A SHORT HISTORY OF THE TULSA JUDO CLUB The Tulsa Judo Club was founded in the Summer of 1980 by John Ross & Martin Bregman. John Ross arrived in Tulsa at the end of June & got a number of local Judoka together at the Thornton Family YMCA, including Ron Benner & Jack Hicks, as well as a few juniors including John s son Jon, Rick Killion, Mark Crewson & Aaron Miller. Martin Bregman arrived at the end of July from Ohio, where he left the Ohio Wesleyan University/ Delaware Judo Club and 99 players in the hands of Doug Fortune, who later became the head coach at Cumberland College. John Ross left the club in October with the Senior Judoka to try & start another club at the Downtown YMCA in Tulsa, leaving Martin Bregman to run the Juniors of the Tulsa Judo Club. Shortly thereafter John returned to China, where he had spent a great deal of his life, & the Seniors returned to the Thornton Family YMCA. John Ross would return several times in the next few years, but in 1985 moved to Los Angeles, CA with Jan Trussell who was his star pupil at the time to become head coach of the Los Angeles Judo Club. In 1985 the Tulsa Judo Club had expanded to include 87 members and was at that time the 5 th largest Judo Club in the United States registered with United States Judo, the national governing body of Judo. The Tulsa Judo Club remained at the Thornton Family YMCA until 1990. In 1990 the club moved to the Tulsa Jewish Community Center & was there until the beginning of 2001. Martin Bregman remained as head coach from 1980 till the Summer of 1994. In 1994 Dr. Bregman was transferred by his employer (Amerada Hess Corp.) to Houston, TX. Jack Hicks the Assistant Head Coach took over as head coach with Martin s promise to return upon early retirement. During his stay in Houston Martin was able to train with his own coach, Karl Geis, once again, & assisted several other clubs. Late in the Fall of 2000, Dr. Bregman returned to reassume the duties of Head Coach. In January, 2001 the Club was moved to Champions Athletic Complex in South Tulsa. The Tulsa Judo Club remained at Champions until March of 2007, at which time the Athletic Complex was sold. The club was moved into a storage complex for one year & three months & then finally moved to its current location in June of 2008. The Tulsa Judo Club has produced the following National & International Referees: IJF-A: Martin Bregman; Meredith Bregman; PJU-C: Richard A. Redner, Tom Sowell; National Referee: Ron Benner, George Pierson, Dona Schafer; Chris VanLandingham.
