What is a Wiki? American Heritage dictionary defines a wiki as a "collaborative website whose content can be edited by anyone who has access to it." The name comes from the Hawaiian word wiki-wiki which means "quick." Wikis can incorporate text, image, sound and video files Encourages collaboration Wikispaces Wikispaces is a private label wiki from Instructional Technology Available for CMS teachers to have access to school, department or district wikis that can be easily managed and monitored. Purpose of the Wiki Post questions and answers in real-time in the discussion forum Develop of a list of resources, such as websites or documents, which all can add to and access Share appropriate photos and/or videos that relate to our program Post and read announcements 2
Access the ESL Wiki ESL Professional Learning Network (For ESL Teachers) 1. Go to: http://esl.cmswiki.wikispaces.net 2. Enter username and password EXAMPLE: fred.sanford@cms.k12.nc.us Username: fred_sanford Password: eslwiki 3. Click Sign In 4. Before using the wiki for the first time, click on Wiki Use Policy. 5. Please read the wiki use policy carefully and sign the agreement at the bottom of the page. 3
Be Notified of Changes 1. On any page, click on the Notify Me tab. 2. If you need to confirm your e-mail address FIRST, complete steps 2 and 3. 3. Click resend confirmation e-mail. Check your e-mail and click on the link in the cmswiki message. 4. Check Page Edits and Discussions. Then click Update. 4
Edit the Shared Resources Page: Add Hyperlinks 1. Click on Shared Resources. 2. Click Edit 3. The editing toolbar will appear. Click on the Link icon. 4. 5. Select the External Link tab. 6. For training purposes, type the name of your favorite educational website in the Link Text box. 7. Type or paste the URL into the Address field. 8. Click the Add Link button. 9. Save the wiki page. 5
Upload a Document 1. Select Manage Wiki. 2. Under Content, select Files. 3. Click Browse. 4. Select the file you would like to upload. Click Open. 5. Click Upload File 6
Edit a Previously Uploaded Document If you make changes to a file and need the newer version placed on a page, follow these steps: 1. Be sure that the file on your computer has the same exact name as the one previously uploaded on the wiki. 2. Repeat the steps for Uploading a Document. 3. The newer version of the file will replace the older version. 7
Put Files on a Page 1. For Training Purposes, click on Training Sessions on the ESL wiki 2. Click on Training Page # 3. Click the Edit button. 4. Place the cursor where you would like the link to your file to appear. 5. Select the File icon from the editor toolbar. 6. Page through your files, search by file name, or sort by tag (Continued on pg. 9) 8
Put Files on a Page 7. If you haven't already uploaded the file to your wiki, use the button to Upload Files. 8. Click on the file to place it on the page. Images, videos, and audio clips can be embedded directly into the page. For other file types including PDFs, Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations the Embed File option will place a link to the file on the page. 9. Click Save. 9
Create Your Profile Page 1. Minimize your web browser 2. Open Microsoft Word 3. Type profile information in Microsoft Word Answer the following questions in your profile: How many years of teaching experience do you have? How many years have you been teaching ESL? What school(s) do you teach at and/or have you taught at? Personal information (optional): Family, pets, hobbies, etc. 4. Save 5. Highlight + Copy Text 6. Maximize web browser 7. Click on My Account 8. Click on Create a profile page now 9. Paste the copied text into the text box and Save. 10
Reply to a Discussion 1. Click on the Discussion Tab on any page. (For training purposes, click on Training Sessions Discussion Tab. Click on the Two Truths and a Lie Post) 2. To respond to a discussion question, leave the subject as is and enter your text in the reply box. 3. Click Post. 11
