or other search engines indexes them - (recognises their existence). 1

PREPARATION Write up a short business description in Microsoft Word. You may be able to copy some text from your website for this. To prepare to submit your website and business details to search engines and directories write up a short description about your business in Microsoft Word so you can copy and paste it later. Try and use some of your keywords within the text. Get a copy of your logo (you may need an oblong version and square shaped version of your logo) and a few photos together to upload to search engines (you should compress the photos and name them correctly). I.E. if you have a photo of a kitchen, name it: new-kitchen.jpg. GET STARTED Google Account: If you don t already have one create a Google Account. You can use/create a Gmail or your own email address to open this. Sign up for a Google Business Account using the same login as you created above: You should automatically get a Google + Page as well but just in case check that you have a Google Plus Page as well (load your logo and business details. Google + is basically Facebook by Google. (provides SEO power like no other if you bother to make posts to it). Google Business Account. Google will mail you a postcard for verification. It usually takes around 2 weeks to arrive and will need to be confirmed upon receipt. (This just proves you are at the business listing address). If you don t want your address to display on Google untick serve customers at your location. Search Google for Create a website sitemap create it online and submit to Google: You need to upload the sitemap to your hosting area root folder public_html. Ask your website hosting company to do this for you if you're not sure how. Please note: some may charge a fee. Create a Google Webmaster account. Submit your site map to Google. IMPORTANT Create a Bing Webmaster account. Submit your site map to Bing. This will also cover Yahoo. IMPORTANT 2

Submit your website/business details to these FREE Search Engines / Directories: Yellow Pages provide a Free online listing (as well as paid listings). We would advise you to take the free listing but check that out, obviously this is up to you. It's an important link but be aware; they may try and push advertising on you via a phone call. Search Google for each company one by one. Once on their website locate the area where you can create an account and submit your business details. Some will require you to verify by uploading a file to the hosting server or via email or via text message. You will need to provide a business address for listing, you cannot list without an address. Step 4 - Create Social Media pages for your business - Social Media pages will provide high quality back-links to your website, which strengthen its importance for search engine ranking purposes. Create a Business Facebook Page, not a personal page: Good for search engines that your website is linking to high quality urls. IMPORTANT TO DO THIS! All about building your web presence. Search for: Finda, Norton Safe Web, Zenbu, Gopher, NZ pages, Zip Leaf, Hotfrog, Yelp, Localist, Neighbourly, ibegin, Business Zoom, Fyple, Local BD, New Zealand Websites, New Zealand Small Business Directory, Brownbook and any others you know of. There are hundreds more but this will give you a good start. Also try and get listed on other websites in your industry. Continue this as and when, never ending. IMPORTANT! We don t mean a personal Facebook page, we're talking about a business page/club page/fan page. Look at the bottom of the Facebook signup page for where you click to create this. We would advise you to post any specials or promotions you may have, holiday trading hours, latest news etc. You will need to monitor the email address you set it up with in case you get a question from a customer. When you have created your Facebook page you can request a Facebook username. www.facebook.com/yourcompanyname 3

Facebook Page / User Name: You can add this to your website, email signatures, business cards etc. You should also email all your friends and family and ask them to like/share your page. Also ask them to bookmark your website. Connecting your site to social media provides strong back-links that Google loves for ranking sites higher and it's a great way to spread communications about your business. Look to grow your Likes with a monthly or 3 monthly prize draw for all new Likes. Maybe create a small flyer to hand out. Just select which Social Media platforms will work best for you! Other examples of Social Media Pages Include YouTube: Business videos, client interaction or promotional material - upload anything you want, you must sign up for a Google Account first before creating your YouTube profile. LinkedIn: The business professionals calling card. Other examples include Pinterest, Instagram and Reddit. Please note, when you make updates to your social media, make sure you include a link-back (www.yourdomainname.co.nz) to your website in order to gain the long-term benefit for ranking purposes. Other OPTIONS AND examples of Social Media Pages Include: Google Adwords or Facebook Ads (set your own budget). This method can get you on the first page of Google instantly. your Facebook page. Google Plus: Basically Facebook by Google, with SEO power like no other. Access via Google and make sure you copy and paste whatever info you post to More Options: Twitter: Start tweeting your business news, promotions, offers and whatever else will be of interest to your clients - set up via Twitter Warning: We do not normally recommend Google Adwords for most of our start-up clients, given the complications in keyword choice, competition and overall cost vs. return for the nature of their business. We are not saying don t use this advertising medium, just that you need to do your research first because it may get very expensive with little return if not done right. Best left to a Google Adwords specialist. 4

Three important facts about Google Adwords: Adwords are best used with skill and care each Adword campaign needs you to carefully choose the search terms. As such, it may take several attempts at fine tuning the search terms to get people (and/or the right people you are targeting) to click on your advert. Placing Adwords is not cheap, although you can control the budget with daily limits (i.e. $10, $20, $50, $100 etc). With Pay per Click advertising selecting what countries, regions, devices (mobile, desktop) and time of day to display your advert is also very important. Our tip is to not let Google set this up for you as they have a very different goal to you. If you have some knowledge of Google Adwords you can complete this task yourself or you can employ a Google Adwords specialist to set-up and manage this for you. Each advert click directs the user to your website, so an attractive and up to date website and landing page is essential. Doing as much of the above as you can, is essential and helps massively with being found within search engines. This is doing the little things that will help your website be found online in front of your competition. Remember, it takes time for this stuff to fully take effect, many weeks usually. Also consider other advertising to draw people to your website, products or services, especially whilst your website is building its presence.
