Gaston County GIS Interactive Mapping Website
The Gaston County GIS mapping website optimizes the available window viewing area and has interactive tools, collapsible menus and movable windows. This map contains the following layers: Building Footprints, Cemeteries, Elevation Hill Shade, Facility Buildings, Gaston County, Boundary, Highways, Interstate, Major Roads, Municipalities, Parcels, Parks, Ponds, Rivers, Water Bodies, Railroad, Right of Way, Streets, Surrounding Counties. Use the above image for the following reference information. Each section s number corresponds to its location in the image above: 1. The search tools allow for a complete or partial entry. If a single match is found the map will zoom directly to the location; for multiple results a drop down list will be created. To zoom to one of the results on the map, click an item in the list. The list will remain visible until you clear, close or perform another search. You may return to the list and select another result. Only one result may be selected at a time. a. Search by the six (6) digit Gaston County Parcel ID (PID) i. example: 212716 b. Search by the Current Owners Name i. Gaston County stores owner s names in the following format: Last Name First Name Middle Initial/Name or Company Name ii. example: Gaston County or Smith John
c. Search by Parcel Address i. This input searches the single physical address listed with the tax record. Please refer to the list below for street type and directional abbreviations. ii. example: 128 W Main Ave d. Search by Street Name i. This input searches street centerlines. Please refer to the list below for street type and directional abbreviations. e. Search by Street Intersection i. An intersection can be queried by using at, and, or. A basemap ( ) is a map depicting background reference information such as landforms, roads, landmarks, and political boundaries, onto which other thematic information can be placed. The map you see when the application first loads is called the basemap. There are two
(2) basemaps to choose from. A simple parcel and roads grayscale map (Basic) and a more complex map based off of ESRI s World Topographic Map Template & Local Government General Purpose Basemap (Full). Map layers in the basemap cannot be turned on/off. To change the basemap, click to toggle between both options. 3. The Navigation tool menu consists of nine different tool selections. Starting from the top and going down these tool options are: a. Pan ( ) i. This tool shifts the map image without changing the view scale. Click the Pan tool, then click and hold the mouse button, while dragging mouse in the desired direction. b. Full Extent ( ) i. This toll returns the map to the original county boundary extent. c. Clear Map ( ) i. This tool clears the map of graphics and selections. d. Zoom In ( ) i. This tool creates a closer view scale on the map by drawing a box with the mouse. e. Zoom Out( ) i. This tool creates a further away view scale on the map by drawing a box with the mouse. f. Next Extent ( ) i. This tool allows you to return forward viewed locations on the map. g. Previous Extent ( ) i. This tool returns to the previous location on the map. h. Identify ( ) i. This tool allows you to display information related to one of three available sections including parcels, address points and communication towers. ii. Hovering with any item selected from the drop down menu that appears when activating this tool will open a small preview window with information related to that selection if results are found. iii. If the option for parcels is selected, additionally by clicking on the map, a property details window will open displaying additional tax, election and public safety information related to that parcel identified.
i. None ( ) i. This tool turns off any currently active navigation tool and allows you to work with the map and other advanced tools without affect the map location or having pop-ups interfere. 4. The Advanced Tools ( ) menu consists of seven different tool selections. Starting from the top and going down these tool options are: a. Toggle Banner ( ) i. This tool will toggle banner on and off. The banner must be visible to be able to use the search tools and switch basemaps. b. Optional Map Layers ( ) i. This opens a window that displays the additional map layers that can be viewed. The layers are sorted into groups. To view the layer: expand the list, click in the checkbox next to the layer name and click the Refresh Selected Layers button at the bottom of the list. ii. A layer s visibility may be scale dependent. If you see this icon ( ), then you will need to zoom in or out to the appropriate view scale to see that layer. iii. To change a layers transparency, click the ( ) icon next to the layer. This opens a window where you can adjust the layer transparency from 0% (completely transparent) to 100% (completely opaque). Transparency adjustments do not show on map printouts. iv. The Imagery Overlay group of layers has a toggle all option that will let you toggle all layers simultaneously. c. Advanced Map Tools ( ) i. This tool consist of seven sub-tools: They are: 1. The Buffering Tool ( ) a. This tool allows you to create a buffer around an identified parcel. This tool also allows you to identify all parcels that fall within a buffered area. 2. Directions Tool ( ) a. This tool allows you obtain Google Map directions to and from a start and end location. 3. Drawing and Text Tool ( ) a. This tool allows you to draw on the map and add custom text.
4. Layer Swipe Tool ( ) a. This tool allows you to overlay layers and swipe them, showing differences and similarities. 5. Map Legend ( ) a. This tools show legend information for any currently displayed map layers. 6. Measure ( ) a. This tool allows you to measure features on the map in length, area and location. 7. Overview ( ) a. This tool provides an overview look of your current map extent within the County. d. Printing ( ) i. This tool provides access to printable maps. You can print maps to one of three types: PDF, PNG, or Complete page. Only complete page printouts have the option to specify a document name and comments. You can also select a print size and orientation. Only contents that fit within the shaded red outline will be printed. For printing on 8 ½ inch by 11 inch paper with ½ inch margins, please use standard definition when print so that items will scale correctly. e. Parcel Data Search ( ) i. This tool opens a new window and directs you to the parcel data search application where you perform extensive tax data searches without a map. f. Help ( ) i. This tool provides access to a subset of help tools. These tools are: 1. YouTube Instruction Videos ( ) a. Provides access to video tutorials on how to use the Gaston GIS web applications. 2. F.A.Q. GIS Mobile ( ) i. This will direct you to the mobile version of the GIS website to perform simple searches from a smartphone or tablet. 5. The scale bar ( ) displays the linear scale of the map in both metric and US measurements. The zoom controls ( ) allow zooming in and out at preset incremental scales. The compass rose ( ) or North arrow displays the maps orientation or the cardinal direction north. This may be repositioned on the map by clicking and holding then dragging with the mouse.
